Valheim Server Lag Fix: Desync, Rubber Banding and Stutter
Valheim server lag usually comes from zone ownership, huge bases or one player's bad connection, not the server. How to find which and fix it for good.

- A server that pulls its weight
Most Valheim lag is not the server running out of power. Valheim hands the simulation of each area to the first player who enters it, so one player with a weak PC or a bad connection causes desync for everyone near them. The other big causes are huge bases with thousands of building pieces and items, and hosting from inside the game. Fix the player connection first, keep bases lean, and play on a dedicated server.
Quick fix
- Find who is lagging. If it only happens near one player, their connection or PC is the cause.
- Have that player leave and rejoin, or have a player with a good connection enter the area first.
- Restart the server if it has been up for days.
- Stop hosting from your game. Move the world to a dedicated server so nobody's PC is both playing and hosting.
- Clean up the base area: dropped items, overflowing storage of junk, and too many tamed animals.
Why does Valheim lag even on a good server?
This is the part most guides skip. In vanilla Valheim, the server mostly stores and forwards the world. The actual simulation of an area, enemies, physics, carts, falling trees and tamed animals, runs on the PC of the player who owns that zone, which is usually whoever got there first.
That means:
- A player on Wi-Fi, a laptop or a slow upload can make enemies freeze, teleport or hit you from across the room, even though the server itself is fine.
- When that player is near the base, everyone near the base lags.
- When they log off, ownership passes to someone else and the lag often disappears instantly.
If your lag comes and goes with one particular person being online, this is almost certainly it.
Causes and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Enemies freeze or teleport near one player | That player owns the zone and has a bad connection or weak PC | Wired connection, close downloads, or let someone else enter first |
| Everyone lags at the main base | Too many building pieces, items or animals in one area | Spread out, clean up, cull animals |
| Short freezes every 30 minutes | The world saving | Normal on big worlds. Keep the world lean |
| Lag only when the host plays | Hosting from the game | Use a dedicated server |
| Ships and carts jitter | Zone ownership changing between players | Have the driver enter the area first |
| Everyone lags all the time, everywhere | Server short on CPU or RAM, or a poor host connection | Bigger plan or better hosting |
Fix 1: stop hosting from your own game
When you host from the game, your PC runs the game, runs the world for everyone, and pushes all the traffic over your home upload. Valheim is much happier with a dedicated server: it runs on its own machine with a proper connection, and the host becomes just another player.
The server program is free from Iron Gate, but it needs a machine that stays on. Our guide to moving your world shows how to take your existing world with you.
Fix 2: check each player's connection
Since players simulate the areas they are in, their connection matters as much as the server's.
- Wired beats Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi packet loss shows up as desync for the whole group.
- Upload speed counts. Each player sends updates about the zones they own. A saturated upload, for example from cloud backups or streaming, hurts everyone near them.
- Press F2 in game to see the connection panel with each player's ping and connection quality. High or jumping numbers point to the culprit.
Fix 3: keep big bases lean
Every building piece, item on the ground, item in a chest, crop and animal is a networked object. The game has to load and sync all of them when someone enters the area. Late game mega bases have tens of thousands, and that is when everyone stutters walking home.
What helps most:
- Pick up dropped items. Piles of resin, stones and wood on the ground are a classic lag source. Smelters and kilns spitting output onto the floor add up fast.
- Control animal breeding. Wolves and lox breed until you stop them. Dozens of tamed animals in one pen are a real load.
- Fewer fires and lights. Each torch and fire adds work, especially in big numbers.
- Spread out. Separate outposts in different zones lag far less than one giant compound.
- Use less dirt work. Heavy terraforming with the hoe and pickaxe in one area adds lots of terrain changes the game must sync.
Fix 4: restart regularly
A server that has been up for days collects stray objects and memory. A restart once a day at a quiet hour is cheap insurance. Remember Valheim saves every 30 minutes by default, so a restart right after a save loses nothing.
Fix 5: server side performance mods (PC only)
On a BepInEx server, two kinds of Thunderstore mods target lag directly:
- Network mods such as Better Networking raise Valheim's conservative data rate limits and add compression.
- Server side simulation mods such as Serverside Simulations move zone ownership from players to the server, so one weak connection no longer drags everyone down.
Read each mod's page for whether players need it installed too, and keep versions matching. These mods only make sense on a PC only server, since console players cannot install mods. Our BepInEx guide covers the setup.
Fix 6: give the server enough room
Valheim is light on RAM compared with most survival games, but a full crew of 10 on a heavily built world, or a modpack, needs headroom.
| Your world | RAM |
|---|---|
| Vanilla, up to 5 players | 4 GB |
| Vanilla, full crew of 10 or big late game bases | 6 GB |
| BepInEx modpacks or heavily built worlds | 8 GB |
Those are the sizes our plans are built around. Fast single core speed matters more than core count, because much of Valheim's server work runs on one thread. More background in why is my game server lagging.
Fixing lag on a GamezServers Valheim server
On a GamezServers Valheim server the server side is covered: a dedicated machine, a connection built for game traffic and DDoS protection on every server. When a world gets heavy:
- Press Restart for a quick reset, or turn on Sleep when empty in Settings so the server rests when nobody is on.
- Press Backup before a big base clean up, in case you delete something you wanted.
- Move up a plan in Settings if your world has outgrown it. Upgrades are prorated and apply on the next restart.
- Switch to the BepInEx type if your all PC crew wants performance mods.
If lag continues on a healthy server, the cause is nearly always zone ownership or one player's connection, and the fixes above apply.
FAQ
Why does Valheim lag when one friend joins?
They take ownership of the zones they enter and simulate them for everyone nearby. A weak PC or poor connection on their end shows up as lag for the whole group.
Does a dedicated server fix Valheim lag?
It fixes lag caused by the host's PC and home internet, which is a big share of it. Lag from zone ownership and huge bases still needs the other fixes.
How do I see ping in Valheim?
Press F2 in game. The connection panel shows each player's ping and connection quality.
Can Valheim run at a higher tick rate?
Not in vanilla. Network mods on a BepInEx server can raise data rate limits, but they need care and are PC only.
Does crossplay cause lag?
Crossplay routes traffic through a relay, which can add some latency. If your whole group is on Steam, turn crossplay off.
A server that pulls its weight
A hosted Valheim server takes the host's PC and home upload out of the picture, with backups and plan changes in a click. See Valheim server hosting, or set up crossplay if your crew is on mixed platforms.
