How to Add Custom Maps to a No More Room in Hell Server
Add Workshop maps to a NMRiH server with workshop_download or a whole collection, or upload .bsp files to nmrih/maps, then add them to the map cycle.

There are two ways to add custom maps to a No More Room in Hell server. For Steam Workshop maps, type workshop_download <id> (or workshop_download_collection <id> for a whole collection) in the server console and let the server fetch them. For maps from other sites, upload the .bsp file to nmrih/maps. Either way, add the map names to your map cycle file, and make sure players can get the files when they join.
Workshop or manual upload?
| Method | Best for | Players get the map |
|---|---|---|
| Workshop commands | Maps published on the NMRiH Steam Workshop | Through Steam |
Upload to nmrih/maps |
Maps from forums or other sites, or private maps | From the server, ideally through FastDL |
Workshop is less work and keeps maps updated with one command. Manual upload gives you full control. Many servers use both.
Update 1.15 in September 2026 fixed Steam Workshop downloads on dedicated servers, so if Workshop commands failed for you on an older build, update the server and try again.

Method 1: Workshop maps
Find the map's ID
Open the map on the No More Room in Hell Workshop in Steam. The ID is the number at the end of the page address, after ?id=. If you are already subscribed, it is also the folder name under steamapps\workshop\content\224260\ on your PC.
Download it to the server
In the server console:
workshop_download 2914838562
The server downloads the map, which can take a while for large ones. Be patient and watch the console. Then check it arrived:
maps nmo
lists the installed Objective maps, including Workshop ones. Use maps nms for Survival maps.
Add a whole collection
If you or your community keep maps in a Workshop collection, download all of them at once:
workshop_download_collection 3043068173
Replace the number with your collection's ID.
Keep them updated
When map authors push updates, run:
workshop_update
Rules for Workshop maps
- Do not copy Workshop maps into
nmrih/maps. The server keeps them in its own Workshop storage and tracks them innmrih/workshop_maps.txt. Moving them breaks the tracking. - Do not edit
workshop_maps.txtby hand. Use the console commands.
On a GamezServers server, type these commands into the live console in the panel. Nothing needs to be uploaded.
Method 2: Upload .bsp files
- Download the map from wherever it is published. You want the
.bspfile, plus any extra files the author includes (sounds, materials, models), keeping their folder structure. - Stop the server.
- Upload the
.bspintonmrih/maps. Extra content goes into the matching folders undernmrih(for examplenmrih/materials,nmrih/sound). - Start the server and run
maps nmoormaps nmsto confirm it is there.
On our servers, use the file manager for single maps and SFTP for map packs, which is faster for many files.
Step 3: Add maps to the map cycle
Pick which cycle file the server uses in nmrih/cfg/server.cfg:
mapcyclefile "mapcycle.txt"
NMRiH ships three you can start from:
| File | Contains |
|---|---|
mapcycle.txt |
All maps |
mapcycle_objective.txt |
Objective (nmo_) maps only |
mapcycle_survival.txt |
Survival (nms_) maps only |
Open the file you chose and add your custom maps by name, one per line, without .bsp:
nmo_broadway
nmo_chinatown
nmo_shoreline
nms_northway
nmo_mycustommap
Test each custom map once with changelevel nmo_mycustommap before leaving it in rotation. Some older maps do not play well with recent versions; the 1.15 notes even added sv_ammobox_entity_legacy for maps that break with newer ammo box behavior.
Step 4: Get the map to players
This is the part that makes or breaks a custom map night. A player who lacks the map has to download it, and how depends on the method:
Workshop maps: players download them through Steam.
Uploaded maps: the server can send them itself, or you can use a web server.
| Option | Controlled by | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Download from the game server | sv_allowdownload 1 |
Slow, size limited and best avoided for big maps |
| FastDL from a web server | sv_downloadurl "https://your.host/nmrih/" |
Fast, needs a web host with the same folder layout |
For FastDL, put the map files on a web host in a maps folder (compressed .bsp.bz2 files are common for speed), then set sv_downloadurl to the folder above maps. A community setup guide recommends turning off direct downloads from the game server and using FastDL or the Workshop instead.
The simplest option for a private group: share a Workshop collection link and ask everyone to subscribe before map night.

Troubleshooting
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
workshop_download does nothing |
Server on an old build | Update the server, then retry |
Map missing from maps nmo |
Wrong folder or name | Check nmrih/maps, or rerun the Workshop download |
| Players see missing textures | Map's extra content not uploaded or not downloaded | Upload all included folders, set up FastDL |
| Players time out joining | Large map downloading from the game server | Use FastDL or the Workshop |
| Server will not start on the map | Default Map name typo | Use the exact name, case included |
Keep it tidy
Big map packs bloat the server and the map vote. Keep a rotation of maps your group actually plays, and remove ones nobody votes for. Map voting itself comes from SourceMod, covered in how to become admin on a No More Room in Hell server. A one click backup before adding a large pack lets you roll back if something breaks.
Host it the easy way
A No More Room in Hell server from GamezServers gives you a live console for workshop_download and workshop_update, a file manager and SFTP for nmrih/maps and the map cycle files, and the starting map in the panel. Auto update keeps the server on the current build after a restart, which matters for Workshop downloads. For the first time setup, see how to host a No More Room in Hell server.
FAQ
How do I add a Workshop map to my NMRiH server?

How do players get my custom maps?
Workshop maps come through Steam. Uploaded maps download from the server, best through FastDL with sv_downloadurl.
How do I update Workshop maps on the server?
Run workshop_update in the server console.
