What comes set up on a Quake Live server

Every Quake Live mode

Duel, FFA, TDM, clan arena, CTF, freeze tag, race and more, picked with g_factory and a map pool you control.

Workshop maps

List Workshop item IDs in workshop.txt and the server downloads them at start, so custom maps can join your map pool.

Admins and bans that stick

access.txt holds your admins, moderators and bans by Steam ID, and survives every restart and map change.

Private practice server

Set a password and server name in the panel for a scrim or duel practice box that only your group can enter.

How to join your Quake Live server

  1. 1

Launch Quake Live on Steam and press the tilde key to open the console.

  2. 2

If the server has a password, type \password yourpassword and press Enter.

  3. 3

Type \connect 203.0.113.24 and press Enter.

  4. 4

Or find the server by name in the in-game server browser and join from there.

Common problems

Auto Update is off by default. Turn it on so the server pulls Quake Live patches on restart, or clients on a newer build may fail to connect.

The server does not load a config file on its own. Upload server.cfg with your g_factory, map and limits, then run exec server.cfg in the live console after each start.

Workshop maps only load if their item IDs are in workshop.txt before the server starts. Add the ID, restart, then add the map to mappool.txt.

Edit access.txt only while the server is stopped. The game writes its own copy on every map load and will overwrite live edits.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Quake Live server hosting, explained

Quake Live is id Software's online version of Quake III Arena, sold on Steam with the full competitive lineup: duel, free for all, team deathmatch, clan arena, capture the flag, freeze tag, race and more. Matches are fast and unforgiving, and the community that is left is skilled and loyal. Servers are usually small, often 16 slots or fewer, built around one mode and a well chosen map pool.

With a smaller player base, a well run server is worth a lot. Your own gives you a fixed place for duel practice, pickup games, clan scrims or a cup, with the map pool, rules and admins you want. Players coming back to Quake after years away usually want a server where they know the regulars, and a dedicated box with a stable address gives a group that.

Our panel sets the server name, password, server type, server frame rate and auto update. Everything else is standard Quake Live: server.cfg for g_factory, frag and time limits and sv_maxclients, mappool.txt for the rotation, access.txt for admins and bans, and workshop.txt for Workshop content. All of them are editable in the file manager, and the live console takes any command while the server runs.

Quake Live is built on idTech3, so a server uses very little memory. 1 GB covers a duel or practice server, 2 GB a full 16 slot clan arena or CTF server with Workshop maps, and 4 GB is plenty even for a big map pool. For Quake, ping and a steady server frame rate decide how a match feels. Sleep when empty can stop a quiet server after 4 days.

Common questions

How many players can a Quake Live server hold?

Set sv_maxClients in server.cfg. 16 is common, most modes are designed for 16 or fewer, and duel only needs 2 plus spectators.

How do I change the game mode?

Set g_factory in server.cfg, for example duel, ca, ctf, ft or ffa, and pick maps for it in mappool.txt. Then restart or change map.

How do I add Workshop maps?

Add each Workshop item ID to workshop.txt and restart. The server downloads them, and players get the content when they connect.

How do I make myself admin?

Stop the server, add your Steam ID with the admin level to access.txt, and start it again. The file uses SteamID|admin per line.

Do players need to own Quake Live?

Yes, each player needs Quake Live on Steam. The server is a separate free dedicated server download that we install for you.

What does the FPS setting do?

It sets sv_fps, how many frames the server simulates per second. The default of 40 is standard, and higher values cost more CPU and bandwidth.

Can I run minqlx plugins?

minqlx needs a different launch script than the standard server our setup runs, so it is not available out of the box.

Why can players not connect after a patch?

The server is probably on an older build. Turn on Auto Update in the panel and restart so it matches the clients.

Is GamezServers affiliated with Quake Live?

No. You rent and control your own dedicated Quake Live server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
