What comes set up on a StarMade server

Ships block by block

Fighters, carriers and stations built from the same voxels, flown and fought in the same persistent universe.

Faction territory

Claims, stations and fleets stay put between sessions, so territory wars actually mean something.

Full server.cfg control

Player cap, sector size, PvP rules, blueprint limits and dozens more options, editable in the file manager.

Backups before big fights

Take a one click backup before a war night or an update, and roll back if the universe gets wrecked.

How to join your StarMade server

  1. 1

Install StarMade through Steam or the official launcher and start it.

  2. 2

Click Online Play on the main menu.

  3. 3

Enter 203.0.113.24 in the address field at the bottom of the window.

  4. 4

Connect and wait for the universe to load.

Common problems

Players need the same StarMade build as the server. If someone can't join after a launcher update, have them pick the server's version in the launcher's build list.

Most settings live in server.cfg. Stop the server, edit, then start again, or your changes may be overwritten.

Lag around big fleets? Lower the number of active sectors players can load, or limit ship sizes with blueprint rules.

Players type the address with its port, like 203.0.113.24, in the field at the bottom of Online Play.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

StarMade server hosting, explained

StarMade is a voxel space sandbox from Schine where everything, from a small fighter to a massive station, is built block by block. The universe is procedurally generated and huge, with planets, stations, pirates and trading guilds spread across star systems. Multiplayer is where it gets its edge: players form factions, claim systems, mine and trade, and send fleets at each other.

It is an older game with a smaller crowd than its peak, but it is still alive. Community developers have kept updating it since Schine paused official work, and they are working on a large Universe Update. The players who remain are dedicated builders and faction veterans, and a well run server becomes their home. Updates still land, and the faction and fleet systems are as deep as ever.

A persistent server is the only way faction territory and fleets mean anything. It keeps ships, stations and claims in place between sessions and lets people play on their own hours. StarMade's options live in server.cfg, from the player cap and sector size to PvP rules and blueprint limits. Edit it in our file manager or over SFTP, and choose which server jar to run in the panel.

StarMade runs on Java, so memory goes to the sectors players have loaded and the ships moving through them. Big ships and lots of active sectors cost the most. 4 GB suits a small group of builders. For a faction server with 15 or more players and large fleets, use 6 GB, and move to 8 GB if players spread across many systems at once.

Common questions

How many players can join a StarMade server?

StarMade sets the cap with MAX_CLIENTS in server.cfg, which defaults to 32. Edit it in the file manager and restart.

How do I connect to a StarMade server?

Open Online Play, enter the server address with its port in the field at the bottom of the window, and connect.

Can Windows, Mac and Linux players play together?

Yes. StarMade runs on all three, so they can share a server as long as everyone is on the same version.

Where do I change server settings?

Most StarMade settings live in server.cfg. Edit it through the file manager or SFTP, then restart from the panel.

Can I turn off PvP?

Yes. server.cfg has options for PvP and faction damage rules, so you can run a peaceful building server.

Can players bring their own ship designs?

Yes. Players save ships as blueprints and can spawn them on the server under its blueprint and credit rules.

Is StarMade still updated?

Yes, by a team of community developers. Updates are slower than in its early years, and a big Universe Update is in progress.

How much RAM does a StarMade server need?

4 GB for a small group, 6 GB for a faction server and 8 GB for a busy universe with fleets everywhere.

Is GamezServers affiliated with StarMade?

No. You rent and control your own dedicated StarMade server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
