What comes set up on a Grand Theft Auto Connected server

Pick your Liberty City

One setting picks the game: GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV or Episodes from Liberty City.

Script it yourself

Write server resources in Lua, JavaScript or Squirrel, upload them over SFTP and list them in server.xml.

Roleplay and freeroam

Peds, traffic and missions sync, so a server can be a city roleplay, a race night or plain freeroam chaos.

Listed or private

Show the server in the GTA Connected browser or keep it off the list and hand friends the address.

How to join your Grand Theft Auto Connected server

  1. 1

Install the client from GTA Connected and open its launcher.

  2. 2

Under Tools, then Game Settings, point it at the EXE of the GTA your server runs.

  3. 3

Choose that game in the Game dropdown at the top.

  4. 4

Double click your server in the list, or launch the game and type /connect 203.0.113.24.

Common problems

GTA IV only works on certain game versions. If the launcher refuses to start the game, check the GTA Connected wiki for the supported version and the downgrade files.

Set the game's EXE path under Tools, then Game Settings in the launcher, or it can't start the right GTA.

If joining fails after an update, clear the launcher cache from its Open menu and try again.

A resource that isn't listed in server.xml never loads. Add a resource line for it and restart.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Modding your Grand Theft Auto Connected server

Everything on a GTA Connected server is a resource: a folder of Lua, JavaScript or Squirrel scripts registered in server.xml. Servers start with the default freeroam resource, and the community shares gamemodes and roleplay scripts on the forum and GitHub.

Grand Theft Auto Connected server hosting, explained

GTA Connected is a fan made multiplayer modification for the classic Grand Theft Auto games: GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV and Episodes from Liberty City. It is an independent community project with no tie to Rockstar Games or Take-Two, and every player needs their own copy of the GTA your server runs. It is still updated, and what a server plays like is up to its scripts: freeroam, deathmatch, races or roleplay.

Scripting is the real draw. Resources are written in Lua, JavaScript or Squirrel, and the mod syncs peds, traffic and even missions, so you can build something quite far from the single player game. Each resource is a folder with a meta.xml, listed in server.xml and loaded on start. Server.xml also holds the player cap, a password, server rules shown in the launcher and cvars like traffic and civilians, all editable in the file manager.

In our panel you pick which GTA the server runs, its name, the server version (latest, or a fixed version if your scripts need one) and whether it shows in the public browser. A dedicated server keeps your resources running around the clock and gives players a fixed address, which matters for roleplay servers where people come back to the same character every night.

The server is lightweight. It tracks players and runs scripts, it doesn't render anything. A freeroam or deathmatch server for friends runs fine on 2 GB. A public server with several resources is comfortable on 4 GB, and a roleplay server with saved player data and a few dozen people online is where 8 GB earns its price. A leaky script hurts more than player count, so check your resources before adding RAM.

Common questions

Which GTA games does GTA Connected support?

GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV and Episodes from Liberty City. A server runs one game at a time, chosen with the Game type setting in the panel.

Do players need to own GTA to join?

Yes. GTA Connected runs on top of an installed copy of the game, so each player needs the GTA title your server uses. GTA IV also has to be on a supported version, which the GTA Connected wiki explains.

Is GTA Connected an official Rockstar product?

No. It is a community made mod with no connection to Rockstar Games or Take-Two. We host the server software, nothing more.

How many players can join?

The default server.xml sets 32 players. Change maxplayers in server.xml to raise or lower it, and give a busy roleplay server more RAM.

How do I add my own scripts?

Upload the resource folder to resources over SFTP or the file manager, add it to the resources list in server.xml, and restart.

How do I put a password on the server?

Set the password field in server.xml through the file manager and restart. Players are asked for it when they join.

Can I keep the server out of the public list?

Yes. Set the server browser option to false in the panel and only people with your address can join.

Does GTA Connected support GTA V?

No. It covers the 3D era games and GTA IV only. GTA V multiplayer mods are separate projects.

Is GamezServers affiliated with Grand Theft Auto Connected?

No. You rent and control your own dedicated Grand Theft Auto Connected server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
