Wurm Unlimited Server Not Showing in the List: How to Fix It

Wurm Unlimited server missing from the Internet tab? Refresh, clear filters, open the query and Steam ports, match the beta branch and check the name.

When a Wurm Unlimited server does not appear in the launcher's Internet tab, first press Refresh and clear the server filters, since the list does not load on its own. If it shows under LAN but not Internet, the Steam query port (27016 UDP by default) or the Steam communication port is not reachable from outside. After that, check that players are on the same branch as the server (public or beta) and that the server finished starting. Friends you have already played with can also find it under History or Favorite.

How the Wurm Unlimited server list works

The Wurm Unlimited launcher has five tabs above the server list: Internet, LAN, Favorite, Friends and History. The Internet tab lists every public Wurm Unlimited server known to Steam. Steam finds out about your server by querying it on its query port, so the listing depends on Steam being able to reach that port from the internet.

Wurm Unlimited came out in 2015 and its community is small but steady, with players running everything from private villages to long lived public worlds. Fewer servers means a shorter list, which also makes a missing one easy to spot.

Fix 1: Refresh and clear the filters

Two things catch almost everyone:

  • The list does not fill itself. The Internet tab is active when the launcher opens, but you have to click Refresh at the bottom before servers appear.
  • Server Filter options hide servers. Under Server Filter in the lower right, "Remove password servers", "Remove empty servers" and "Remove full servers" can hide yours. A new private server is often both password protected and empty, so two filters hide it at once. The Name and Ping filters can also exclude it.

Clear the filters, refresh, and search by name.

Fix 2: LAN but not Internet means ports

Wurmpedia's own advice: if a server shows under LAN but not under Internet, ports need forwarding. Wurm Unlimited uses:

Port Protocol Purpose
3724 TCP Game connection (externalport)
27016 UDP Steam query (queryport), needed for the Internet list
8766 TCP and UDP Steam communication

Forward the query and Steam ports as well as the game port to the server, and allow them through the firewall. Never expose the RMI ports used for clustering (7220 and 7221) to the internet. Our port forwarding guide walks through routers, including carrier grade NAT, where forwarding cannot work.

If you changed the query port on the launch line (queryport=), forward that port instead. Running two servers on one machine needs different game and query ports for each.

Fix 3: Make sure it actually started

A headless server has a few moments where it looks alive but is not ready:

  • The server loads the whole world database before accepting connections. Big, old worlds take a while.
  • Wait for the startup to finish in the console before refreshing. On a dedicated install the console prints when the launcher has finished starting the server.
  • If startup stops with an error, read it. A broken map folder or a database left behind from a different world are the usual causes.

Fix 4: Match the branch

Wurm Unlimited has a public branch and a beta branch on Steam. A server on beta does not match clients on public, and the reverse. If a server was switched to beta (or back), every player must switch the client's branch the same way in Steam: right click Wurm Unlimited, Properties, Betas. Only use beta if your whole group has opted in.

Fix 5: The name and the world

  • A server's name defaults to "Heavenord" on the Adventure map and "New Creative Server" on the Creative map. Many servers never change it, so searching for the default finds lots of servers that are not yours. Give yours a unique name.
  • If the server suddenly appears with a different name or empty world, it may be loading a different world folder. Check which world it starts.

Fix 6: Joining without the Internet tab

While you fix the listing, players have other ways in:

  • History shows worlds they have visited before.
  • Favorite shows worlds they saved with right click, Add to favorites.
  • Friends shows worlds hosted by Steam friends.

For a first visit, the Internet tab is still the way in, so fixing the ports matters.

Fix 7: Listed, but players cannot log in

If players see the server but cannot get in:

  • Password. It is set on the server and asked for after clicking Connect.
  • Full. The Players column shows current and maximum players.
  • "You can not log on to this type of server". A world setting marks it as not a game server. See the Wurm Unlimited setup guide for the fix.

Quick diagnosis

What you see Most likely cause
Empty Internet list Not refreshed yet
Others listed, yours missing Filters, or ports closed
Shows under LAN, not Internet Query or Steam port not forwarded
Disappeared after switching branch Branch mismatch
Listed under a default name Name never changed, search for your own name
Listed but no login Password, full, or world setting

Wurm Unlimited landscape with a road and bridge

A server that is simply reachable

On a Wurm Unlimited server from GamezServers, the game and query ports are assigned and open, so fix 2 does not apply. Server Name, Server Password, World, Beta branch and Auto update are panel settings, the live console shows the startup finishing, and one click backups protect a world you have spent months terraforming. It has 25 player slots, which is plenty for most villages and communities. For GM power and custom maps, see the setup guide.

FAQ

Why is my Wurm Unlimited server not in the Internet tab?

The query or Steam port is not reachable, the list was not refreshed, or a filter hides it. If it shows under LAN but not Internet, forward the ports.

What port does Wurm Unlimited use for the server list?

The Steam query port, 27016 UDP by default. The game itself uses 3724 TCP.

Can players join a Wurm Unlimited server that is not listed?

Players who visited before can find it under History or Favorite. New players need it listed.

Do players need the beta branch to join a beta server?

Yes. Client and server must be on the same Steam branch.
