How much a Rust server costs per month in 2026, what drives the price, the real cost of self hosting, and how to split a Rust server with your group.

A Rust server costs about 20 to 40 USD a month in 2026 for most community and friend servers, depending on map size, players and plugins. On GamezServers it is 19.99 USD for 8 GB, 29.99 USD for 12 GB and 39.99 USD for 16 GB. Self hosting is free software but costs electricity, hardware and time.

Why does a Rust server cost more than other games?

Rust is one of the heaviest games to host because of three things:

  • Memory grows through the wipe. Every wall, box, door and deployable is an entity. A fresh map might use 5 or 6 GB, but by the end of a busy wipe the same server can need twice that. Plugins add more on top.
  • Big maps and big populations. A 4000 size map with 100 players is a lot of simulation, AI and networking for one machine.
  • It must stay online. Rust has no co-op or listen server mode, so every multiplayer world runs on a dedicated server that is up whenever anyone wants to play.

That is why cheap 4 GB plans that work for Minecraft or Terraria rarely work for Rust past the first day of a wipe.

How much does a Rust server cost per month?

Here are our real Rust plans. Prices are in USD per month, and the right plan depends on map size and player count, not just slots.

Plan RAM vCPU Players Price a month Good for
Starter 8 GB 2 up to 50 19.99 USD Small map around 3000, friend groups, light plugins
Standard (popular) 12 GB 3 up to 100 29.99 USD Standard 4000 map with plugins, community servers
Pro 16 GB 4 up to 200 39.99 USD Large or custom maps, heavy plugin packs, 100+ players

New customers get 50% off the first month, so Standard starts at about 15 USD. Yearly billing costs the same as 10 months if one person pays. You can cancel any time from your dashboard, and backups, DDoS protection and 24/7 support come with every plan.

Which Rust plan size do I need?

Match RAM to map size and your peak population, then leave headroom for the end of the wipe.

Your server Map size Recommended RAM
2 to 10 friends, vanilla 2500 to 3000 8 GB
20 to 50 players, a few plugins 3000 to 3500 8 to 12 GB
Community server, 50 to 100 players 3500 to 4500 12 GB
100 to 200 players, custom map or big plugin pack 4500+ 16 GB

If you are unsure, start smaller and move up when RAM gets tight in the second or third week. Upgrades are prorated and apply on restart. Our guide to how much RAM a game server needs explains the reasoning, and how to change Rust map size and seed shows how size affects memory.

How much does a Rust server cost per player?

Split between a group, a Rust server is cheap. On GamezServers you can split the bill with up to 10 people, and each share adds a 1 USD fee.

Plan Split 4 ways Split 6 ways Split 10 ways
Starter (19.99 USD) about 6.00 USD each about 4.33 USD each about 3.00 USD each
Standard (29.99 USD) about 8.50 USD each about 6.00 USD each about 4.00 USD each
Pro (39.99 USD) about 11.00 USD each about 7.67 USD each about 5.00 USD each

Each friend gets their own payment link, and when someone drops out the remaining shares adjust, never above the full price. Read how to split the cost of a game server with friends for how it works.

Can you host a Rust server for free?

Yes, if you have a spare PC. The Rust dedicated server (RustDedicated, Steam app 258550) is free to download through SteamCMD and runs on Windows and Linux. The real costs are:

  • Hardware. You need a PC with at least 8 GB of RAM to spare for the server alone, more for bigger maps, plus a fast CPU. Playing on the same machine needs even more.
  • Electricity. A PC running around the clock adds up. A machine drawing 150 W uses about 108 kWh a month. At 0.15 USD per kWh that is roughly 16 USD a month, and at 0.30 USD per kWh, common in parts of Europe, it is about 32 USD.
  • Upload bandwidth. Each player needs steady upload from your connection. A busy server can saturate a home line.
  • Port forwarding. You need to open the game and query ports on your router, which is impossible on some connections that use CGNAT.
  • Your time. Force wipe day means updating Rust, updating Oxide or Carbon, wiping files and restarting every month at 2 PM Eastern.
  • Your home IP. Every player sees it, and Rust servers are a common target for DDoS attacks.

Free game server hosts do exist, but almost all of them focus on small Minecraft servers. Rust's memory needs make free Rust hosting rare, and the ones that exist tend to have tiny RAM limits, queues or auto shutdowns that do not suit a persistent survival world. Our free vs paid hosting comparison covers this in more depth, and how to make a Rust server walks through self hosting if you want to try.

Is cheap Rust server hosting worth it?

Cheap is fine as long as the RAM is real. Watch for these traps when comparing prices:

  • Slot based pricing with tiny RAM. "100 slots" means little if the plan has 4 GB. The server will crash or lag once bases go up.
  • Hidden extra fees for Oxide, Carbon, custom maps or daily backups.
  • Long contracts. Rust communities change month to month. Monthly billing with a cancel button is safer.
  • No DDoS protection. Popular Rust servers get attacked. It should be included, not an add on.

A fair price for a solid community Rust server is around 30 USD a month for 12 GB. Below 15 USD for a public server usually means something is missing.

What do you get with GamezServers?

  • Vanilla, Oxide or Carbon chosen at checkout, and switchable later.
  • Rust and your framework update automatically on every restart, which makes force wipe day a restart and a file delete.
  • A file manager for wipes and configs, SFTP for bulk uploads, and one click buttons for saves, broadcasts, kicks, bans and admin.
  • 3 backups, DDoS protection and 24/7 support.
  • Monthly billing with 50% off the first month for new customers, bill splitting for up to 10 friends and no contract.

FAQ

How much RAM does a Rust server need?

8 GB suits a small map with a friend group, 12 GB a standard 4000 map with up to 100 players, and 16 GB large or custom maps and heavy plugin packs.

What is the cheapest way to run a Rust server?

Running the free dedicated server on a spare PC is cheapest in money, but you pay in electricity and setup time. For an always online server, splitting a hosted plan between friends is often 4 to 8 USD each a month.

Is the Rust dedicated server free?

Yes. RustDedicated is free through SteamCMD as app 258550, and you do not need to own Rust on the account that downloads it. Players still need to own Rust to join.

Do Oxide or Carbon cost extra?

Not with us. Pick vanilla, Oxide or Carbon at checkout at the same price, and switch later from the panel.

Can I upgrade my Rust plan mid wipe?

Yes. Move to a bigger plan from Settings at any time. The change is prorated and the new RAM applies after a restart, without losing the map.

Skip the setup. Your own Rust server.
