Vintage Story server commands are typed with a slash in game chat or in the server console. Make yourself admin with /op YourName from the console, then manage players with /player Name whitelist on, /player Name role suplayer, /kick and /ban, change live settings with /serverconfig, and handle the world with /time, /weather, /tp and /genbackup. Type /help in game to see what your role can use, since commands change between versions.

How do roles work?
Every player on a Vintage Story server has one role, and the role decides which privileges they have. New players get the role set by DefaultRoleCode in serverconfig.json, which is suplayer by default.
| Role | Who it is for |
|---|---|
suvisitor |
A guest who can look but has very limited rights |
suplayer |
A normal survival player. The default |
crplayer |
A player allowed into creative mode |
sumod |
A survival moderator |
crmod |
A creative moderator |
admin |
Full control of the server |
/op Name is simply a shortcut for /player Name role admin. Run /list role to see the roles on your server and /list privileges to see every privilege that exists. Roles and their privileges are stored under Roles in serverconfig.json, so you can also edit them there with the server stopped.
Which commands manage players?
[playername] can be a plain name, or a selector: s[] is you, o[] is every online player, and a[] is everyone who has ever joined. Selectors take filters, for example o[role=suplayer].
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/op Name |
Makes a player admin |
/player Name whitelist on |
Adds a player to the whitelist |
/player Name whitelist off |
Removes them |
/player Name role sumod |
Changes a player's role |
/player Name privilege grant build |
Gives one privilege without changing the role |
/player Name privilege revoke build |
Takes it away |
/player Name gamemode survival |
Sets their game mode |
/player Name clearinv |
Empties their inventory |
/player Name allowcharselonce |
Lets them pick their class again |
/player Name landclaimallowance 50000 |
Gives extra land claim volume |
/kick Name reason |
Kicks a player |
/ban Name reason |
Bans a player |
/unban Name |
Lifts a ban |
/list clients |
Who is online |
/list banned |
Who is banned |
The whitelist is the command new hosts need first. Dedicated servers whitelist by default, so a friend who connects before you add them is turned away. Add everyone in your group with /player Name whitelist on before you share the address. /player Name allowcharselonce is the polite fix when someone regrets their class choice on day one.
Which /serverconfig settings can I change live?
/serverconfig changes settings in serverconfig.json while the server runs, so you do not need a restart or an editor.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/serverconfig whitelistmode on |
Whitelist on. off opens the server, default means on for dedicated servers |
/serverconfig password secret |
Sets a join password (no spaces) |
/serverconfig nopassword |
Removes the password |
/serverconfig maxclients 12 |
Player cap |
/serverconfig allowpvp false |
Turns player combat off |
/serverconfig allowfirespread false |
Stops fire spreading |
/serverconfig passtimewhenempty false |
Stops the clock when nobody is online |
/serverconfig setspawnhere |
Moves the default spawn to where you stand |
/serverconfig entityspawning false |
Stops creatures spawning |
/serverconfig tickrate 20 |
Server tick rate, from 10 to 100 |
passtimewhenempty is the setting groups ask about most. With it on, seasons keep moving while everyone is away: crops ripen, food spoils and winter can arrive while nobody is online. Some groups love that, others come back to a dead farm. Turn it off if your group plays a few evenings a week and wants the world to wait.

Which commands control time and weather?
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/time |
Shows the in game time |
/time set morning |
Sets the time. Also day, sunset, night, midnight, or an hour like 8 |
/time setmonth may |
Jumps the calendar to a month |
/time speed 60 |
Game time speed (60 is the default) |
/time calendarspeedmul 0.5 |
Overall calendar speed (0.5 is the default) |
/time stop and /time resume |
Freezes and restarts time |
/weather |
Shows and changes the weather |
/nexttempstorm |
Days until the next temporal storm |
The wiki warns that changing time often can have side effects, so take a backup before you experiment. Jumping months in particular affects crops, animals and spoilage. calendarspeedmul changes how long the year lasts for good, which is the real fix if your group thinks seasons pass too fast or too slow.
Which commands help with teleporting and building?
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/tp x y z |
Teleport to coordinates shown in the game's coordinate box |
/tp Name |
Teleport to a player |
/tp Name x y z |
Teleport a player |
/tpwp name |
Teleport to one of your waypoints |
/gamemode creative |
Switch yourself to creative. /gm is the short form |
/giveitem code quantity Name |
Gives an item |
/giveblock code quantity Name |
Gives a block |
/land adminfree |
Removes the land claim you are standing in |
/announce message |
Message to every chat group |
Use /gm spectator to watch a reported griefer without being seen, then switch back with /gm survival. On public servers, /land adminfree clears claims left by players who quit, and /role suplayer landclaimallowance sets how much land each normal player can claim.
Which commands keep the server healthy?
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/stats |
Tick rate, memory use and other server statistics |
/autosavenow |
Saves the world immediately |
/genbackup |
Copies the current save into the backups folder without stopping the server |
/stop |
Saves and shuts down the server |
Run /genbackup before updating mods or the game version. Big content mods can break an old world after an update, and a backup made a minute earlier is the difference between a shrug and a lost settlement. /stats is the first thing to check if players report lag: a falling tick rate points at the server, not their connection.
Running these commands on a hosted server
On a Vintage Story server from GamezServers, the panel's live console is the server console, so /op, /player Name whitelist on and /stop work there without joining the game. serverconfig.json is in the browser file manager for anything you prefer to edit by hand, one click backups sit alongside /genbackup, and you pick the exact game version in the panel so it matches your group. Your settlement can split the bill. For first time setup, see our Vintage Story hosting guide, and for mods, our guide to installing mods on a Vintage Story server.
