You do not need a credit card to rent a game server. A normal bank debit card works almost everywhere, and so do Apple Pay and Google Pay. Teen debit cards and reloadable prepaid cards usually work too, as long as they are enabled for online payments and registered with a billing address. Gift cards are the least reliable, especially for renewing subscriptions, so use them with a one off prepaid rental if at all.

Here is what each payment option needs, why some cards get declined, and the cleanest setups for teens and students.

What works, ranked by reliability

Payment method One off payment Monthly subscription Notes
Bank debit card Yes Yes Same as a credit card for checkout
Apple Pay or Google Pay Yes Yes Uses a card already in your wallet
Teen debit card from a bank or app Usually Usually Online and recurring payments may need a parent to switch them on
Reloadable prepaid card (registered) Usually Sometimes Must have your name and address registered
Gift card (Visa or Mastercard) Sometimes Rarely Often declined for recurring charges
PayPal, crypto, Steam Wallet Depends on host Depends on host Many game hosts only take cards

Debit cards

A debit card from your bank goes through the same checkout as a credit card. The money comes straight out of your account. If one gets declined:

  1. Check the card is enabled for online and international payments in your banking app. Some banks turn these off by default, and a host's payment processor may be based in another country.
  2. Check you have enough balance for the full charge.
  3. Look for a "was this you?" notification from your bank and approve it.
  4. Make sure the billing postal code you entered matches the one your bank has.

Apple Pay and Google Pay

If your phone already has a card in its wallet, Apple Pay or Google Pay at checkout is the easiest route. It uses that card underneath, so the same rules apply, but you skip typing card numbers. The option only shows on supported devices and browsers: Safari on Apple devices for Apple Pay, Chrome or Android for Google Pay.

Teen debit cards

Many banks and apps offer debit cards for under 18s controlled by a parent. They work for game servers if:

  • Online purchases are allowed in the parent's controls.
  • The merchant category is not blocked. Some parental controls block gaming or digital services.
  • Recurring payments are allowed if you want a subscription.

If a subscription keeps failing, try a prepaid rental instead, since one off payments are less likely to be blocked.

Prepaid cards and gift cards

Reloadable prepaid cards with your name on them often work like a debit card once registered. Gift cards are trickier:

  • They may have no billing address, so address checks fail. Many can be registered online with a postal code, which helps.
  • Recurring charges are often refused, so a monthly subscription fails at the first renewal even if checkout worked.
  • The balance has to cover the whole charge. Split payments across two gift cards are rarely possible.

If a gift card is all you have, use it on a single prepaid period that covers your plans. See prepaid vs subscription for how prepaid servers work.

When a parent pays

For players under 18, the simplest setup is often a parent paying, either on their card for a subscription or a one off prepaid period. A few tips that make parents comfortable:

  • Show them the exact monthly price and what renews.
  • Choose prepaid if they want a hard spending cap with no surprise charges.
  • Put the server in the parent's account, so they get the receipts and can cancel.
  • Set a password or whitelist so only your friends can join. See how to make a game server private.

When a friend has a card and you do not

Groups often have one person with a card. Two ways to handle it:

  1. That friend pays, everyone else pays them back in cash or through a payment app. Simple, but someone always forgets. Our guide on how to split the cost of a game server with friends covers the pitfalls.
  2. Split billing, where each friend who has a card pays their own share directly. Friends without cards can pay a carded friend back for their part.

What usually does not work

  • Steam Wallet funds cannot be spent outside Steam.
  • Console store credit (Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo) is locked to those stores. Minecraft Realms is the exception for Minecraft players: it can be bought through console stores. Compare it in Minecraft Realms vs a dedicated server.
  • Bank transfers are rarely offered by game hosts for small monthly amounts.

Paying on GamezServers

GamezServers checkout runs through Stripe and accepts major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The options you see depend on your device and browser. You can pick a Subscription that renews or Prepaid time from 3 days to a year that never renews, which suits prepaid and teen cards. With Split with friends, up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, without needing an account. There are no setup fees, and new customers get 50% off the first month on a subscription. Start from the games page or read the billing docs.

FAQ

Can I pay for a game server with a debit card?

Yes. Debit cards work the same as credit cards at checkout on almost every host.

Why does my prepaid card get declined for a subscription?

Many prepaid and gift cards block recurring charges or have no registered billing address. Register the card online, or use a one off prepaid period.

Can I pay for a Minecraft server with PayPal?

Only on hosts that support it. Many game hosts accept cards and phone wallets only. Check the checkout page before you sign up.

Can a 13 year old rent a game server?

Most hosts require an adult account holder or parental permission. The easy route is a parent paying and owning the account, with the teen running the server.
