Why plugin admins run Oxide with us
Force wipe day without the scramble
Facepunch updates Rust on the first Thursday of every month, and that update replaces the files Oxide hooks into. On a self hosted box that means downloading the new Oxide build, extracting it over the server and hoping nothing else broke.
Here, every restart updates Rust and Oxide to their newest releases. Press Restart after the update and the server comes back on the current version. On force wipe day Oxide can lag Rust by a few hours, so if a plugin will not load straight away, give the framework time to catch up and restart again.
The whole uMod library, one upload away
Oxide is the long running standard with the largest plugin library at umod.org, and almost every plugin page and guide assumes it. Download the .cs file, upload it to oxide/plugins in the Files tab, and watch the console report it loaded. Big batches go faster over SFTP.
A proven 2x community pack is Furnace Splitter, Remover Tool, Auto Doors, Admin Radar, Gather Manager, Stack Size Controller, Better Chat and Death Notes. Add NTeleportation, Rust Kits, Backpacks, Clans and Image Library for a 5x or 10x build. Paid plugins from Codefling install the same way.
Configs and permissions from the browser
After its first load, each plugin writes a JSON file to oxide/config. Edit it in the file manager, save, and press Reload Oxide plugins instead of restarting the whole server.
Permissions run from the live console in your browser: oxide.grant group default nteleportation.home gives every player homes, and oxide.usergroup add puts a trusted player in the admin group. Rust's own admin still comes from ownerid followed by a SteamID64, then server.writecfg so it survives restarts.
Memory for plugins and a full wipe
RAM is what runs out first in Rust. It climbs as bases grow through a wipe, and every plugin adds a little more. The Standard plan gives you 12 GB for up to 100 players on a 4000 size map with a sensible plugin list, at 29.99 USD a month. Heavy packs, custom maps or a 200 player monthly belong on Pro with 16 GB, and you can move between plans from the dashboard whenever your population changes.
Servers running Oxide are listed in the Modded tab of the server browser, which is exactly where plugin players look for them.

What comes set up on a Rust server
Oxide preinstalled
Choose the Oxide server type and the framework is in place when the server comes online.
Updates on restart
Rust and Oxide update themselves every time the server restarts, including force wipe day.
Plugins load live
Drop a .cs file in oxide/plugins and it compiles and loads without a restart.
Console and SFTP
Run oxide.grant from the browser console and upload big plugin batches over SFTP.
Backups before updates
Your map and plugin data are backed up before game updates and server type switches.
DDoS protection
Every plan is covered by DDoS protection, which matters on a busy wipe day.

How to join your Rust server
- 1
Launch Rust and wait for the main menu to load.
- 2
Press F1 to open the console.
- 3
Type client.connect

Once your server shows up in the Community or Modded tab, you and your friends can also find it by name and add it to Favorites.
Common problems
Not in the server list yet
New servers can take a while to show up in the Community tab. Pasting the connect command into the F1 console always works.
Cannot connect after a Rust update
Rust updates on the first Thursday of every month. The owner restarts the server so it updates too, then everyone can join again.
Server still starting
A fresh map takes a few minutes to generate the first time after a wipe or a new seed. Wait until the dashboard shows it running.
Making someone an admin
The owner types ownerid followed by the player's Steam ID in the dashboard console, then server.writecfg so it survives restarts, and the player reconnects.
Server not responding
Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.
Use the server address
Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.
No port forwarding or firewall changes
Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.
Common questions
Do players need to download Oxide plugins?
No. Rust plugins run only on the server, so players connect with a normal copy of Rust and see the results, like new chat commands or UI.
Do I have to reinstall Oxide after every Rust update?
No. Every restart updates Rust and Oxide to the newest release. On force wipe day Oxide can trail Rust by a few hours, so plugins may wait for it to catch up.
Do I need to restart after adding a plugin?
No. Plugins compile and load as soon as the file lands in oxide/plugins. After editing a config in oxide/config, press Reload Oxide plugins.
Why did my server move to the Modded tab?
Rust lists every server running a plugin framework under Modded. Players can still find it by name and add it to Favorites.
Can I switch from Oxide to Carbon later?
Yes. Change the server type in the panel and your server is backed up first. Carbon runs most Oxide plugins. Never run both frameworks at once.
Which plan suits a modded Rust server?
Standard with 12 GB fits a 4000 map with light plugins and up to 100 players. Pick Pro with 16 GB for heavy plugin packs, big or custom maps and up to 200 players.
How much RAM does Rust need?
Standard maps with up to 100 players run well on 12 GB. Go bigger for large maps or heavy plugins.
How do I wipe my server?
Stop the server, open Files, go to server/rust and delete the .map and .sav files for a map wipe. Delete the player.blueprints files too for a blueprint wipe. Start the server and a fresh map generates.
Do I have to wipe every month?
The map has to wipe when Facepunch releases the monthly update on the first Thursday of the month, because old maps do not load on the new version. Restart after the update and the new map generates by itself. Blueprint wipes are up to you.
Can my friends and I split the cost?
Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.
Can I build a custom plan?
Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.
Can I pay once instead of a subscription?
Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.
How fast is setup, really?
Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
