To move a V Rising server to a new host, stop the old server and download two folders from its data folder (save-data when started with -persistentDataPath save-data): the world in Saves/v4/<SaveName>/ and the Settings folder with ServerHostSettings.json, ServerGameSettings.json, adminlist.txt and banlist.txt. Upload both to the same places on the new server, set SaveName to the exact folder name, and leave GameSettingsPreset empty if you used custom rules, or your copied rules are ignored.
What you can and cannot move
| Thing | Moves to the new server? |
|---|---|
| Castles, servants, chests, the map, V Blood progress | Yes, the save folder in Saves/v4/ |
| Players' characters, gear, spells and clans | Yes. They are stored in the server's save, not on players' PCs |
| Custom rules: PvP or PvE, clan size, raid windows, blood drain, rates | Yes, ServerGameSettings.json |
| Name, password, slots, save name, autosave settings | Yes, ServerHostSettings.json, though many hosts set these in their panel |
| Admins and bans | Yes, adminlist.txt and banlist.txt |
| BepInEx plugins and their configs | Yes, onto a server that runs BepInEx, with plugin builds for the same game version |
| A PS5 server world | No. There is no access to console server files |

The data folder is whatever -persistentDataPath points to, usually save-data next to VRisingServer.exe. A Windows server started without that option keeps it in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Stunlock Studios\VRisingServer\.

Before you start
- Stop the old server. It autosaves every 120 seconds by default and on shutdown. Stop it so the newest autosave is complete.
- Match the version. Both servers must run the same V Rising version. Players on a different version cannot join.
- Note the old settings. Open
ServerHostSettings.jsonon the old host and write downSaveName,GameSettingsPreset,GameDifficultyPreset,PasswordandMaxConnectedUsers. - List the plugins. If the old server ran BepInEx, note each plugin and version.
Step 1: Download from the old host
Use the host's backup download, its file manager's zip option, or SFTP with FileZilla or WinSCP. Download the whole data folder if you can. A save folder holds many AutoSave_N folders, which add up on long running worlds, so zipping before you download saves time.
Step 2: Pick the save folder
Open Saves/v4/. Each folder there is one world, named after its SaveName. Take the one the old server loaded, with all its AutoSave folders and the JSON files beside them. The server loads the newest autosave itself, so you do not need to choose one.
Step 3: Upload to the new server
Stop the new server, then:
- Upload the save folder into
Saves/v4/in the new data folder. - Upload
ServerGameSettings.json,adminlist.txtandbanlist.txtintoSettings/. - Set the new server's
SaveNameto the exact folder name. If nothing matches, the server starts a brand new world under that name and your castles sit unused beside it.
Step 4: Clear the preset, or your rules are ignored
This is the trap that catches most moves. GameSettingsPreset in ServerHostSettings.json loads a ready made rule set such as StandardPvP, and it wins over ServerGameSettings.json. Many hosts set a preset by default. If your old server used custom rules and the new one has a preset set, your clan size, raid windows and rates silently fall back to the preset's values.
So:
- Old server used custom rules: leave
GameSettingsPresetempty and upload yourServerGameSettings.json. - Old server used a preset: set the same preset name on the new server.
Set GameDifficultyPreset the same way. Stunlock's dedicated server instructions explain how the files and presets combine.
Step 5: Start and check
Start the server and watch the log until it reports that startup completed. Join, check your castle heart and a servant coffin, then enable the console under Options > General and type adminauth to confirm admin works. Then send players the new address. Stunlock also has a short guide to transferring saves to a new host.
Common problems
- Brand new world:
SaveNamedoes not match the folder name, or the folder went intoSaves/instead ofSaves/v4/. - Castles there but rules are wrong: a
GameSettingsPresetis set and overrides yourServerGameSettings.json. Clear it and restart. adminauthdoes nothing:adminlist.txtis not in the newSettingsfolder, has extra text on a line, or the server was not restarted.- Server will not start after the move: a BepInEx plugin is built for another game version, or a plugin it depends on is missing.
- Players cannot join, version mismatch: the new server runs a different V Rising version.
Moving to GamezServers
On a V Rising server from GamezServers, the data folder is save-data. Click Backup, stop the server, and upload your save into save-data/Saves/v4/ and your files into save-data/Settings/ from the Files tab or over SFTP (login in Settings). The file manager can extract a zip or download one straight from a link. Save Name, Game Settings Preset and Game Difficulty Preset are panel settings: set Save Name to your folder name and clear the preset for custom rules. Pick the V Rising BepInEx type if you run plugins. Then your castle keeps its blood without anyone's PC. For the rules themselves, see V Rising server settings explained.
FAQ
Where are V Rising server saves stored?
In Saves/v4/<SaveName>/ inside the data folder set by -persistentDataPath, usually save-data next to the server.
Will players keep their characters?
Yes. Characters, gear and clans are saved in the server's world, so they come with the save folder.
Why are my server rules different after moving?
A GameSettingsPreset is set on the new server and overrides ServerGameSettings.json. Clear it, or set the preset you used before.
Do I need adminlist.txt?
Only to keep your admins. It lists SteamID64s, one per line, in the Settings folder.
