A 7 Days to Die dedicated server needs about 8 GB of RAM for up to 8 players on Navezgane or a small random world, 12 GB for light mods or 8 to 16 players, and 16 GB for overhaul mods, 10K random worlds or 16 players and up. It also wants a CPU with fast single core speed, since blood moon hordes are CPU bound, and 15 to 25 GB of SSD space.
How much RAM does a 7 Days to Die server need?
| Server | RAM |
|---|---|
| Vanilla, up to 8 players on Navezgane or a random world | 8 GB |
| Light mods, or 8 to 16 players | 12 GB |
| Overhaul mods like Darkness Falls, big random worlds, or 16+ players | 16 GB |
These numbers are for the V3 line. As of October 2026 the stable branch is V3.2, released on 26 August 2026 (Steam announcement). Memory use depends on four things: world size, how far players spread out, how many zombies are loaded and which mods are installed.
Check live memory any time with the mem console command. If it creeps toward the limit through a session, you need more RAM or a smaller world.
Does world size change 7 Days to Die server requirements?
Yes, more than anything else. You choose between the handmade Navezgane map and a random generated world (GameWorld set to RWG), which comes in fixed sizes:
| World | WorldGenSize |
Suits | Starting RAM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navezgane | Fixed | First playthroughs, any group | 8 GB |
| Small RWG | 4096 | Very small groups | 8 GB |
| Standard RWG | 6144 | Most friend groups | 8 GB |
| Large RWG | 8192 | 8 or more players | 12 GB |
| Huge RWG | 10240 | Big or long running servers | 16 GB |
Bigger worlds cost in three ways. Generation on first start takes longer, often 10 minutes or more on the big sizes, and can run the server out of memory if it is undersized. The world takes more disk space. And players spread out further, which means more of the map is loaded at once. For a group under 8, 6144 is plenty. Changing the seed or size means a new world, so decide before you start.
What CPU does a 7 Days to Die server need?
7 Days to Die leans on single core speed more than core count. The game simulates zombies, physics and block damage, and on blood moon night all of that peaks together. Four fast cores is a sensible minimum.
Signs the CPU is the limit, not RAM:
- Zombies freeze, teleport or attack through walls on blood moon nights.
- Lag gets worse when players are in different places, even with memory to spare.
- Structural collapses take seconds to resolve.
Settings in serverconfig.xml that lower CPU load:
<property name="MaxSpawnedZombies" value="64"/>
<property name="ServerMaxAllowedViewDistance" value="8"/>
<property name="DynamicMeshEnabled" value="false"/>
MaxSpawnedZombies defaults to 64, and raising it on a busy server hurts. Lowering view distance from 12 to 8 cuts how much each player loads. Since V3, blood moon enemy counts and other gameplay rules live in your SandboxCode, so keep horde sizes sensible there too. More in our 7 Days to Die server lag fix.

How much disk space does a 7 Days to Die server need?
Plan for 15 to 25 GB on an SSD. The game files take most of it, while generated worlds, saves and mods add the rest. Overhaul mods are large on their own, and each random world you generate stays on disk until you delete it.
An SSD matters because the server streams chunks from disk as players move, and saves the world regularly. On a hard drive, fast vehicles outrun chunk loading and players see holes in the world.
Do mods increase the requirements?
Small XML modlets (loot, recipe or zombie tweaks) barely change anything, and the server sends them to players automatically. Overhaul mods like Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy or Rebirth are a different story: new items, zombies, POIs and code all add memory and CPU, which is why they sit in the 16 GB row. Overhauls also need Easy Anti-Cheat turned off and often an older game branch, since many are not updated for V3 yet. See how to install mods on a 7 Days to Die server.
What ports and bandwidth does a 7 Days to Die server need?
| Port | Protocol | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 26900 | TCP and UDP | Game and Steam query |
| 26901 to 26902 | UDP | Game traffic |
On a home server, forward these on your router. Upload speed is the limit for home hosting: every player needs steady world and zombie updates, and blood moon nights send the most.
How many players can a 7 Days to Die server handle?
ServerMaxPlayerCount defaults to 8. You can raise it on a PC server, but each player who spreads out across the map adds load, so size RAM and CPU to your real peak. Crossplay servers are capped at 8 by The Fun Pimps' crossplay server requirements, along with Easy Anti-Cheat on and no mods. Our 7 Days to Die crossplay server guide has the full list.
Can I run a 7 Days to Die server on my gaming PC?
You can, with enough memory. The game itself needs plenty of RAM, and the server wants 8 GB or more on top, so 32 GB in total is a realistic floor for playing and hosting on one machine. The world only runs while the PC is on, which means no progress and no logins for your friends when you are offline. The full self hosted setup is in how to make a 7 Days to Die server.

FAQ
How much RAM does a 7 Days to Die server need?
8 GB for up to 8 players on vanilla, 12 GB for light mods or up to 16 players, and 16 GB for overhaul mods, huge random worlds or more players.
What world size should I use for a 7 Days to Die server?
6144 suits most groups under 8 players. Go to 8192 for bigger groups, and only use 10240 with 16 GB or more.
Is CPU or RAM more important for 7 Days to Die?
Both matter, but blood moon lag is usually the CPU. Fast single core speed keeps hordes smooth, while RAM decides how big a world and mod list you can run.
How much disk space does a 7 Days to Die server need?
15 to 25 GB on an SSD, more if you keep several random worlds or run overhaul mods.
Why does my server crash while generating a random world?
It ran out of memory. Pick a smaller WorldGenSize or give the server more RAM.
