The best co-op horror games with dedicated servers are Sons Of The Forest, The Forest, Barotrauma, Abiotic Factor, Killing Floor 2, Left 4 Dead, No More Room in Hell and Project Zomboid. All of them run on a server you control, so the scares, the base and the save are there for the whole group, not locked to one host's PC. Server sizes range from 1 GB for the old Source engine games to 6 to 8 GB for the big survival horror worlds.

Horror plays differently with friends. It is less about jump scares and more about the panic of hearing someone scream on voice chat two rooms away. The games below are built for that, and they fall into two groups: survival horror worlds that persist between sessions, and session based horror you play in rounds or campaigns. A server matters more for the first group, but helps both.

If you want zombies specifically, our best zombie survival games with dedicated servers list goes deeper on 7 Days to Die, DayZ, HumanitZ and the rest.

1. Sons Of The Forest

You land on an island to find a missing billionaire and spend the rest of the game fighting cannibals, mutants and worse. The caves are genuinely frightening with four people, let alone alone. Co-op holds up to 8 players, and groups split naturally into builders and scouts until someone gets dragged off into the trees.

  • Why a server: in normal co-op the island belongs to the host. A dedicated server keeps the base standing and lets anyone play when they want. You can bring an island you started at home by uploading the save folder: how to move a Sons of the Forest save to a dedicated server.
  • RAM: 6 GB for 2 to 4 players, 8 GB for up to 8.

2. The Forest

The original is still a great co-op horror game: a plane crash, a missing son, a peninsula full of cannibals and a cave system that will make your group whisper. It is lighter than its sequel on both client and server, and building fans still grow huge treehouse forts on long running dedicated worlds.

  • RAM: 4 GB for 2 to 4 players early in a save, 6 GB for a full 8.

3. Barotrauma

A submarine under the ice of Europa, where everything leaks, breaks or tries to eat you. Each player takes a job, and the sub only survives if people do theirs. Horror here is a hull breach in ballast while the engineer is still in the reactor room. Traitor modes add betrayal for groups who like it.

  • Players: up to 16, with bots filling missing jobs.
  • RAM: 2 GB for a small crew, 4 GB for a full crew or long modded campaign, 8 GB with heavy Lua mods and big subs.

4. Abiotic Factor

A team of scientists trapped in an underground research facility after containment fails. It is funnier than most horror games, but the dark labs and whatever lives in them still make people jump. The developers built and balanced it for 1 to 6 players, which is where it shines.

  • RAM: 6 GB for 2 to 4 on a fresh save, 8 GB for a full team of 6.

5. Killing Floor 2

Wave after wave of Zeds, a trader between rounds and a boss at the end. It is more action than dread, but the Zed designs and Hell on Earth difficulty make up for it. Steam and Epic players can play together on unmodded servers. Workshop maps, Controlled Difficulty and Zedternal Reborn all load on the server.

  • Players: 6 in Survival co-op, 12 in Versus.
  • RAM: 3 GB stock, 4 GB with a Workshop map rotation.

6. Left 4 Dead

Valve's 2008 original has a darker tone than the sequel, harder hitting Tanks and campaigns like No Mercy and Death Toll that people still love. A dedicated server takes hosting off one player's PC so nobody has a ping advantage and the round does not end when the host quits.

  • RAM: 1 GB for four player co-op on the original campaigns.

7. No More Room in Hell

Free on Steam and deliberately unforgiving: scarce ammo, no crosshair, and a bite that can turn you. Objective maps push the group toward an escape, survival maps make you barricade and hold. A September 2026 engine update added 64-bit support and Steam Networking.

  • Players: 8.
  • RAM: 1 GB on official maps.

8. Project Zomboid

Zomboid's horror is slow. You know how you die, the game tells you at the start, and the dread comes from watching supplies run low and the horde grow. A dedicated server keeps Knox County persistent for weeks, which is when the game is at its most tense.

Setting up horror for a group

A few server settings change how scary these games feel:

  1. Darker nights. Most survival horror games let you set day and night length. Longer nights mean more time in the dark.
  2. Friendly fire on. Panic plus friendly fire makes every encounter louder.
  3. Proximity voice. Barotrauma has radio and local voice built in, and it changes everything.
  4. Difficulty with a safety net. Keep a backup before a hard boss or a deep cave run. One click backups let you roll back a wipe that ruined the evening.

Why a server for horror co-op

The horror games that keep a world, Sons Of The Forest, The Forest, Abiotic Factor and Project Zomboid, lose most of their pull when the world only exists while the host is online. The session games, Killing Floor 2, Left 4 Dead and No More Room in Hell, play better when nobody hosts from a home connection. A GamezServers server covers both: live in about a minute, no port forwarding, the world online when you are not, and the bill split with up to 10 friends. Start with Sons Of The Forest or Barotrauma.
