How to Become Admin on a No More Room in Hell Server

To become admin on a No More Room in Hell server, you have two levels. Without any plugins, set rcon_password in nmrih/cfg/server.cfg and run commands with rcon from your game console, or type them straight into the server console. For an in-game admin menu, install Metamod:Source and SourceMod into the nmrih folder, add your SteamID to addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini with the z flag, and type sm_admin.

Level 1: admin without plugins

Every Source server has a console, and NMRiH's takes the commands you need to run a night:

The game state commands like respawnplayer got an upgrade in update 1.15: they now accept SteamIDs and partial name matches, and the -force switch respawns a player even when no valid spawn point is available.

To run these from inside the game, set an RCON password in server.cfg:

Restart, then in your game console:

rcon changelevel nms_northway

Keep RCON private. The official server manual advises not forwarding TCP 27015, the RCON port, unless you know you need it, because it attracts attacks. Remote rcon from your game uses that TCP port, so on a home server the safer habit is to run commands in the server console itself and keep RCON for when you really need it.

On a GamezServers server you do not need RCON for most of this: the live console in the panel is the server console. Type status, kick or changelevel there directly.

Level 2: SourceMod for a real admin menu

SourceMod gives you a menu for kicks, bans, slays, map changes and votes, plus admin groups and a big plugin library. It runs on top of Metamod:Source.

A note on update 1.15 and 64 bit

Update 1.15 in September 2026 moved NMRiH to a newer Source engine branch with 64 bit binaries. That matters for server plugins: Metamod:Source and SourceMod have to be builds that support the server you are running. Use the latest builds, and after installing, confirm they loaded (step 4). If they do not load on the current version, check the AlliedModders forums for the NMRiH status of the newest builds before spending time on anything else.

Step 1: Download

From metamodsource.net and sourcemod.net, download the packages for your server's operating system. A GamezServers server runs Linux, so take the Linux .tar.gz files even if your PC runs Windows.

Step 2: Back up and stop

Take a backup of the server (one click in our panel) and stop it.

Step 3: Extract into nmrih

Both archives contain an addons folder. It must end up inside the game folder:

Extract Metamod first, then SourceMod. On our servers, upload the addons and cfg folders from each package into nmrih over SFTP and let them merge.

Step 4: Confirm it loaded

Start the server and type in the console:

meta list
sm version

SourceMod should show as a running Metamod plugin. If meta is an unknown command, the files are in the wrong folder or for the wrong operating system.

Step 5: Add yourself as admin

1. Join the server and run status in your console to read your SteamID.
2. Open nmrih/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini.
3. Add a line at the end:

"STEAM_0:1:23456789" "99:z"

z is every admin flag and 99 is the immunity level, so lower level admins cannot act against you. For helpers, give fewer flags:

For example "STEAM_0:0:11111111" "10:bcgj" makes a moderator who can kick and change maps but not ban.

4. Change the map or run sm_reloadadmins, then in game type:

sm_admin

Bind it for speed: bind p "sm_admin".

Map voting and other built-in plugins

SourceMod includes map vote plugins that are switched off by default. In addons/sourcemod/plugins/disabled, move these up into plugins:

• mapchooser.smx: vote for the next map near the end of a round.
• rockthevote.smx: players type rtv to call a vote early.
• nominations.smx: players nominate maps.

Useful server cvars for admins

Not everything needs a plugin. Recent updates added cvars that used to need SourceMod:

• sv_ban_items bans items by name, comma separated, for example "sv_ban_items me_fubar,exp_tnt,item_pills", with sv_ban_items_on_entities to apply the ban to loose items placed by mappers.
• sv_gamedesc_override changes the game description in the server browser.
• sv_friendly_fire_ignore_infected stops forced friendly fire against infected players.
• sv_sprint_with_held_item lets players sprint while carrying an item.

Put them in server.cfg so they survive restarts.
