Common problems

XP stops working when the Game Stats token expires or cheats are on. Make a new token at gamestats.sandstorm.game and paste it in the panel.

The default map and scenario must match. A Checkpoint scenario on a map that doesn't have it means the server won't load the level.

For a private server, add -Password=yourpassword to Additional Switches and restart.

Admins go in Insurgency/Config/Server/Admins.txt, one SteamID64 per line, then restart.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Modding your Insurgency: Sandstorm server

Sandstorm mods come from mod.io: custom maps, weapon packs, AI tweaks and full overhauls. Servers list mod IDs in Mods.txt and load them with -Mods, and the game also ships official mutators you can turn on.

Insurgency: Sandstorm server hosting, explained

Insurgency: Sandstorm is New World Interactive's hardcore tactical shooter on Unreal Engine. Bullets kill quickly, the HUD stays out of the way, and teams that talk win. Versus modes like Push, Firefight and Frontline put two teams against each other, and co-op scenarios like Checkpoint and Outpost send a squad of humans against AI. Our setup defaults to 28 players, and you set the cap with Max Players.

A community server lets you choose the scenario and map, run mods from mod.io and keep a home for your clan or co-op group. Two tokens matter here. The Steam server token (GSLT) we create for you automatically. The Game Stats token is yours to make: sign in with Steam at the official Sandstorm game stats site, make a token and paste it into the panel, and players earn XP on your server.

The panel holds the server name, max players, default map, scenario, query port, auto updates, the Game Stats token and Additional Switches for extra launch options like a password, mutators or a map cycle. Admins.txt, MapCycle.txt and Mods.txt live in the config folders you edit in the file manager. ISMCmod and custom map packs are popular with co-op groups who want harder AI and more realistic gear.

Sandstorm's server is heavier than older shooters, and AI in co-op adds to it. A co-op server for a squad of eight runs on 4 GB. A full versus server, or a server with a few mods, should start at 6 GB. Large mod sets with custom maps and AI overhauls are where 8 to 12 GB is worth it, since every mod is loaded into memory when the map starts.

Common questions

How many players can join an Insurgency: Sandstorm server?

Our default is 28 and you change it with Max Players. Co-op servers usually run fewer humans, often around eight, since the AI fills the other side.

Do players earn XP on a community Sandstorm server?

Yes, if the server has a valid Game Stats token and cheats are off. Tokens can expire, so if XP stops, make a new one at gamestats.sandstorm.game and paste it in.

Do I need to make a GSLT for my server?

No. We create the Steam server token (GSLT) for you. The Game Stats token is separate and is the only one you make yourself.

How do I add mods to my Sandstorm server?

Mods come from mod.io. List the mod IDs in Mods.txt in Insurgency/Config/Server, set up your mod.io access in the server config, and add -Mods through Additional Switches.

How do I join a Sandstorm server by IP?

Open the console and type open followed by the IP and port. For a passworded server, add ?Password= and the password to the end of the address.

How do I make myself admin?

Add your SteamID64 to Admins.txt in Insurgency/Config/Server and restart. You can then use admin commands in game.

Can I run co-op and versus on the same server?

Yes, the scenario decides it. Pick a co-op scenario like Checkpoint or a versus one like Push as the default, and use a map cycle to rotate.

Can console players join a PC server?

No. The PC version and the console versions of Sandstorm don't share servers.

Is GamezServers affiliated with Insurgency: Sandstorm?

No. You rent and control your own dedicated Insurgency: Sandstorm server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
