The DayZ "Bad version, server rejected connection" error means your game and the server are on different DayZ builds, so the server refuses you. Usually your game is newer than the server right after a patch, or you are on Experimental trying to join a Stable server. Update both sides to the same version and it goes away.

What does "Bad version, server rejected connection" mean?

Every DayZ client and server reports its build number when you connect. If they do not match exactly, the server rejects the connection with:

Bad version, server rejected connection

It is not a ban, a mod problem or a network fault. It is a version check. That makes it easy to fix once you know which side is out of date.

Quick fix

  1. Restart Steam and let DayZ finish updating. Check the Downloads page for a pending update.
  2. Make sure you launch Stable, not DayZ Experimental, unless the server is an Experimental server.
  3. If the server is behind, wait for the owner to update it. If you own it, update the server and restart.
  4. Verify game files in Steam if the version still looks wrong: right click DayZ, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files.

Is my game or the server out of date?

Compare versions before guessing. Your game version shows in the bottom corner of the DayZ main menu. The server's version shows in the DayZ Launcher's server details, and in the in game server browser.

Why does Bad Version happen after an update?

When Bohemia ships a Stable update, Steam updates every player within minutes, but a community server only updates when its owner restarts or runs SteamCMD. For a while, every player is ahead of every server that has not updated yet. That gap is the most common cause of this error by far.

The next big one is planned for 15 October 2026, when update 1.30 and the Badlands expansion go Stable. Expect a wave of Bad Version errors that day until servers catch up. Our Badlands and 1.30 news covers what else changes.

How do I fix Bad Version as a player?

Update DayZ. Fully exit Steam and start it again so it checks for updates. If DayZ shows an update queued in Downloads, let it finish before launching.

Use the right branch. DayZ Experimental is a separate test build with its own small set of servers. If you have been testing a new update on Experimental, switch back to Stable for normal servers.

Verify the install. A partly applied update can leave you on a mixed build. Verifying integrity in Steam redownloads any wrong files.

Clear old favourites and history. If a server moved to a new version or a new address, an old history entry can point you at the wrong instance. Search for the server again by name.

How do I fix Bad Version as a server owner?

Update the server files. Self hosters run SteamCMD with the DayZ server app:

steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/dayz/server +login your_steam_username +app_update 223350 validate +quit

Then restart the server. The validate flag repairs any files that did not update cleanly.

Update mods after the game. After a big update, Workshop mods such as Community Framework and DayZ Expansion often release their own updates. If you update the game but not the mods, the server may start but players get signature or mod mismatch kicks instead. Our signature check fix covers those.

Merge mission file changes. Big updates add items to the vanilla mission files. Update 1.30 adds motorbikes, for example. If you run a custom mission, compare it with the updated vanilla one so new items spawn. Mission files do not cause Bad Version on their own, but they are part of a clean update.

Watch the logs on first start. A version change can expose broken mods. If the server crashes on boot, check the RPT log in your profiles folder and remove mods that have not been updated yet.

Bad Version on a modded server

On a modded server, a version mismatch can come from the game or from a mod. The DayZ Launcher compares the server's mod list against yours when you join:

  • Join through the DayZ Launcher, not the in game browser, so it can download missing or updated mods.
  • Let the launcher resync mods if it says some are out of date. Unsubscribing and resubscribing to a stuck mod forces a fresh download.
  • Check load order only if the owner changed mods. Players do not normally set it themselves when joining through the launcher.

If the game version matches and you still get kicked with a message about signatures or .pbo files, it is a mod key problem, not Bad Version.

Can I join a server on an older version?

No. DayZ does not let you roll back to an older Stable build for normal play. The only fix is for the server to update to your version. If a server has not updated for days after a patch, it is probably abandoned or waiting on mods, so pick another or ask the owner on their Discord.

Avoiding version errors on your own server

The most reliable fix is a server that updates itself. On a GamezServers DayZ server, the game and every Workshop mod check for updates on each restart, so after a patch a single Restart brings everything up to date, and the mod keys are copied for you. If players report the error, restart from the dashboard and check that the server shows Online again. Read how to install mods on a DayZ server for how mod updates work, and DayZ server not showing in launcher if the server vanishes from the list after an update.

FAQ

Is "Bad version, server rejected connection" a ban?

No. It only means your game and the server are on different DayZ versions. Update both to the same build and you can join.

Why does Bad Version happen on every server?

You are probably on the Experimental build, or your game has not finished updating. Launch Stable DayZ and let Steam finish any pending update.

How long until servers update after a DayZ patch?

Hosted servers with automatic updates are usually current after their next restart. Self hosted and modded servers can take hours or a few days while owners wait for mod updates.

Does verifying game files fix Bad Version?

It fixes a broken or half finished update on your side. It does not help when the server is the one that is out of date.

Will update 1.30 cause Bad Version errors?

Yes, for a while. When 1.30 goes Stable on the planned 15 October 2026 date, servers that have not updated will reject players until they restart on the new version.
