Why bigger servers pick Carbon

Your Oxide plugins still work

Carbon is built to load Oxide plugins, so the uMod library you already know carries over. Download the .cs file, drop it in carbon/plugins with the file manager or SFTP, and it compiles and loads without a restart.

The commands are familiar too, with c. in place of oxide.: c.grant group default nteleportation.home, c.plugins to list what is running, and c.reload * after you edit configs. A few plugins that patch deep into Oxide internals can misbehave, so test anything unusual before a wipe.

Built in modules mean fewer plugins

Every plugin hooks into game events, and a long list adds up on a busy server. Carbon ships modules that cover common jobs out of the box: Vanish for admins, plus Gather Manager and Stack Manager modules for modded rates.

That lets a 2x or 5x server drop three popular plugins entirely and keep the plugin list for things only plugins can do, like Raidable Bases, Clans or a Discord relay.

Moving over from Oxide

Already running Oxide with us? Change the server type to Carbon in the panel. Your server is backed up before the switch, so you can always go back. Copy your plugin files into carbon/plugins and their JSON configs into carbon/configs, then press Reload Carbon plugins.

Never run both frameworks on one server. Pick one, and if you ever want to return, switch the type back the same way.

Sized for full pop and big maps

Plugin heavy servers use more memory, and Rust RAM climbs through every wipe as bases grow. Pro gives you 16 GB and up to 200 players for 39.99 USD a month, which is where large maps, custom maps and heavy plugin packs belong. A lighter Carbon server on a 4000 map fits Standard with 12 GB and 100 players.

Every restart updates Rust and Carbon together, so force wipe day is a restart from the panel. Carbon can trail a Rust update by a few hours, and plugins load once it catches up.

How to join your Rust server

  1. 1

Launch Rust and wait for the main menu to load.

  2. 2

Press F1 to open the console.

  3. 3

Type client.connect 203.0.113.24:28015 and press Enter.

  4. 4

Once your server shows up in the Community or Modded tab, you and your friends can also find it by name and add it to Favorites.

Common problems

Not in the server list yet

New servers can take a while to show up in the Community tab. Pasting the connect command into the F1 console always works.

Cannot connect after a Rust update

Rust updates on the first Thursday of every month. The owner restarts the server so it updates too, then everyone can join again.

Server still starting

A fresh map takes a few minutes to generate the first time after a wipe or a new seed. Wait until the dashboard shows it running.

Making someone an admin

The owner types ownerid followed by the player's Steam ID in the dashboard console, then server.writecfg so it survives restarts, and the player reconnects.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Common questions

Does Carbon run Oxide plugins?

Most of them. Carbon is built to load Oxide plugins, so almost everything on uMod runs. A few plugins that patch deep into Oxide internals can misbehave, so test before a wipe.

Where do Carbon plugins and configs go?

Plugins go in carbon/plugins and their settings appear in carbon/configs after the first load. Edit a config, save it, and press Reload Carbon plugins.

Can I switch an Oxide server to Carbon?

Yes. Change the server type in the panel. The server is backed up before the switch, then copy your plugins into carbon/plugins.

Does Carbon update itself?

Yes. Every restart updates Rust and Carbon to the newest release. On force wipe day Carbon can lag Rust by a few hours before plugins load.

Do players need anything installed?

No. Carbon and its plugins run only on the server. Players join with a normal copy of Rust, and the server shows in the Modded tab.

How do I give plugin permissions on Carbon?

Use the same commands as Oxide with c. in front, for example c.grant group default kits.use, from the panel console.

How much RAM does Rust need?

Standard maps with up to 100 players run well on 12 GB. Go bigger for large maps or heavy plugins.

How do I wipe my server?

Stop the server, open Files, go to server/rust and delete the .map and .sav files for a map wipe. Delete the player.blueprints files too for a blueprint wipe. Start the server and a fresh map generates.

Do I have to wipe every month?

The map has to wipe when Facepunch releases the monthly update on the first Thursday of the month, because old maps do not load on the new version. Restart after the update and the new map generates by itself. Blueprint wipes are up to you.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
