Common problems
Only four people can join? The stock server allows 4 clients. Raise Max Players in the panel, up to 16, and restart.
Lock the room: after claiming admin, /mastermode 2 locks the server so new players join as spectators, and /mastermode 3 makes it private.
Players get the wrong map version? Custom maps must be identical for everyone. Share the .ogz files before match night.
Server not responding
Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.
Use the server address
Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.
No port forwarding or firewall changes
Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.
Cube 2: Sauerbraten server hosting, explained
Cube 2: Sauerbraten is a free, open source arena shooter in the old school mold: fast movement, rocket jumps, instagib and capture the flag. Its other trick is coop edit, where several people sculpt a map together live, inside the game, while running around in it. The last release came out in 2020 and the community is small but loyal, with duel and clan scenes that still run cups and ladders.
Running your own server means matches on your terms. The panel sets the server description shown in the browser, the max player count up to 16, the master server it registers with, and an admin password that we generate for you. Claim admin in game with /setmaster and the password, then pick modes and maps, kick players and set the master mode to open, locked or private.
Coop edit is where a server really earns its keep. Your group can build a map together over several evenings, save it with /savemap and then play it. Community maps from Quadropolis work the same way: everyone needs the same .ogz files. Leave the main master server set to show up publicly, or point it elsewhere if you'd rather keep it to friends who connect directly.
Sauerbraten is tiny by modern standards. The server holds no persistent world and uses almost no memory with a full house, and the whole game is a small download for players. 1 GB is plenty for duels and small games, 2 GB covers a full 16 player CTF night, and 4 GB is only worth it for long coop edit sessions on big, detailed maps.

How many players can a Sauerbraten server have?
Up to 16, set with Max Players in the panel. The stock server defaults to 4 clients, so raise it for team and CTF games.
How do I become admin on my server?
Type /setmaster followed by the admin password from your panel. That gives you control over modes, maps, kicks and the master mode.
How do I make the server private?
Claim admin, then use /mastermode 3 to make it private. You can also change the master server in the panel so it doesn't show in the public browser.
Will my server show in the server browser?
Yes, as long as it registers with the master server set in the panel. The default is the main Sauerbraten master server.
Can we edit maps together on the server?
Yes. Switch to coop edit mode and everyone on the server can build the same map at once. Save it with /savemap when you're done.
Is Sauerbraten free?
Yes, it's free and open source for Windows, Mac and Linux, so anyone can download it and join.
What port does Sauerbraten use?
The game's default is 28785, but use the exact port shown in your panel when you connect.

Can my friends and I split the cost?
Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.
Can I pay once instead of a subscription?
Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.
