To use RCON on a SA-MP server, join it and type /rcon login yourpassword in chat, using the rcon_password from server.cfg. After that, every server command works in game by prefixing it with /rcon, for example /rcon kick 12 or /rcon gmx. The same commands typed without /rcon work in the server console. RCON is built into SA-MP itself, so it works no matter which gamemode you run, even one with its own admin system.

Below is every RCON command, grouped by what you would use it for, plus the habits that keep RCON from becoming a security hole.

Logging in

  1. Join the server.
  2. Press T to open chat.
  3. Type /rcon login yourpassword and press Enter.

You get a confirmation message and the server log records the login with your name and IP. A wrong password is also logged as a bad RCON attempt, and repeated failures can get that IP kicked or banned, either by the server or by your gamemode's protection. IP bans live in samp.ban, so if you lock yourself out, remove your IP from that file and restart.

There is no logout command. You stay logged in until you disconnect.

The password must not be changeme. The server refuses to start with the default, which stops the most common mistake but not a weak password. Anyone holding it can run exec, change the gamemode or ban every player, so treat it like a root password and do not share it with moderators. Give them a gamemode admin level instead.

Player management

Command What it does
/rcon kick [id] Kicks the player with that ID
/rcon ban [id] Kicks and bans the player's IP
/rcon banip [ip] Bans an IP. Wildcards work: banip 85.12.*.*
/rcon unbanip [ip] Removes an IP ban
/rcon reloadbans Rereads samp.ban after you edit it by hand
/rcon players Lists connected players with ID, name, IP and ping
/rcon say [text] Sends a message to all players as Admin

Player IDs show in the scoreboard (Tab). SA-MP bans are IP bans, which is why ban takes an ID but stores an address. Players on changing IPs come back, so many communities layer an account ban in their gamemode on top.

Wildcard IP bans catch whole ranges. Be careful with them: one wide ban on a mobile ISP can lock out dozens of innocent players.

Gamemodes and scripts

Command What it does
/rcon gmx Ends the current mode and loads the next one in the gamemode0, gamemode1 rotation
/rcon changemode [name] Switches to a specific .amx in gamemodes/, without the extension
/rcon loadfs [name] Loads a filterscript
/rcon unloadfs [name] Unloads a filterscript
/rcon reloadfs [name] Unloads and reloads a filterscript, handy after uploading a fixed .amx
/rcon exec [file] Runs every line in a .cfg file from the server folder

gmx is the standard way to restart a gamemode after an update without restarting the whole server process. It does not reload plugins, so a new plugin version still needs a full restart.

exec is useful for presets. Make event.cfg with a different hostname, password and weather, then /rcon exec event switches the server into event mode in one line.

Server variables you can change live

Command Example
/rcon hostname [name] /rcon hostname Freeroam Friday
/rcon gamemodetext [text] Changes the mode name shown in the browser
/rcon mapname [name] Changes the map shown in the browser
/rcon password [pass] Sets a join password. password 0 removes it
/rcon weather [id] Sets the weather, for example weather 8 for storm
/rcon gravity [value] Default is 0.008
/rcon weburl [url] Website shown in the browser
/rcon language [text] Language shown in the browser
/rcon rcon_password [pass] Changes the RCON password until the next restart
/rcon rcon 0 Disables remote RCON until it is set back to 1

Changes made this way last until the server restarts. To make them permanent, edit server.cfg.

Network and anti flood limits

These are for servers with players being kicked by flood protection, usually caused by lag or by scripts that send too much.

Command Purpose
/rcon messageslimit [n] Max messages per second a client may send
/rcon ackslimit [n] Max acknowledgements per second
/rcon messageholelimit [n] Max gap in message order before kicking
/rcon playertimeout [ms] How long before an unresponsive player times out

Raise them gradually and only when your log shows those kicks. Setting them very high removes protection against flood attacks.

Discovering commands on your version

Two commands list what your server supports:

/rcon cmdlist
/rcon varlist

cmdlist shows every command and varlist every variable with its current value. Use them after an update or if you run a server build with extra commands.

Using RCON from the console instead

On the machine running the server, type commands into the server window without /rcon:

kick 4
gmx
hostname Testing night
exit

exit shuts the server down cleanly. On a hosted server the live console in the panel does the same job, so you can manage the server from a browser without joining the game.

Security habits that matter

  • Long, unique password. Brute force attempts against RCON are common on listed servers.
  • Watch server_log.txt for RCON logins and bad login attempts.
  • Gamemode admin systems for staff. Most roleplay and freeroam modes have levels for kicking and muting. Keep RCON for the owner.
  • Change the password after any staff change. Use server.cfg so it survives a restart.

If you would rather not keep a home PC online for this, a GamezServers SA-MP server sets the RCON password from the panel, gives you a live console for every command above, and keeps one click backups so a bad exec or gamemode update can be rolled back. FAQ

How do I become admin on my SA-MP server?

Type /rcon login followed by the rcon_password from server.cfg. That gives full RCON access. Your gamemode may also have its own admin levels, set in its files or database.

How do I restart a SA-MP gamemode without restarting the server?

Use /rcon gmx. It loads the next mode in the rotation, which is the same mode if you only have gamemode0.

How do I unban someone on SA-MP?

Use /rcon unbanip with their IP, or remove the line from samp.ban and run /rcon reloadbans.

Why did RCON ban me?

Repeated wrong passwords from one IP can trigger a ban, either from the server or from an anti brute force script. Remove your IP from samp.ban and restart the server.

Do RCON commands work on open.mp?

Yes. open.mp keeps the same RCON commands and /rcon login, so existing habits carry over.
