7 Days to Die Server Stuck Generating World? How to Fix It
A 7 Days to Die server stuck on random world generation is usually short on RAM or was restarted mid way. Fix it, or generate the map on your PC.

A 7 Days to Die server that seems stuck generating a random world (RWG) is usually doing one of three things: still working, because big maps take a long time; running out of memory and restarting; or tripping over a half generated folder left by an earlier restart. Give it time and watch the log, delete any half finished world in GeneratedWorlds, and if it still will not finish, generate the world on your own PC and upload it. That last option always works.
How long generation should take
The server generates the map once, the first time it starts with a new WorldGenSeed and WorldGenSize. After that it loads the saved map in seconds. Rough expectations:
| World size | First generation |
|---|---|
| 4096 (4K) | A few minutes |
| 6144 (6K) | Several minutes |
| 8192 (8K) | Often 10 minutes or more |
| 10240 (10K) | Much longer, and memory hungry |
Times depend on CPU speed. While it works, players cannot join and the server does not show in the list, which is when most people assume it is stuck. The world size guide covers which size to pick if you are not set on a big map.
Step 1: Watch the log, not the server list
Open the server console or the latest log file. During generation you see lines from the world generator moving through its stages: terrain, towns and roads, prefabs (POIs), then writing the files. As long as new lines keep appearing, it is working.
It is stuck when:
- The log stops for a long time with no new lines.
- The server process restarts and generation starts again from the beginning.
- An error appears, such as an out of memory message or an exception during a generation step.
Step 2: Do not restart mid generation
This is how most "stuck" servers get truly stuck. A restart during generation leaves a half written world in GeneratedWorlds/<world name>/. On the next start the server may try to use that broken folder, fail, or start over and get interrupted again.
Fix it:
- Stop the server.
- Open the
GeneratedWorldsfolder. On Linux servers it is usually~/.local/share/7DaysToDie/GeneratedWorlds/, on Windows%APPDATA%\7DaysToDie\GeneratedWorlds\, unlessUserDataFolderinserverconfig.xmlmoves it. - Find the folder created at the time generation started. The name is generated from the seed and size, a made up place name like "East Halufe Mountains".
- Delete that folder only. Leave other worlds alone.
- Start the server and leave it until the log says the world has loaded.
Automatic restarts and crash watchers can trigger the restart without you noticing. Pause any scheduled restart until generation finishes.
Step 3: Check memory
Generation needs a lot more memory than running an already generated world of the same size. A server that runs fine on 6K can run out of memory generating 10K. Signs:
- The process disappears with no error in the game log.
- An out of memory line appears just before the restart.
- The host shows memory pinned at the limit during generation.
Fixes, from easiest:
- Pick a smaller world size. 6K is plenty for most groups.
- Generate on your PC instead (Step 4). Your PC needs the memory once, the server never does.
- Upgrade the server's RAM for the generation and step back down afterwards. The requirements guide has memory figures by world size.

Step 4: Generate the world on your PC and upload it
This skips server side generation entirely and is the most reliable route.
- In 7 Days to Die on your PC, open New Game, choose a random generated world, and use the world generator with the seed and size you want. Click generate and wait. You can preview the map before playing, which helps you pick a good seed.
- Close the game once it finishes. The world is in
%APPDATA%\7DaysToDie\GeneratedWorlds\<world name>\. - Make sure your PC and the server run the same game version, since a world generated on a different version can fail to load.
- Upload the whole
<world name>folder into the server'sGeneratedWorldsfolder. - Set the server's world to that exact folder name, not
RWG:
<property name="GameWorld" value="East Halufe Mountains"/>
<property name="GameName" value="Season2"/>
- Start the server. It loads the uploaded map right away.
On a GamezServers server, upload the folder in the Files tab or over SFTP, type the folder name in the World setting, and pick a new Save name.
Step 5: Use a pregenerated world
The game ships with ready made random worlds, named PREGEN01 and up, in the game's Data/Worlds folder. They need no generation at all:
<property name="GameWorld" value="PREGEN01"/>
They are a good choice when you want a random style map tonight and do not care which one. Navezgane, the handmade map, also loads without generation.
Mods and generation
Overhaul mods that add prefabs or change world generation make generation slower and more fragile. If generation fails only with mods installed, generate on your PC with the same mods, or check the mod page for its own supported worlds. Some overhauls ship pregenerated maps for exactly this reason. EAC must be off for mods with custom code, as covered in installing mods on a 7 Days to Die server.
A faster path
On a GamezServers 7 Days to Die server, world, seed, size and save name are panel settings, the live console shows generation progress, and you can raise the plan for a big generation and drop it again later (plan changes are prorated). Uploading a PC generated world is a drag and drop in the file manager. To start a server for your group, see the 7 Days to Die game page.

FAQ
How long does a 7 Days to Die server take to generate a world?
From a few minutes for 4K to 10 minutes or more for 8K, and longer for 10K. It only happens once per seed and size.
Why does my server generate the world again every restart?
Generation never finished, usually because the server restarted or ran out of memory mid way. Delete the half generated folder and let it finish once.
Can I upload a world I generated in single player?
Yes. Upload the folder from GeneratedWorlds and set GameWorld to its name. Use a new GameName for a fresh save on it.
Does a bigger world need more server RAM?
Yes, both to generate and to run. Generating is the heavier of the two.
