On this page

StarMade admin commands are typed into chat with a leading slash, like /give_credits PlayerName 100000, by a player who is on the server's admin list. Make yourself admin by running /add_admin YourName in the server console, or by adding your name to admins.txt while the server is stopped. The same commands work in the server console, which is how you run them when nobody is logged in. /list_admins shows who has rights.

The tables below cover the commands that matter for running a real server: moderation, moving people and ships around, cleaning up lag, and protecting sectors.

Becoming admin

Command What it does
/add_admin PlayerName Gives admin rights
/remove_admin PlayerName Removes them
/list_admins Lists everyone with admin rights

Names must match exactly, including case. If you add yourself while you are online and commands still fail, reconnect.

On a server without registry authentication, anyone can join under any name. If your admin's name is Captain, someone else can log in as Captain and inherit the rights. Either turn on USE_STARMADE_AUTHENTICATION and REQUIRE_STARMADE_AUTHENTICATION in server.cfg, or keep the server whitelisted.

Moderation

Command What it does
/kick PlayerName Removes a player from the server
/ban_name PlayerName Bans a player name
/ban_ip 203.0.113.5 Bans an IP address
/unban_name PlayerName Lifts a name ban
/unban_ip 203.0.113.5 Lifts an IP ban
/list_banned_name Lists banned names
/list_banned_ip Lists banned IPs
/kill_character PlayerName Kills a player's character
/last_changed Shows who spawned and last edited the structure you have selected

/last_changed is the grief investigation tool. Select the damaged ship or station, run it, and it tells you the unique ID of who touched it last.

Whitelist

Command What it does
/whitelist_activate true Turns the whitelist on
/whitelist_activate false Turns it off
/whitelist_name PlayerName Adds a name
/whitelist_ip 203.0.113.5 Adds an IP
/list_whitelist_name Lists whitelisted names

The whitelist is the easiest way to run a private faction server. Add every member's name, then switch it on.

Messages and server control

Command What it does
/server_message_broadcast info "Restart in 5 minutes" Pop up message to everyone. Use error instead of info for a red one
/server_message_to info PlayerName "Check your mail" Pop up to one player
/force_save Saves the universe to disk now
/shutdown 60 Shuts down after 60 seconds with a countdown. A negative value cancels it
/status Shows server status

Before a planned restart, broadcast a warning, run /force_save, then /shutdown 60. That gives players time to dock and nothing built in the last minutes is lost.

Teleporting and moving players

Command What it does
/tp_to PlayerName Warps you to a player
/tp PlayerName Warps a player to you
/change_sector X Y Z Moves you (or the ship you control) to a sector
/change_sector_for PlayerName X Y Z Moves another player to a sector
/teleport_self_to X Y Z Moves you to a position inside the current sector
/teleport_to PlayerName X Y Z Moves a player to a position in their sector
/jump Jumps you to the object you are looking at
/set_global_spawn Makes your current location the default spawn

Sector coordinates are whole numbers like 2 2 2, which is the default spawn sector. Positions inside a sector are decimals like 0.0 1.0 3.5.

Items, credits and building

Command What it does
/give PlayerName "Item Name" 100 Gives an item by name
/giveid PlayerName 1 100 Gives an item by block ID
/give_credits PlayerName 100000 Gives credits to a player
/god_mode PlayerName true Makes the player invincible
/creative_mode PlayerName true Gives access to the creative inventory
/invisibility_mode PlayerName true Hides the player from others

Set the same commands to false to turn them off. creative_mode is handy for an event builder or a staff build team without opening creative to everyone.

Sectors, entities and lag cleanup

Command What it does
/sector_chmod 2 2 2 + peace No enemy spawns in that sector
/sector_chmod 2 2 2 + protect Weapons cannot destroy blocks in that sector
/sector_chmod 2 2 2 - protect Removes the protection
/destroy_entity Destroys the entity you have selected
/despawn_sector MOB_ unused true 2 2 2 Removes unused pirate ships in a sector
/despawn_all MOB_ unused true Removes unused pirate ships everywhere
/search ShipName Finds which sector a named structure is in
/list_ships Lists ships in the universe
/repair_sector X Y Z Tries to fix a sector's registry entries

A protected, peaceful spawn sector is the usual setup for a public server: /sector_chmod 2 2 2 + peace and /sector_chmod 2 2 2 + protect. It stops new players being farmed the moment they arrive.

When the server lags, /despawn_all MOB_ unused true clears pirate ships nobody is using, which often brings a struggling server back. /destroy_entity cannot be undone, so take a backup first if the structure might belong to someone.

Factions

Command What it does
/faction_create Name Description Creates a faction
/faction_join_id PlayerName 10001 Puts a player in a faction by ID
/faction_list Lists factions and their IDs
/faction_list_members 10001 Lists a faction's members
/faction_del_member PlayerName 10001 Removes a member
/faction_delete 10001 Deletes a faction

Use these to rescue a faction whose only leader left the server for good, or to set up a server owned faction for trade stations.

StarMade fleets around a station

Finding the rest

StarMade has more commands than this, and builds add or rename some. Type /help in game for the list your version supports, with each command's parameters.

If you are still setting the server up, how to host a StarMade server covers server.cfg and ports, and StarMade can't connect to server fixes join problems.

On a GamezServers StarMade server, the live console in the panel runs every command above without joining the game, which is the fastest way to add your first admin. admins.txt and server.cfg are in the file manager, and a one click backup before /destroy_entity or a big cleanup means a mistake costs a restore, not a universe.

FAQ

How do I make myself admin in StarMade?

Run /add_admin YourName in the server console, or add your name on its own line in admins.txt with the server stopped. Then reconnect.

How do I give credits on a StarMade server?

Use /give_credits PlayerName 100000 from chat as an admin or from the server console.

How do I stop pirates spawning at spawn?

Run /sector_chmod 2 2 2 + peace for the spawn sector, or set ENEMY_SPAWNING to false in server.cfg to stop them everywhere.

How do I clear lag from pirate ships?

/despawn_all MOB_ unused true removes unused pirate ships across the universe. Take a backup first if you are unsure.

Can I run admin commands without joining the game?
