Yes. Games whose dedicated server only ships as a Windows program, such as ARK: Survival Ascended, Enshrouded, V Rising, Conan Exiles, Sons of the Forest and Space Engineers, run on Linux through a compatibility layer called Wine, or Valve's Proton, which is built on Wine. It works well for most games and is how most game hosts run them, but it adds a few quirks: slower first starts, occasional breakage after a game update, and some Windows only mod tools that need extra care. If you are choosing a host, ask whether they run your game this way and how they handle updates.

Why some servers are Windows only

Developers ship the dedicated server for the platforms they test. Some build for both Windows and Linux, many build for Windows only, especially Unreal Engine games where the Linux server build takes extra work.

Native Linux servers include:

Windows only servers that hosts commonly run on Linux include:

What Wine and Proton do

Wine is a compatibility layer that lets Linux run Windows programs. It is not an emulator: the server's code runs directly on the CPU, and Wine translates the Windows system calls (files, network, threads) into Linux ones.

Proton is Valve's version of Wine, built for running Windows games on Steam Deck and Linux. Some hosts use Proton for servers like ARK: Survival Ascended because it tends to keep up with the newest Unreal Engine needs.

Because nothing is emulated, a Windows server on Wine usually performs close to how it would on Windows. Dedicated servers do not draw graphics, which removes the hardest part of Wine's job.

What can go wrong

Slower first start

The first start creates a Wine prefix, a folder that acts like a Windows installation, and may install runtime libraries such as the Visual C++ redistributables. That can add minutes to the very first launch. Later starts are normal.

Breakage after a game update

Occasionally a game update uses a Windows feature that Wine does not handle yet, and the server crashes on start until Wine or the host's setup catches up. Signs in the console:

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access
err:module:import_dll Library VCRUNTIME140_1.dll not found

The second one means a runtime library is missing from the prefix. A good host fixes these in their setup for everyone.

Windows only admin tools

Some server tools are themselves Windows programs: mod managers, RCON tools that run on the server, or .bat scripts. Those either need Wine too or a Linux alternative. Most admin work happens through in game commands, RCON from your own PC, and editing config files, which all work the same.

Paths look different

Inside a Wine prefix, the Windows path C:\users\steamuser\AppData\Local\ lives under a folder like .wine/drive_c/users/. Some games save worlds in AppData instead of the server folder, so on a Linux host the save may be somewhere unexpected. A host's file manager should point you at the right folder.

Mods with native Windows code

BepInEx for V Rising runs through Wine with a small configuration change (it needs the winhttp DLL override). Most hosts that run V Rising set that up. Mods that are only content, scripts or Workshop items behave the same as on Windows.

Running it yourself on Linux

If you want to host a Windows only server on your own Linux machine or VPS:

  1. Install Wine (or Proton through a Steam client or a tool that downloads it).
  2. Download the server with SteamCMD using +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows so you get the Windows build.
  3. Run the server with wine YourServer.exe plus its normal launch options.
  4. Add xvfb-run if the server insists on a display, which a few do.
  5. Watch the first start closely for missing DLL errors.

Expect to spend time on the first setup. That is a big part of why people rent instead. If you are deciding between a VPS and a game host, see game server hosting vs VPS.

Running it on Windows instead

If you host at home on a Windows PC, none of this applies: run the server directly. The trade offs of home hosting are in is renting a game server worth it.

Questions to ask a host

  • Do you run this game's Windows server under Wine or Proton?
  • How quickly do you fix it when a game update breaks it?
  • Where are the save files in the file manager?
  • Do Windows based mods like BepInEx work?

On GamezServers

We run every game's official dedicated server, using Wine or Proton for the ones that only ship for Windows. That part is already handled: the server installs, updates and starts like any other, every setting from the game's server template is in the control panel, and your saves are in the file manager. If an update ever trips a server up, email support@gamezservers.com. Our ARK: Survival Ascended servers, for example, run the Windows server through Proton and update on every restart. FAQ

Is a Windows game server slower on Linux?

Usually not by much. The code runs natively through Wine, and servers do not draw graphics. The first start is slower while Wine sets up its prefix.

Can I run an ARK: Survival Ascended server on Linux?

Yes, through Proton or Wine. There is no official Linux build, but this is how most Linux hosts run it.

Why does my server need Visual C++ files on Linux?

The Windows server program expects the Microsoft runtime libraries. Under Wine they are installed into the prefix the same way as on Windows.

Do Windows mods work on a Linux server?

Content and Workshop mods work the same. Mod loaders that inject DLLs, like BepInEx, need a Wine setting called a DLL override, which most hosts configure.
