Valheim Deep North on an Existing World: Does It Generate?

Will the Valheim Deep North generate on your old world or server? Only unexplored zones get it. How to check, your options and how to regenerate safely.

The Valheim Deep North does generate on an existing world, but only in zones nobody has explored. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ says biome generation "will only work properly on areas that have not yet been explored." If your group never went far north, you are fine. If you did, those zones stay as they were.

Does the Deep North work on an old Valheim world?

Yes, with one condition. Valheim builds the world in zones the first time a player gets close enough to load them. Once a zone is generated, it is saved, and later updates do not rebuild it. That is why Iron Gate's Valheim 1.0 FAQ says your world "will receive new content even if it was created before the update, although biome generation will only work properly on areas that have not yet been explored."

So the question is simple: did anyone on your world or server load the far north before 1.0 arrived on September 9, 2026?

Your situation What happens
Nobody went to the far north The Deep North generates normally when you get there
Someone sailed along the north edge Those zones keep the old placeholder terrain, the rest is new
Your group explored most of the north You will see little of the new biome without regenerating

The same applies to the alternate versions of earlier biomes that 1.0 added at the outer edges of the world. Edges you already visited will not change.

How do you check whether the north is explored?

Open the map and look north. The revealed area on your map is a good guide to what has been loaded, though zones load a little beyond what you have actually seen. On a dedicated server, everyone's exploration counts, not just yours. Ask your group whether anyone sailed north before 1.0, and check their maps if you share map data through cartography tables.

What are your options if the north is already explored?

There are three:

Option 1: Start a new world

Iron Gate's recommendation. The FAQ suggests a fresh start for the best 1.0 experience, and Deep North gear assumes you progressed through every biome. On a server, you can keep the old world and switch the world name to a new one, so nothing is lost.

Option 2: Explore further around the edge

The north is large. Zones your group never loaded still generate correctly, so sailing to a different part of the northern region may be enough for a smaller group that only touched one corner.

Option 3: Regenerate the explored zones with Upgrade World

The community mod Upgrade World by JereKuusela has a deepnorth command that "fully regenerates Deep North biomes and nearby water areas." It is not official, so treat it carefully:

  • Its base detection is "very conservative," so a single workbench or campfire protects a large area around it. Anything it does not detect as a base in those zones is deleted.
  • The author's own steps start with back up your world and end with uninstalling the mod.
  • It needs BepInEx, and the mod must be installed on the admin client and on the server.

How do you use Upgrade World on a dedicated server world?

The safest route is to do the work on a copy, then upload the result:

  1. Stop the server and download the world folder from worlds_local. Keep a second untouched copy.
  2. Install BepInEx and Upgrade World on your own PC through a mod manager.
  3. Put the world in your local worlds_local folder and open it as a local game.
  4. Open the console with F5, type upgrade and use Tab to see the options, including deepnorth.
  5. Run it and confirm with start, as the mod asks.
  6. Check your bases, especially anything in or near the north. If something is wrong, restore the copy.
  7. Upload the folder back to the server's worlds_local, then start the server.
  8. Remove the mod from your PC when you are done.

Since 1.0, worlds are saved as folders, so move the whole folder, as covered in how to upload a Valheim world to a dedicated server. If you run a modded server anyway, our Valheim BepInEx guide explains running mods on the server itself.

Can you use dev commands to find the Deep North?

Valheim 1.0 added dev commands such as findbiome, biomeinfo and altbiomes, and the help command lists what they do. They need dev commands turned on, and using them can switch off achievements for that character. Patch 1.0.12 added an opt back in command for achievements if you have used dev commands, and items spawned with cheats are marked as "cheated item" (Steam, September 11, 2026). Use them on a test copy if you care about achievements.

Terrain seams after 1.0

If the Deep North did generate but you see odd terrain seams, that is a separate issue. Patches 1.0.15 and 1.0.16 fixed terrain duplication and terrain reverting in the Deep North, and Iron Gate suggests fixing leftover seams with a pickaxe, hoe or by walking over the snow. Details in our Valheim patch 1.0.16 notes.

Deep North on a GamezServers server

On our Valheim servers, you can run a fresh 1.0 world next to your old one: change World name in the panel to a new name and restart, and the old world stays in the file manager. To regenerate an old world, download its folder from the file manager, follow the Upgrade World steps above on your PC, and upload it back. Take a backup from the panel first.

FAQ

Do I need a new world for the Valheim Deep North?

No. Old worlds get the Deep North in any zone that was never explored. Only zones someone already loaded keep the old terrain.

Why is there no Deep North on my Valheim server?

Someone probably explored the far north before 1.0, so those zones were already saved. Try unexplored parts of the north, start a new world, or regenerate with a backup.

Is Upgrade World safe to use?

It is an established community tool but unofficial, and it deletes anything in regenerated zones that it does not detect as a base. Only run it on a backed up copy.

Does exploring with a friend on the server count?

Yes. Zones load around every player on the server, so anyone's trip north before 1.0 counts.

Can I keep my old world and start a new one on the same server?

Yes. Each world is its own folder, so you can switch the server between worlds by changing the world name.
