What comes set up on a RimWorld: Open World server
One shared planet
Every player runs their own colony at their own pace, but settlements share a world where you trade, gift and trouble each other.
Enforced mod list
Turn on Enforce Mods so every player loads the same list, or use the blacklist to block only the mods you know cause trouble.
Whitelist for friends
Use Whitelist keeps the server to the names in the whitelist file, the simplest way to run a private group world.
Same difficulty for all
Use Custom Difficulty forces one difficulty file on every player, so nobody quietly plays on easier settings.

Common problems
Open World was built for RimWorld 1.4 and has not been updated since 2023. Players on 1.5 or 1.6 need to switch RimWorld to the 1.4 branch in Steam's Betas tab before they can join.
Player Version in the panel must match the Open World client version your group installed, or the server turns players away. Check it before anyone joins.
Mismatched mods are the classic way an Open World server breaks. Put the required mods in the enforced mods folder, turn on Enforce Mods, and share the same list with everyone.
With Use Custom Difficulty on, fill in every value in the difficulty file. Anything left blank counts as 0 percent.
Server not responding
Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.
Use the server address
Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.
No port forwarding or firewall changes
Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.
RimWorld: Open World server hosting, explained
Open World is a fan made multiplayer mod for RimWorld that turns the single player colony game into a shared server. Everyone plays their own colony at their own pace, but the planet is common ground: you see other players' settlements, trade and gift resources, barter, chat, and make life harder for rivals. Every player needs their own copy of RimWorld, and the mod is not made or endorsed by Ludeon Studios.
Be clear eyed about the state of the mod. Its creators marked the Workshop release abandoned and open sourced it, and it targets RimWorld 1.4, so your group has to run that version through Steam's betas branch. For friends who want a cozy shared world on 1.4 with a fixed mod list, it still works, and a dedicated server keeps that world reachable without anyone hosting at home.
Mismatched mod lists are how Open World servers fall apart, and the server is where you fix that. The panel has Enforce Mods, a mod blacklist, a whitelist, custom difficulty, permission for custom scenarios, the Open World version and the client version it accepts. Mod folders and the whitelist and difficulty files are edited through the file manager or SFTP, and the live console shows logins and commands.
Colonies simulate on each player's own PC, so the server process stays small. 1 GB handles the default 10 slots, and 2 GB covers a busier group with a big enforced mod list. Only go to 4 GB for a large public server with many player saves. Enforced mods take disk space more than memory. Sleep when empty can stop a quiet server after 4 days and wake it with one click.

Common questions
Is the Open World mod still maintained?
No. Its creators marked the Workshop release abandoned and open sourced it. It still runs on RimWorld 1.4, so plan around that version.
Which RimWorld version do players need?
RimWorld 1.4. Players on newer versions can switch to the 1.4 branch from the Betas tab in the game's Steam properties.
How many players does an Open World server hold?
Our setup starts at 10 and you can raise Max Players in the panel. Since colonies run on each player's PC, a small server handles more people than you might expect.
How do I stop desyncs from mismatched mods?
Turn on Enforce Mods and put the required mods in the enforced mods folder. If you leave it off, use the mod blacklist to block known troublemakers.
Can I make my Open World server private?
Yes. Turn on Use Whitelist in the panel and add usernames to the whitelist file. Only listed players can join.
Do players need DLC?
DLC is optional for play, but the mod's release notes ask the server owner to generate the world without DLC, ideally with only Open World loaded, so everyone can load it.
Is this the same as RimWorld Together?
No. RimWorld Together is a separate, newer multiplayer mod with its own server. This server runs Open World.
Is Open World made by Ludeon Studios?
No. It is a community mod with no connection to Ludeon Studios. Each player needs their own copy of RimWorld.
Is GamezServers affiliated with RimWorld: Open World?
No. You rent and control your own dedicated RimWorld: Open World server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.
Can my friends and I split the cost?
Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.
Can I build a custom plan?
Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.
Can I pay once instead of a subscription?
Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.
How fast is setup, really?
Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
