"Unable to connect to world" on a Bedrock Dedicated Server almost always comes down to one of five things: the wrong port in the Port box, a version mismatch between your game and the server, an Xbox account privacy setting that blocks multiplayer, a port that is not open for UDP, or (on Windows) trying to join a server running on the same PC. Check them in that order. If only one player is affected, start with their privacy settings. If nobody can join, start with the port.
Quick checklist
- The Port box has your server's port, not the default 19132 (unless your server really uses 19132).
- Your Minecraft and the server are on the same version.
- Your Xbox account allows multiplayer: account.xbox.com, Privacy & online safety, You can join multiplayer games set to Allow.
- The server is running and its console shows no errors.
- Self hosted: UDP (not TCP) 19132 is forwarded and allowed through the firewall.
- Joining from the same Windows PC as the server: loopback is enabled.
- Try another network (phone hotspot) to rule out school, work or VPN blocking.
Is it everyone, or just one player?
This one question halves the work.
- Nobody can join: the server, the address, the port or the network is wrong. Go to the server side fixes.
- One player cannot join, others can: it is that player's version, account settings, device or network.
Fix 1: Put the right port in the Port box
Bedrock asks for the Server Address and the Port in two separate boxes. If your host gives you 203.0.113.10:25432, put 203.0.113.10 in Server Address and 25432 in Port. Leaving the port on its default 19132 when the server uses something else is the single most common cause we see.
Also check for a space at the end of the address, and do not type http:// or the colon into the address box.
Fix 2: Match the game and server version
Bedrock only connects when the client and server run the same protocol version. Phones and consoles update Minecraft automatically, so after a release the server is suddenly behind. Usually the game says "Outdated server" or "Outdated client", but sometimes players just see "Unable to connect to world".
- Server older than the game: update the server. On GamezServers click Update game, which backs up your world first and keeps your settings and allowlist.
- Game older than the server: update Minecraft from the app store or console store.
- Preview or beta clients cannot join normal servers.

Fix 3: Xbox privacy and family settings
Every Bedrock player signs in with a Microsoft account, and the account can be blocked from multiplayer. This is the classic "it works for everyone except my kid" problem.
- Sign in at account.xbox.com with the player's account, open Privacy & online safety.
- Under the Xbox online safety settings, set You can join multiplayer games to Allow.
- If they play with people on other platforms (PlayStation, Switch, phone), also allow You can join cross-network play.
- Save, then sign out of Minecraft and back in.
On a child account the child cannot change these. The parent or family organizer has to allow multiplayer in Microsoft Family Safety (the Xbox Family Settings app or family.microsoft.com). Changes can take a while to reach every Microsoft service, so if it still fails right after, try again later.
While you are in there: if the player is not signed in to a Microsoft account at all, they cannot join a dedicated server. Microsoft's own server docs say players connecting to a server outside the local network always need Xbox Live sign in, whatever the server's online-mode setting. Turning online-mode off does not help.
Fix 4: The server is not reachable (self hosted)
If nobody outside your home can join a server you run yourself:
- Forward UDP, not TCP. Bedrock runs on UDP. A TCP only port forward does nothing. Forward UDP 19132 (and 19133 for IPv6) to the server PC's local IP.
- Firewall. On Windows, allow
bedrock_server.exeon public and private networks when Windows asks, or add a rule for UDP 19132. On Ubuntu, sudo ufw allow 19132andsudo ufw allow 19133. - Carrier grade NAT. If your router's WAN IP does not match what a "what is my IP" site shows, your internet provider shares your public IP with other customers, and port forwarding cannot work. You need a public IP from your ISP or a hosted server.
- Wrong IP. Friends outside your home need your public IP, not the
192.168.x.xaddress. People on your Wi-Fi use the local one. - Port in
server.properties. If you changedserver-port, forward that port instead.
This is the part of self hosting that eats evenings. A hosted Bedrock server skips it entirely: the port is open, DDoS protection is on, and your home IP is never shared.
Fix 5: Joining from the same Windows PC (loopback)
The Windows version of Minecraft is a Store app, and Windows blocks Store apps from connecting to servers on the same machine. Microsoft's BDS docs give this command to allow it. Run it in an admin terminal once:
CheckNetIsolation.exe LoopbackExempt -a -p=S-1-15-2-1958404141-86561845-1752920682-3514627264-368642714-62675701-733520436
Then connect to 127.0.0.1, port 19132. This only matters when the game and the server run on the same computer.
Fix 6: Allowlist, full server or a kick
These usually show their own message, but they are worth ruling out:
- "You are not invited to this server": the allowlist is on and the Gamertag is missing or misspelled. See how to whitelist players on a Minecraft Bedrock server.
- Server full:
max-playersis reached. - Kicked right after joining: check the server console for the reason. Add-ons with errors or a required resource pack the player declined can cause it, see
texturepack-requiredin Bedrock server properties explained.
Fix 7: The player's network
School, work, hotel and some public Wi-Fi block game traffic. VPNs and some "game boosters" route UDP badly. Have the player try a phone hotspot. If it works there, the network is the problem, not the server.
On Xbox and PlayStation, also confirm the console shows an Open or Moderate NAT type in its network settings. A Strict NAT can break joining.
Consoles: the server does not show up at all
Xbox, PlayStation and Switch have no Add Server button, so console players cannot type in an address the normal way. That is a different problem from "Unable to connect", and the workarounds are in how to join a Minecraft Bedrock server on Xbox, PS5 and Switch.
Still stuck? Look at the console
Open the server console and have the player try to join. If you see a Player connected line, the network is fine and the problem is in the game: allowlist, add-ons or a kick reason. If nothing appears at all, the connection never reached the server: port, address, version or network.
On GamezServers the Console tab shows this live, and support at support@gamezservers.com is there 24/7 if you want a second pair of eyes.
FAQ
Why can my friends join but I cannot?
Something is different on your side: your game version, your Xbox privacy settings, your network, or you are on the same PC as a self hosted server and need the loopback fix.
Does "Unable to connect to world" mean the server is down?
Sometimes, but not usually. Check the server is running and its console has no errors. If it is up, the cause is almost always the port, the version or account settings.
Do Bedrock players need Xbox Live to join a server?
They need a free Microsoft account signed in to Minecraft. Without one they cannot join any dedicated server, whatever the server's settings.
Why does it work on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data?
Some mobile carriers handle UDP game traffic badly or block it. Try another network, or a different time. The server itself does not treat mobile players differently.
Can a VPN cause "Unable to connect to world"?
Yes. Many VPNs handle UDP poorly or route through a blocked region. Turn the VPN off and try again.
