Common problems

The official dedicated server build has lagged behind the Steam game since 2022. If you get a version mismatch error, players have to roll their game back to the server's build through Steam, so check this before you commit.

Join through the developer console, not the menus. Open it with Ctrl + Alt + ~ and paste the connect line from the steps below.

Leave the password empty and you still need cl_password ""; before connect, or the console tries the last password you used.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Risk of Rain 2 server hosting, explained

Risk of Rain 2 is a third-person roguelike where you crash on an alien planet, stack items into absurd builds and try to escape before the difficulty clock runs away from you. Co-op is how most people play it: up to four survivors per run, reviving each other and arguing over who grabs the red item. Runs are short and replayable, so a group can get through several in one evening.

Runs do not persist the way a survival world does, so the case for a dedicated server is convenience and connection. The lobby stays up, nobody's home connection is the bottleneck, and friends can join without the usual host being online. Our panel covers the server password, hostname, max players, whether the server is listed publicly, and auto updates. Friends can drop in mid evening and pick up the next run with whoever is online.

Be aware of one real catch before you buy. The official dedicated server tool on Steam has not kept pace with the game's patches since 2022, so the server can sit a version behind the current client. Groups who use it either roll their game back to the server's build through Steam or run version matching mods on both sides. If your group always plays the newest patch, peer to peer lobbies may suit you better.

The server itself is light. A four player lobby runs well on 4 GB, and 3 GB is enough for a pair. Pick 6 GB if you run a public lobby with lots of people joining and leaving, since the server runs through a compatibility layer that adds some overhead. Since runs never pile up saved data, memory stays flat from one night to the next. If the group grows past four through mods on every PC, give it more headroom.

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.
