The best Terraria mods for multiplayer in 2026 are the big content mods, Calamity Mod and Thorium Mod, plus team friendly helpers like Magic Storage, Shared World Map, Boss Checklist, Recipe Browser, Census and Fargo's Mutant Mod. They all run on tModLoader for Terraria 1.4.4, and tModLoader downloads the server's mods for each player when they join.
How do Terraria mods work in multiplayer?
Modded Terraria runs on tModLoader, a free separate game on Steam. A modded server runs the tModLoader server, and players join from tModLoader, not regular Terraria. Mods marked as needed on both sides are downloaded automatically from the server when a player connects, so friends do not install anything by hand. Purely client side mods, like zoom or visual tweaks, can be used by each player on their own.
One thing to know in October 2026: tModLoader's stable release is still based on Terraria 1.4.4, while vanilla Terraria is on 1.4.5.8. Every mod below works on the 1.4.4 based tModLoader. Read when tModLoader updates to 1.4.5 for the latest on the port.
All picks are among the most subscribed mods on the tModLoader Steam Workshop, which passed 10,000 mods according to Re-Logic's September 2026 State of the Game.
Best content mods for a multiplayer playthrough
These change the whole game and are the main reason groups run modded servers.
| Mod | What it adds | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Calamity Mod | A huge expansion with new bosses, biomes, items and a full post Moon Lord progression | Groups who know vanilla well and want a long, hard campaign |
| Thorium Mod | New classes (Bard and Healer), bosses and items that fit alongside vanilla | Groups who want more content without Calamity's difficulty |
| Fargo's Souls Mod | Eternity Mode, which reworks vanilla bosses to be much harder, plus Souls and Forces accessories | Experienced teams who want vanilla to fight back |
| Calamity Mod Infernum Mode | Reworked, much harder Calamity boss fights | Calamity veterans |
| Spirit Classic | New biomes, bosses and events | A fresh but approachable content run |
| Consolaria | Ports content that used to be exclusive to old console versions | Players curious about the old console content |
Calamity and Thorium together are a very popular multiplayer pairing, but they make the server heavier. Our Calamity mod server guide covers its add ons and setup.
Bard and Healer in Thorium are designed around supporting other players, which makes them a good reason to pick Thorium for a group.
Best quality of life mods for teams
These are light, rarely conflict, and make playing together smoother.
| Mod | What it does | Why it helps in multiplayer |
|---|---|---|
| Magic Storage | Builds a storage network with one searchable interface and crafting from storage | Ends the "who has the hellstone" chest hunt |
| Shared World Map | Shares map exploration between players | Everyone sees what anyone has explored |
| Boss Checklist | Lists bosses and events in progression order with what you need | Keeps the team on the same plan, essential with Calamity |
| Recipe Browser | Looks up any recipe and what an item is used for | Fewer questions in chat |
| Census: Town NPC Checklist | Shows which town NPCs you have and how to get the rest | Helps whoever is building the town |
| Fargo's Mutant Mod | NPCs that sell boss summons and other items, plus endless ammo and potions at stack thresholds | Lets late joiners re fight bosses and saves grinding |
| AlchemistNPC Lite | Town NPCs that sell potions and materials | Cuts down potion farming before boss fights |
| Wing Slot Extra | A dedicated slot for wings | Frees an accessory slot for everyone |
| Ore Excavator | Veinmining, breaking a whole ore vein at once | Faster mining for the whole team |
| Auto Trash | Automatically trashes items you mark | Less inventory clutter on long sessions |
| Shorter Respawn Time | Shortens the respawn timer | Less waiting during hard boss fights |
| Quality of Terraria | A collection of quality of life changes | Many small fixes in one mod |
Best admin mods for server owners
| Mod | What it does |
|---|---|
| HERO's Mod | Admin and permission tools for multiplayer: groups, item spawning, teleporting and more |
| Cheat Sheet | Item browser and creative tools, best kept for admins or building servers |
If you want admin tools and permissions without asking players to install tModLoader, consider TShock instead. It runs plugins on a vanilla server, and players join with normal Terraria. See TShock commands for Terraria servers.
How much RAM does a modded Terraria server need?
Memory grows with the mods you load and the size of the world.
| Server | RAM |
|---|---|
| Vanilla, small or medium world | 2 GB |
| Large vanilla world, or tModLoader with a few quality of life mods | 4 GB |
| Calamity, Thorium, or a long mod list | 6 GB |
Big content mods add many items, NPCs and projectiles, and boss fights with lots on screen are where an undersized server stutters first.
Tips for running a modded multiplayer world
- Pick the mod list before creating the world. Content mods add ores and biomes during world generation. Adding Calamity to an old world misses its world gen content.
- Keep everyone on the same tModLoader version. If one player joins a beta branch, they cannot join the stable server.
- Back up before adding or removing mods. Removing a mod deletes its items from the world.
- Test the list in single player first, then upload the same
.tmodfiles to the server. - Check mod configs. Server side configs apply to everyone, so agree on them as a group.
The step by step setup, including enabled.json, is in how to add mods to a Terraria server.
Running a modded Terraria server with GamezServers
Choose tModLoader in the panel, upload your .tmod files to the mods folder and list them in mods/enabled.json, then restart. Players connect through tModLoader and download the mods automatically. Plans are 2 GB for 4.99 USD, 4 GB for 9.99 USD and 6 GB for 14.99 USD a month, sized for 8, 16 and 32 players, with 50% off the first month for new customers. Back up your world before every boss with one click. See Terraria server hosting.
FAQ
What is the best Terraria mod for multiplayer?
Calamity Mod is the most popular content mod, and Magic Storage plus Boss Checklist are the most useful helpers for a group. Thorium is a strong pick if you want more content with gentler difficulty.
Do all players need the same Terraria mods?
Players need every mod the server marks as required on both sides, and tModLoader downloads them automatically on join. Client side mods can differ between players.
Can vanilla Terraria players join a modded server?
No. Players must launch tModLoader to join a tModLoader server, and it must be the same tModLoader version as the server.
Do Terraria mods work on 1.4.5?
Not yet. tModLoader's stable release still runs on Terraria 1.4.4, and mods will need updates once tModLoader 1.4.5 is released.
Can I run Calamity and Thorium together?
Yes, they are a popular multiplayer combination. Give the server 6 GB of RAM for both.
