How to Install Mods on a Mordhau Server (mod.io and Mod Maps)
Install mod.io mods on a Mordhau server: a Mods= line per numeric ID in Game.ini, mod maps in MapRotation by map name, and why the default map stays stock.

On this page
To install mods on a Mordhau server, find each mod's numeric ID on its mod.io page and add one Mods=<ID> line per mod under [/Script/Mordhau.MordhauGameSession] in the server's Game.ini (in Mordhau/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/ or WindowsServer/), with the server stopped. Restart, and the server downloads the mods from mod.io. Players download them automatically when they join. Mod maps then go in MapRotation= lines by their map name, such as FFA_Cistern.
What you are working with
| Thing | What it is | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Mod ID | The numeric ID shown on the mod's mod.io page | Mods= in Game.ini |
[/Script/Mordhau.MordhauGameSession] |
The section that holds server name, passwords, admins and mods | Game.ini |
[/Script/Mordhau.MordhauGameMode] |
The section that holds MapRotation |
Game.ini |
| Map name | The level name a map mod uses, like FFA_Cistern |
MapRotation= and changelevel |
| Default Map (panel) | The map the server boots into | Panel setting, stock maps only |
What you can run
| Content | Works on a community server? |
|---|---|
| Map mods from mod.io | Yes, by map name in the rotation |
| Gameplay, weapon and cosmetic mods from mod.io | Yes, players download them on join |
| Server side tools from mod.io (admin and chat tools) | Yes, follow each mod's own config notes |
| Mods from outside mod.io | No. Mordhau servers fetch mods from mod.io |
| Mods made for an older Mordhau build | Sometimes broken after a patch. Check the mod page |

Where Game.ini lives
| Server type | Path |
|---|---|
| Native Linux server (our default type) | Mordhau/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Game.ini |
| Windows server build | Mordhau/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/Game.ini |
The file is created on the first start. Our panel offers both types: if you switch type, copy your Mods= lines into the other folder's Game.ini.
Before you start
- Stop the server. Edits made while it runs can be lost, and mods may fail to load.
- Back up
Game.ini. A line in the wrong section is easy to make and easy to undo with a copy. - Check each mod is current. Look at the mod.io page for recent updates and compatibility comments.
Step 1: Get the numeric mod ID
Open the mod on mordhau.mod.io. The page shows a numeric ID (labelled Resource ID or ID). Copy that number. The text in the page address, like /m/some-map-name, is not the ID and will not work.
Step 2: Add Mods= lines to Game.ini
Find [/Script/Mordhau.MordhauGameSession] and add one line per mod, with no commas or spaces:
[/Script/Mordhau.MordhauGameSession]
ServerName=My Mordhau Server
MaxSlots=48
Mods=71385
Mods=123456
The numbers are examples. The lines must be inside this section, below its header and above the next [...] header. Anywhere else, the server ignores them and never downloads the mods.
Step 3: Add mod maps to the rotation
Under [/Script/Mordhau.MordhauGameMode], add a MapRotation= line for each map, using the map name the mod's page gives:
[/Script/Mordhau.MordhauGameMode]
MapRotation=FL_Grad
MapRotation=FFA_Cistern
MapRotation=SKM_Contraband
Only the level name goes here, no folder paths. The prefix tells you the mode, like FFA_ for free for all or SKM_ for skirmish. If the mod page does not list the map name, ask in its comments: guessing does not work.
Step 4: Restart and test
Start the server. It downloads the mods from mod.io before the first map, which can take a while for big map packs. Join, log in with adminlogin <password> in the console (backtick key), and switch to a mod map to test it:
changelevel FFA_Cistern
The gotcha: the Default Map is for stock maps
On our panel, the Default Map setting is added to the end of /Game/Mordhau/Maps/, the folder where Mordhau's own maps live. That is why it takes values like Grad/FL_Grad. Mod maps do not live in that folder, so a mod map typed into Default Map points at a path that does not exist and fails to load.
Keep a stock map such as Grad/FL_Grad or Contraband/FFA_Contraband as the default, and put mod maps in MapRotation. The server boots into the stock map and moves into your mod maps from the rotation, or immediately with changelevel. For a server that is all mod maps, keep the stock default short, like a small FFA map, and let the rotation take over after the first round.
Common problems
- Mods never download: the
Mods=lines are outside[/Script/Mordhau.MordhauGameSession], or you used the text name instead of the numeric ID. - Server fails to load its first map: a mod map was put in Default Map. Set a stock map and use
MapRotation. - Mod map missing from the rotation: the
MapRotation=line uses the mod's title or a path instead of the level name. - Players stuck downloading: large mod lists take time on first join. Trim mods nobody uses.
- Mod broke after a Mordhau patch: the mod needs an update from its author. Remove its line until it is fixed.
- A mod misbehaves on the Linux server: switch to the Windows server type in the panel and copy
Game.iniover.
Mods on GamezServers
On a Mordhau server from GamezServers, Game.ini opens in the browser file manager or over the SFTP login in Settings, and the file manager also handles zips and can download a file from a link straight to the server. Click Backup before a big mod change, switch between the Linux and Windows server types in the panel, and the server stays up for your clan without anyone's PC on. For admins and ports, see how to host a Mordhau server.
FAQ
Where do I put mods on a Mordhau server?
As Mods=<ID> lines under [/Script/Mordhau.MordhauGameSession] in Game.ini, one line per mod, then restart.
Do players need to download Mordhau mods themselves?
No. Players download the server's mods automatically when they join.
How do I add a mod map to the rotation?
Add its mod ID as a Mods= line, then a MapRotation= line with the map's level name, like FFA_Cistern.
Why does my server not start on a mod map?
On our panel the Default Map is for stock maps. Keep a stock default and load mod maps from MapRotation or with changelevel.
