What comes set up on a SourceCoop server

Campaign co-op

Run through Black Mesa from the tram ride to Xen together, with difficulty that scales to how many people joined.

Gear carries over

Weapons and ammo follow each player from one map to the next, so the campaign plays like it does solo.

Start on any chapter

Set the Starting Map in the panel to jump straight to a chapter your group has not finished yet.

Pinned mod builds

Choose the SourceCoop release, SourceMod and Metamod builds in the panel when an update needs a specific pairing.

How to join your SourceCoop server

  1. 1

Launch Black Mesa and enable the developer console in the game's options.

  2. 2

Open the console with the ~ key.

  3. 3

If the server has a password, type password {SERVER_PASSWORD} and press Enter.

  4. 4

Type connect 203.0.113.24 and press Enter.

Common problems

Black Mesa hides the console by default. Turn on the developer console in the game's options before you try to connect.

A map hangs or crashes on load? Turn off mod_forcetouchdata in the panel. It stops map data pre-caching, which fixes certain maps.

After a Black Mesa patch, update the server too. Its update option is off by default, so switch it on or reinstall, then check SourceCoop still loads.

Custom Workshop maps do not download on connect. Everyone subscribes to the same maps before joining.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Modding your SourceCoop server

SourceCoop itself runs on SourceMod and Metamod:Source, so the server can also load other SourceMod plugins. It is GPL licensed and released on GitHub, with optional addons in the same project.

SourceCoop server hosting, explained

SourceCoop is a free, fan-made server-side mod that lets several players run through single player Source engine campaigns together, with Black Mesa as its main target. It is not made by or affiliated with Crowbar Collective or Valve. Everyone who joins needs their own copy of Black Mesa, but nobody installs anything extra. The co-op logic lives entirely on the server, so friends just connect and play.

It plays like the campaign you know, with more people in the room. Equipment and ammo persist between maps, difficulty scales with player count, and teammates can revive each other, with a survival mode option for groups who want deaths to count. You can also start the server on any chapter. Expect the combat to feel different with four crowbars in the room, and the boss fights to get loud.

Since it runs on the server, a hosted server is its natural home. SourceCoop needs SourceMod and Metamod:Source, and our setup installs both, with fields to pick the SourceCoop release and the SourceMod and Metamod builds. You can also set the starting map, max players, password and friendly fire, plus a toggle for map data pre-caching if certain maps hang. Config files and extra plugins are in the file manager.

SourceCoop is light. It is a Source engine server with one map loaded at a time, so a small group fits in 2 GB and a full co-op crew of ten sits well on 4 GB. Bigger lobbies with custom Workshop maps can use 6 GB. CPU speed matters more than memory for a smooth Source server, so do not overbuy RAM here.

Common questions

Do players need Black Mesa to join?

Yes. SourceCoop is a server mod for Black Mesa, so every player needs the game on Steam. They do not need any client side mods.

How many players can a SourceCoop server hold?

Our setup defaults to 10 and accepts up to 128. The campaign plays best with a smaller group, so set a sensible cap.

Can we start partway through the campaign?

Yes. Set Starting Map in the panel to the map name of the chapter you want, then restart the server.

Do weapons carry between maps?

Yes. SourceCoop keeps each player's weapons and ammo between maps, as the single player game does.

Do custom maps download automatically?

Most files download when players connect, but custom Workshop maps do not. Players subscribe to those maps on the Workshop before joining.

What if a map crashes or hangs on load?

Turn off the mod_forcetouchdata option in the panel. It controls map data pre-caching, and disabling it fixes hangs on some maps.

Can I add other SourceMod plugins?

Yes. Upload compiled plugins to the SourceMod plugins folder through the file manager. Test them, since not every plugin expects a co-op campaign.

Is SourceCoop official?

No. It is an independent open source project. Crowbar Collective and Valve do not make or support it.

Is GamezServers affiliated with SourceCoop?

No. You rent and control your own dedicated SourceCoop server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
