If your game server charge is higher than the plan price, the usual causes are currency conversion and a foreign transaction fee from your bank, sales tax or VAT added at checkout, a first month promotion ending, a prorated charge after an upgrade, or a per person fee on a split bill. A temporary card hold or a second server can also look like an overcharge. Compare the invoice from the host with the line on your bank statement: whichever one shows the extra amount tells you who added it.
Here is how to work out exactly where the difference came from and what you can do about each cause.
Step 1: compare the invoice with your bank statement
- Open the host's invoice for the charge. On most hosts this is in a billing portal or your email receipts.
- Find the total on the invoice and its currency.
- Find the charge on your bank or card statement.
| What you see | Who added the difference |
|---|---|
| Invoice total matches the plan price, bank charge is higher | Your bank or card (conversion or fees) |
| Invoice total is higher than the plan price | The host's checkout (tax, add ons, upgrade, fee) |
| Two charges on your statement | A second server, a hold, or a retried payment |
Causes on the bank side
Currency conversion
Many game hosts price in US dollars. If your card is in another currency, your bank converts the amount at its own exchange rate on the day the charge settles. Rates move, so the same 9.99 USD plan can cost slightly different amounts each month in your currency.
Foreign transaction fees
Some cards add a percentage fee to payments processed abroad or in a foreign currency, even when the merchant is online. It shows as a separate small line or is folded into the converted amount. Your card's fee schedule lists it. Cards that advertise "no foreign transaction fees" avoid it.
Dynamic currency conversion
If a checkout offers to charge you in your home currency instead of the listed one, the rate used may be worse than your bank's. Paying in the listed currency and letting your bank convert is often cheaper.
Causes on the host side
A first month promotion ended
The most common one. Month one was discounted, month two is the regular price. Check the invoice for words like "first month" or a promo code line. More in game server renewal price increases.
Sales tax or VAT
Depending on where you live and the host's setup, tax may be added at checkout on top of the listed price. The invoice shows it as a separate line.
A prorated upgrade
If you or a co owner upgraded the plan mid period, there is an extra charge for the difference over the days left, then the next renewal is at the new plan price.
Add ons
Backups, extra storage, a dedicated IP or a database billed separately. Check every line, and see game server add ons that should be free.
Split billing fees
On split bills, each share often carries a small fee on top of the even split. On GamezServers it is 1 USD per person per payment: a 9.99 USD plan split 3 ways is 12.99 USD in total, or 4.33 USD each.
Your share went up on a split server
If a friend left a split, the remaining people cover their part so the server stays up. That raises each remaining share, up to the full price. On GamezServers, you are emailed before the change, and it applies from a renewal at least 7 days away.
Charges that look like overcharges
- Card verification holds. Some checkouts place a small temporary authorization to check the card. It drops off within a few days and is not a real charge.
- A failed payment retried. If the first attempt failed and a retry succeeded, your bank may briefly show both as pending. Only one settles.
- Two servers. Each server is usually billed on its own. Two servers means two charges, often on different dates.
- A friend's share on your card. If you paid a friend's share link with your own card by mistake, you will see two shares.
- Switching billing length. Moving from monthly to yearly charges the new period today, minus the unused part of the current one.
What to do next
- If it is your bank's fee or rate: use a card without foreign transaction fees, or one in the host's currency.
- If it is a promo ending: decide if the plan size is right. Our guide on checking real RAM usage helps you see if a smaller plan would do.
- If it is an add on you did not want: remove it in the billing area.
- If it is a split change: add a new friend to the split, which brings everyone's share back down.
- If you still cannot explain it: contact the host's support with the invoice number and the exact amount on your statement.
Checking charges on GamezServers
Every GamezServers payment has an invoice in the Stripe customer portal. Sign in, open your dashboard, and click Billing to see and download them. Plan prices are in US dollars and shown on the game page and at checkout before you pay. There are no setup fees, backups and DDoS protection are included, and the only fee is the 1 USD per share on split bills. If something still looks wrong, email support@gamezservers.com with the invoice details. See the billing docs for the full rules, or the split the bill page for how shares are priced.

FAQ
Why was I charged twice for my game server?
Usually a pending retry, a verification hold, or two separate servers. Pending duplicates drop off in a few days. If both settle, contact support with both amounts.
Why does my server cost a different amount every month?
If the host bills in US dollars and your card is in another currency, the exchange rate changes each month.
Do game servers charge sales tax?
It depends on where you live and how the host handles tax. The invoice shows any tax as its own line.
Can I get a refund for a foreign transaction fee?
That fee comes from your bank, not the host. Ask your bank, or use a card without those fees next time.
