What Good Game Server Backups Look Like (What to Demand From a Host)

How to judge a host's backup feature: where backups are stored, how often, how long they are kept, who can restore, and the gaps that lose worlds.

Good game server backups are stored off the server, taken before every risky change like an update, kept long enough to go back several days, restorable by you without a ticket, and downloadable as a file. "Daily backups included" means little on its own: if those backups sit on the same disk as the server, or only support can restore them, or they vanish the moment you cancel, they will fail you at the worst time. Use the checklist below to judge any host's backup feature before you trust it with a world.

The five questions that matter

1. Where are backups stored?

Good: on separate storage from the server's machine. Weak: a folder on the same disk as the server.

A backup on the same disk protects you from a bad mod or a griefer, but not from a failed drive, a corrupted file system or a machine that cannot be recovered. When those happen, the server and its backups disappear together.

2. When are backups taken?

Good: on demand with one click, automatically before game updates and other risky changes, and ideally on a schedule. Weak: once a day at a fixed time, with no manual option.

Most worlds are lost right after a change: a game patch that changes save formats, a new modpack, a server type switch, a config edit. A backup taken automatically just before that moment is worth more than a nightly one from 20 hours ago.

3. How long are they kept?

Good: several restore points going back days. Weak: only the most recent one.

Griefing and corruption are often noticed late. If someone destroyed a base on Monday and you find out on Wednesday, a single backup from Tuesday night already contains the damage.

4. Who can restore, and how?

Good: you can restore any backup from the panel yourself, and you know exactly what a restore replaces. Weak: open a ticket and wait.

Also check what a restore does. Most replace every file on the server with the backup's copy, which means anything since that backup is gone. Download the current state first if you might want parts of it.

5. Can you download a backup?

Good: yes, as a normal archive or through SFTP. Weak: backups can only be restored in place.

A downloadable backup is the only kind that survives a cancelled account, a lapsed card or a host closing. It is also what you take with you if you move to a new host.

Quality details that separate good from great

  • Consistent saves. A backup taken while the game is mid write can capture a half saved file. Better systems save the world or briefly pause writing before copying. If yours does not, run the game's save command first (save-all in Minecraft, server.save in Rust, save in the Valheim admin console, saveworld in ARK).
  • Whole server, not just the world. Configs, mod lists, whitelists, ban lists and plugin data take hours to rebuild. A good backup includes every file.
  • Backups do not use your disk quota, or if they do, the limit is stated.
  • A record of what each backup is: the date, time and what triggered it (manual, scheduled, before update).
  • Clear behavior when you cancel or delete. Know whether backups are deleted with the server and how long you have to download them.

Gaps that lose worlds

Gap What happens
Backups on the same disk Drive fails, everything is gone
Only one restore point Damage noticed late is already in the backup
No backup before updates A patch breaks the save with no clean copy
Support only restores Hours of downtime waiting for a reply
Not downloadable Cancelling or a lapsed card loses the world
Never tested The restore fails the one time you need it

Your side of the deal

Even with excellent host backups, keep your own copies:

  1. Download a backup weekly for an active server, and before big changes.
  2. Test a restore once, ideally on a fresh server or an old backup, so you know it works. How to restore a backup on a game server has the steps.
  3. Automate it if you can. Sync your server files to your PC shows how with free tools.
  4. Keep the game's own backups too, where they exist. Valheim and ARK keep their own rolling copies in the save folder.

Quick checklist to use on any host

  • Backups stored off the server
  • One click manual backups
  • Automatic backups before game updates
  • More than one restore point
  • Restore from the panel, no ticket
  • Downloadable as a file
  • Includes configs and mod files, not only the world
  • Clear policy on what happens to backups when you cancel

How backups work on GamezServers

Click Backup on your server's Overview any time. Backups are also made automatically before game updates and server type switches, and they are stored off the server. To roll back, open Settings, find Backups and click Restore next to the one you want: the server stops, every file returns to that moment, and you start it again when it finishes. Only the server's owner can restore. For your own copy, the Files tab downloads any folder as a zip, and SFTP handles big worlds. Deleting a server removes its files and backups for good, so download anything you want first; after a cancelled subscription ends, files are kept for 14 days. Details are in the control panel docs. FAQ

How often should a game server be backed up?

At least daily for an active server, plus a backup right before every update, mod change or config edit. Those moments are when most worlds break.

Are host backups enough on their own?

They cover most accidents. Keep a downloaded copy too, because host backups cannot help if you lose access to the account or the host itself has a problem.

What is the difference between a backup and a snapshot?

Hosts use the words loosely. A snapshot usually means a copy of the whole server at a moment, and a backup can mean that or just the world. Ask what is included.

Can I restore just one file from a backup?

It depends on the host. If the restore only works on the whole server, download the backup, take the file you need from the archive, and upload it with the file manager or SFTP.
