Why modded groups host with us

tModLoader picked in the panel

Vanilla Terraria cannot load mods, so a modded world needs the tModLoader server. Choose it as your server type and it is installed for you, with the release tag in the tModLoader version setting if you need a specific one.

Players join through tModLoader, not regular Terraria. It compares their mods with the server and offers to download the server's versions, so the host's list is the one that counts and friends never have to subscribe to every mod first.

Upload a whole mod pack at once

Build and test your list in tModLoader on your own PC, then go to Workshop, Mod Packs and Save Enabled as New Mod Pack. Open the folder and you have every .tmod file plus enabled.json, the list of internal names the server loads.

Upload both into the server's mods folder from the Files tab. Calamity is a large file, so for big lists click Show SFTP login and use FileZilla or WinSCP. Start the server and the console lists each mod as it loads.

6 GB for Calamity and a few extras

Calamity needs CalamityMod and CalamityModMusic, and loading it takes far more memory than vanilla ever uses. Boss fights full of projectiles add more. Pro gives you 6 GB and up to 32 players for 14.99 USD a month, the size we would buy for Calamity with Boss Checklist, Recipe Browser and Magic Storage, or Calamity alongside Thorium.

A handful of lighter mods runs well on Standard with 4 GB. Guessed low? Move up a plan from the dashboard, prorated, and the world stays put.

Keep every bit of modded progress

A modded world is two files: the .wld and the .twld that holds all the modded blocks and items. Upload both together and nothing is lost. Calamity adds biomes, ores and structures at world generation, so a fresh world made with it enabled gets the full experience, and planning Revengeance or Death means making it Expert or Master.

The world is backed up before every game update, and the Backup button keeps more copies, so take one before each boss or mod update.

Stable versions, matched for everyone

Run the latest stable tModLoader on the server and every client. Stable tModLoader and Calamity are built on Terraria 1.4.4 while the 1.4.5 port is still in beta, and players on the beta cannot join a stable server. When a mod updates on the Workshop, upload the new .tmod files and restart so everyone can keep joining.

How to join your Terraria server

  1. 1

Launch Terraria, or tModLoader for a modded server, on the same version as your server.

  2. 2

Click Multiplayer, then Join via IP.

  3. 3

Pick your character, then enter 203.0.113.24 as the IP.

  4. 4

Enter 7777 as the port, then the server password if it has one.

Common problems

IP and port go in separate screens

Terraria asks for the IP first and the port on the next screen. Do not type the colon.

Modded server will not let you in

Join a tModLoader server from tModLoader, not regular Terraria, and on the same tModLoader version as the server. tModLoader downloads the server's mods when you connect.

TShock asks you to log in

TShock servers can require an account. Type /register with a password in chat, then /login. The owner gets full rights with the one time /setup code shown in the server console on the first start.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Common questions

Do my friends need to download the mods themselves?

No. When they join through tModLoader, it offers to download the server's mods for them. They do need tModLoader, which is free on Steam for anyone who owns Terraria.

How much RAM does a Calamity server need?

Plan for 4 to 6 GB. Calamity alone with 2 to 4 players fits 4 GB, while Calamity plus quality of life mods for up to 8 players, or Calamity with Thorium, wants 6 GB.

Can I switch my vanilla server to tModLoader?

Yes. Change the server type in the panel and back up first. Note that stable tModLoader is still on Terraria 1.4.4, so a world saved in vanilla 1.4.5 will not open in it.

Can console or mobile players join?

No. tModLoader only exists on PC, so only PC players running tModLoader can join a modded server.

Can I run TShock plugins with my mods?

No. TShock and tModLoader are separate server types. Pick tModLoader for content mods and TShock for admin tools on vanilla gameplay.

Why is a friend kicked during mod sync?

Their mod versions differ from the server, usually after a Workshop update. Upload the new .tmod files to the server, restart and let them resync.

Is 2 GB enough?

For vanilla with a few friends, yes. Modded worlds like Calamity want 4 GB or more.

Can I upload my existing world?

Yes. Stop the server and upload the .wld file from your Terraria Worlds folder into saves/Worlds (vanilla and tModLoader) or the server folder (TShock). Set World name to the file name without .wld and start. Your character stays on your own PC.

Can I run Calamity and other mods?

Yes. Switch the server to tModLoader, upload the .tmod files to the mods folder, list them in mods/enabled.json and restart. Players join through tModLoader. Calamity and bigger mod lists run best on 4 to 6 GB.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
