UPnP Not Working for a Game Server? Why It Fails and What to Do
Why UPnP fails to open game server ports (CGNAT, double NAT, disabled on the router, servers that never ask) and how to check and replace it with a manual rule.

UPnP usually fails for a game server for one of five reasons: the router has UPnP turned off, there is a second router or carrier NAT in front of yours, the dedicated server software never asks for a port at all, Windows blocks the discovery traffic, or the router accepted the request but the mapping expired or clashed with another device. In most cases the reliable fix is to stop depending on UPnP and add a manual port forwarding rule for the server PC.
What UPnP does for a game server
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play), and its cousins NAT-PMP and PCP, let a program on your network ask the router to open a port automatically. A program that supports it says "please forward UDP 2456 to me", and the router creates a temporary rule. When it works, you never touch the router.
Three things have to be true:
- The program has to support UPnP and actually request the mapping.
- The router directly above the PC has to have UPnP on and accept the request.
- That router has to be the one with the public IP.
If any of these breaks, nothing opens, and often nothing tells you why.
Reason 1: the server never asks
This is the most overlooked one. Many games use UPnP for their client or for listen servers (hosting from inside the game), but their dedicated server program does not. Steam dedicated servers for survival games, the vanilla Minecraft Java server jar, and most Linux server builds simply bind a port and wait. No UPnP request is ever sent.
How to tell: open your router's UPnP status page (many list active mappings) while the server is running. If your port is not there, the server did not ask.
Router pages that list UPnP mappings:
- Netgear: ADVANCED, Advanced Setup, UPnP, the Portmap Table.
- ASUS: System Log, then Port Forwarding (shows UPnP entries).
- TP-Link: Advanced, NAT Forwarding, UPnP, the service list.
Reason 2: UPnP is off on the router
Many ISP gateways and security minded routers ship with UPnP off, and some mesh systems hide the toggle. Common locations:
| Router | Where |
|---|---|
| ASUS | WAN, Internet Connection, Enable UPnP |
| Netgear | ADVANCED, Advanced Setup, UPnP |
| TP-Link Deco | More, Advanced, UPnP |
| eero | Settings, Network settings, UPnP |
| Google Nest Wifi | Wi-Fi settings, Advanced networking, UPnP |
| AT&T BGW320 | Firewall, Firewall Advanced, UPnP |
Turn it on, restart the game server, and check the mapping table again.
Reason 3: another NAT in front of you
UPnP only talks to the router directly above your PC. If that router sits behind an ISP router (double NAT) or behind carrier grade NAT, the mapping is created on your router but the outer device still drops incoming traffic. Your game may even report "UPnP successful" and still be unreachable.
Check your router's WAN IP. If it is a private address or in 100.64.x.x to 100.127.x.x, UPnP cannot help. See double NAT fix and how to tell if you are behind CGNAT.
Reason 4: Windows blocks discovery
UPnP starts with a discovery broadcast on UDP 1900 (SSDP). If Windows considers your network Public, network discovery is off and some programs cannot find the router.
- Open Settings, Network & internet, then your connection (Ethernet or Wi-Fi).
- Set Network profile type to Private network.
- Restart the game server.
Third party firewalls in antivirus suites can also block SSDP. If you use one, check its rules for UDP 1900.
Reason 5: conflicts and expiry
- Another device already took the port. If a console or second PC grabbed UDP 27015 through UPnP, your server's request for the same port is refused. Most routers do not tell you.
- Mappings expire. UPnP rules have a lease time. If the router reboots or the lease runs out and the server does not renew it, the port closes while the server keeps running.
- Buggy router firmware. Some ISP gateways accept UPnP requests and then quietly ignore them. Update firmware, or move on.
The real fix: a manual rule
A manual port forward does the same job, does not expire, and works for servers that never speak UPnP.
- Give the server PC a fixed local IP with a DHCP reservation.
- Add a forward for the game's port and protocol to that IP.
- Allow the server in the PC's firewall: Windows Firewall rules for a game server.
Our port forwarding guide has the ports for every game we host, and there are router specific walkthroughs for ASUS, Netgear Nighthawk, eero and others.
If you cannot change router settings at all, a tunnel such as playit.gg does not need UPnP or forwarding.
Should you leave UPnP on
UPnP lets any program on your network open ports without asking you, including malware. That is why many people turn it off. A sensible middle ground: leave it on if you have consoles that need it for online play, and use manual rules for anything you host. If nobody in the house needs it, turning it off and forwarding by hand is tidier.

Skip the router question
UPnP exists to save you from router menus. A hosted server saves you from them entirely: the server has its own public address and the game's ports are open from the start. GamezServers servers come with a control panel, live console and one click backups, and you can rent a game server without any contract.
FAQ
Does Minecraft use UPnP?
The vanilla Minecraft Java server does not open ports with UPnP. "Open to LAN" does not either. You need a manual forward, a tunnel, or a hosted server.
Is UPnP a security risk?
It can be, because any program on your network can open ports without permission. The risk is moderate on a home network with trusted devices, and higher if any device is infected.
My game says UPnP succeeded but friends cannot join. Why?
Your router accepted the mapping but there is another NAT layer in front of it, either a second router or your ISP's carrier NAT.
Does NAT-PMP work better than UPnP?
It is a simpler protocol supported by some routers, mainly Apple's old AirPort line and many open source firmwares, but it has the same limits: it only works when the program uses it and your router has the public IP.
