How to Host a Squad 44 (Post Scriptum) Dedicated Server

Host a Squad 44 server, formerly Post Scriptum: SteamCMD app 746200, the PostScriptum ServerConfig files, ports 10027, 10037 and 21114, and seeding.

To host a Squad 44 server, install the dedicated server with SteamCMD using app ID 746200, edit Server.cfg, MapRotation.cfg and Admins.cfg in PostScriptum/ServerConfig, then start PostScriptumServer with your game, query and RCON ports. The defaults are 10027 UDP for the game, 10037 UDP for the Steam query and 21114 TCP for RCON. Squad 44 is the new name for Post Scriptum since Offworld Industries took it over, and the server files still use the old PostScriptum names everywhere. That is normal.

A full 80 player WW2 battle with tanks and artillery is a heavy server, so plan for 8 GB of RAM for a 40 player seed server and 12 GB or more for a full one.

Be realistic about the player count first

Squad 44 has a loyal community but it is not a huge game. Most nights only a handful of servers are full, and almost all of them belong to clans that seed them with their own members. A new public server with no group behind it usually sits empty. A server makes sense when you have a clan, an event group or a mod community that will fill the first 20 to 30 slots, after which public players join a live game. Keep that in mind when you pick a size.

What you need

  • A machine with a strong single core and plenty of RAM. Large Unreal Engine battle servers lean on one core more than on many.
  • Around 20 GB of disk for the server, more with Workshop mods.
  • SteamCMD. The server downloads anonymously.
  • A public IP with the ports below open. Home connections struggle with 80 players, so most clan servers run in a data center.

Install with SteamCMD

steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/steam/squad44 +login anonymous +app_update 746200 validate +quit

On Windows use a folder path like C:\squad44. Run the same line after every game patch, since players on a newer build cannot join an old server. The installed tree has a PostScriptum folder containing Binaries, ServerConfig and later Plugins/Mods.

The ServerConfig files

Everything lives in PostScriptum/ServerConfig/:

File What it holds
Server.cfg Name, slots, reserved slots, team rules, advertising, demos
MapRotation.cfg The list of layers the server plays, one per line
Admins.cfg Admin groups, their permissions and who is in them
Bans.cfg Banned players
Motd.cfg Message shown when players join
ServerMessages.cfg Messages broadcast on a timer

Write Server.cfg

The lines you will touch most:

ServerName="[TAG] Clan Server | Friendly Newcomers"
ShouldAdvertise=true
MaxPlayers=80
NumReservedSlots=4
AllowTeamChanges=true
PreventTeamChangeIfUnbalanced=true
NumPlayersDiffForTeamChanges=3
RecordDemos=false
TKAutoKickEnabled=true
ServerPassword=
  • ShouldAdvertise=true lists the server in the browser. Set it false for a hidden practice server.
  • NumReservedSlots keeps slots free for anyone in an Admins.cfg group with the reserve permission. On a full server, members still get in.
  • PreventTeamChangeIfUnbalanced and NumPlayersDiffForTeamChanges stop the whole lobby stacking onto one side.
  • ServerPassword makes the server private. Leave it empty for public.
  • RecordDemos saves demos of matches. Useful for reviewing events, costs disk.

Set up the rotation

MapRotation.cfg is a plain list of layers, one per line. A layer is a map plus a mode and side setup, for example an Offensive, RAAS, Armoured or Supremacy variant of Carentan, Arnhem, Doorwerth or Haguenau. The server ships with a full default rotation; the safest way to build your own is to copy lines from that file and delete the ones you do not want, because the layer names have to be exact. A typo stops that line from loading.

In game, an admin can type AdminChangeMap in the console and use tab completion to see every valid layer name, which is also a handy way to check spelling.

Start the server

Linux:

./PostScriptum/Binaries/Linux/PostScriptumServer Port=10027 QueryPort=10037 -RCONPORT=21114 -RCONPASSWORD=yourpassword -log

Windows uses PostScriptumServer.exe in PostScriptum\Binaries\Win64 with the same arguments. Without -RCONPASSWORD RCON is off, which is fine if you only admin from inside the game.

Open the ports

Port Protocol Purpose
10027 UDP Game traffic
10037 UDP Steam query, how the browser finds you
21114 TCP RCON, only if you admin remotely

A second server on the same IP needs a different game and query port, for example 10028 and 10038.

Make yourself admin

Add your SteamID64 to Admins.cfg with a group that has the permissions you need, then restart:

Group=Owner:changemap,pause,cheat,private,balance,chat,kick,ban,config,cameraman,immune,manageserver,reserve,demos,teamchange,forceteamchange,canseeadminchat
Admin=76561198000000000:Owner // you

Then open the console in game with the backtick or tilde key and run admin commands. Groups, permissions and the full command list are in how to add admins to a Squad 44 server.

Seeding: the part nobody warns you about

A server with 0 players does not attract players. Clans handle this by seeding: a group of members join early in the day, play small skirmish layers, and once the count passes about 20 the browser does the rest. Put a seed rotation of small layers at the top of MapRotation.cfg, keep reserved slots so your seeders are never locked out once it fills, and agree on a seeding time in your Discord. It matters more than any setting.

Hosting it with us instead

A Squad 44 server from GamezServers installs the PostScriptum server for you and gives you the server name, max players, reserved slots, team change and balance rules, advertising, demo recording, auto update and the RCON password as fields in the control panel. Admins.cfg, MapRotation.cfg and the message files are in the file manager, Workshop mods upload over SFTP, and every server has always on DDoS protection, which matters for a visible clan server. A clan can split the bill between up to 10 members who each pay their own share. If you plan to run mods, read adding Workshop mods to a Squad 44 server next.

FAQ

Is Post Scriptum the same game as Squad 44?

Yes. Post Scriptum was renamed Squad 44 after Offworld Industries took it over. The dedicated server is the same app, 746200, and still uses PostScriptum folder and file names.

What ports does a Squad 44 server use?

10027 UDP for the game, 10037 UDP for the Steam query and 21114 TCP for RCON by default. All three are set on the start line.

How much RAM does a Squad 44 server need?

About 8 GB for a 40 player seed or practice server, 12 GB for a full 80, and 16 GB if you run Workshop mods with large custom maps.

Why is my Squad 44 server not in the browser?

Check ShouldAdvertise=true in Server.cfg, that the query port (10037 UDP by default) is open, and that the server is updated to the current game version.
