What comes set up on a CryoFall server

PvE or PvP

Flip one value in ServerRates.config to switch PvP on or off, and set raid windows with an admin command.

Your own rates

Tune gathering, crafting, learning and progression speed so a season fits how often your group plays.

Whitelist and operators

Keep the server private with a whitelist, and add your name to the operator list for kick, mute and admin tools.

Hundreds on a small plan

The developer's own guide puts 300 players at around 2.5 GB of memory, so most communities fit a small plan.

How to join your CryoFall server

  1. 1

Install CryoFall from Steam and launch it.

  2. 2

Open Servers from the main menu.

  3. 3

For a public server, find it in the Community list. For a private one, open the Custom list and add 203.0.113.24.

  4. 4

    Select the server and join.

Common problems

Settings in ServerRates.config do nothing? Each one is commented out by default. Remove the # in front of the line as well as changing the value.

Private server not in the list? Private servers don't show under Community servers. Players add the address to the Custom list instead.

Fresh wipe: stop the server, take a backup, and start a new world. Agree on the date with your players first, since the old world is gone.

Operator commands start with a slash in the console, opened with the tilde key: for example /mod.whiteList.add followed by a player name.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

CryoFall server hosting, explained

CryoFall is a top down sci-fi survival game from AtomicTorch Studio, set on an abandoned colony planet. Players start with stone tools and climb through farming, industry, cybernetics and power grids, while dealing with each other along the way. Servers run as persistent worlds where dozens or hundreds of players stake out land, trade, form factions and, on PvP servers, raid each other's bases.

Public servers wipe on someone else's schedule and follow someone else's rules. On your own server you pick PvE or PvP, set the rates for gathering, crafting and progression, schedule raid windows and decide who gets operator access. The game was built to be modded, and the server's ModsConfig.xml decides which mods load. Owners can also block client side mods, which is worth doing on a PvP server.

Setup happens in three files in the file manager. SettingsServer.xml holds the server name, whether it is public and the operator list. ServerRates.config holds the PvP switch and every rate, with each line commented out until you enable it. ModsConfig.xml lists mods. Whitelist, kick and mute commands run from the in game console once you are an operator. Auto update is a toggle in the panel.

CryoFall's server is unusually efficient. AtomicTorch's own guide lists 1.5 GB of memory for 30 players, 2 GB for 100 and about 2.5 GB for 300, and the server can't use more than two CPU cores anyway. So 2 GB covers a friend group, 4 GB covers a big public community with headroom to spare, and 6 GB is only worth it for heavy mod setups.

Common questions

How many players can a CryoFall server handle?

Hundreds. AtomicTorch's hardware guide covers servers up to around 300 players, and memory stays low even at that size.

How do I switch between PvE and PvP?

Open ServerRates.config in the file manager, find the PvP setting, set it to 1 for PvP or 0 for PvE, remove the # in front of it and restart.

How do I make myself an operator?

Add your player name to the operators list in SettingsServer.xml and restart. Then open the console with the tilde key and use the admin and mod commands.

Can I make the server private?

Yes. Set the server to not public in SettingsServer.xml, then turn on the whitelist with /mod.whiteList.enabled 1 and add players with /mod.whiteList.add.

Does CryoFall support mods on a server?

Yes. The game is built to be modded and the server loads mods listed in ModsConfig.xml. You can also stop players from using client mods.

How do friends find my server?

Public servers show in the Community list. For a private server, players add the address to their Custom list in the Servers menu.

How do I wipe the world?

Take a backup, then start a new world. Everything on the old map is gone after a wipe, so warn your players first.

Is CryoFall still getting updates?

CryoFall left Early Access in 2021 and is a finished game. The playerbase is smaller now, which is why most groups run their own server with their own rules.

Is GamezServers affiliated with CryoFall?

No. You rent and control your own dedicated CryoFall server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
