Minecraft Java Edition 26.3, the Wilderness Bound game drop, released on September 15, 2026 (Minecraft.net, September 15, 2026). For server owners the big changes are a whitelist that is now on by default, removed log lines that bots and wrappers used to read, and new data pack formats. It still runs on Java 25.
What is in Minecraft 26.3 Wilderness Bound?
Wilderness Bound is the third game drop of 2026 and arrives as Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50 on the same day. The gameplay side is a camping theme:
| Addition | What it is |
|---|---|
| Dappled Forest biome | An autumn forest near cold biomes, with poplar trees in three leaf colours, red shrubs, shelf mushrooms and fallen poplars |
| Poplar wood | A full new wood set: logs, planks, stairs, slabs, doors, fences, signs and boats |
| Abandoned Camps | A new structure in many biomes, with chests and barrels of loot |
| New explorer maps | Camps hold maps that lead to other camps, in biomes like Cherry Grove, Pale Garden and Swamp |
| Cushions | Placeable seats crafted from 3 wool slabs of one colour |
| Straw Beds | Crafted from 3 hay bales (makes 4). Sleep through the night without setting your spawn point |
| Wool and concrete stairs and slabs | In all 16 colours |
Realms also got Invite Codes: each Realm can have up to five, each with its own on or off switch and expiry date. That only matters if you use Realms, not a dedicated server.
What changed for Minecraft servers in 26.3?
Three changes in the official changelog affect anyone running a server.
The whitelist is now on by default
The changelog says it plainly: "The white-list property is now true by default." A server that generates a fresh server.properties on 26.3 lets nobody in until you add players, and everyone sees:
You are not white-listed on this server!
Existing servers keep whatever value their server.properties already has. This only bites new servers and servers where you deleted or reset the file. The fix is one console command per player, whitelist add <name>, or whitelist off if you want an open server. Our Minecraft whitelist guide has every command.
Some log lines are gone
Mojang removed "some log lines that server software might look out for" and points developers to the Minecraft Server Management Protocol instead, now at version 3.1.0. If you use a Discord bot, a panel script or a wrapper that reads logs/latest.log to detect joins, deaths or the server becoming ready, test it on 26.3 before you rely on it. Version 3.1.0 also adds notifications for when the server upgrades a world on startup: upgrade_started, upgrade_progress, upgrade_finished and upgrade_failed.
Data packs need updating
The data pack format jumped from 107.1 in 26.2 to 121.0, and the resource pack format is now 97.1. Several formats changed along the way: potion recipes and pottery sherds are data driven, number providers were split into integer and float registries, and Block State fields Name and Properties were renamed to id and properties. Expect older data packs to need updates from their authors.
One change can quietly break map making servers: signs no longer run click events or commands in their text by default. A new allow_op_features field turns the old behaviour back on. Signs placed before 26.3 get it set to true automatically, but any sign you create from now on needs it set explicitly.
Does Paper support Minecraft 26.3?
Yes, but as a beta. As of October 3, 2026, every Paper 26.3 build on PaperMC's download API is marked beta, while Paper 26.2 has stable builds. Fabric already lists 26.3 as a stable game version, and NeoForge's newest release, 26.3.0.45, is also tagged beta.
If your server runs plugins you depend on, the safe order is:
- Wait for your key plugins to post 26.3 builds.
- Take a backup.
- Update the server, start it and read the console for errors.
- Only then tell your players to update.
Players on 26.2 cannot join a 26.3 server and the reverse is also true. Our outdated server and outdated client guide covers ViaVersion if you want both to join during the switch.
What changed in Minecraft 26.2 Chaos Cubed?
The previous drop, Chaos Cubed, released on June 16, 2026 as Java 26.2 (Minecraft.net, June 16, 2026). It added sulfur caves, the sulfur cube mob and geysers, plus a few server changes that still apply on 26.3:
- Separate spam limits.
chat-spam-threshold-secondsandcommand-spam-threshold-secondsreplaced the single combined limit. Both default to10, and0turns that kick off. See Minecraft "Kicked for spamming" fix. - Management protocol 3.0.0. The management server now starts before the world loads, so its heartbeat keeps running during long world upgrades.
- A Friends List. Java now has a friends list on the title screen. Peer to peer play that let friends join a singleplayer world over the internet was tested in snapshots but pulled before release, with Mojang saying "the experience wasn't what we wanted it to be for all players" (PCGamesN, May 27, 2026). Playing together over the internet on Java still needs a server or a Realm.
Also from this spring: Paper 26.1 moved every dimension into world/dimensions/minecraft/, replacing the old world_nether and world_the_end folders (PaperMC, April 26, 2026). Worlds upgraded to 26.1 or newer cannot be downgraded.
What this means for your server
| You run | What to do |
|---|---|
| A new 26.3 server | Add yourself and friends with whitelist add, or turn the whitelist off |
| An existing 26.2 Paper server | Stay on 26.2 until your plugins support 26.3, then back up and update |
| A Fabric or NeoForge modpack | Stay on the pack's version. Modpacks move to new versions slowly |
| Bots or scripts that read the log | Test them on a copy first, or move them to the management protocol |
| Custom maps with command signs | Check signs you place now have allow_op_features set |
Java stays at 25 for every 26.x release, so nothing changes there. If your server is still on 1.21.x and you jump to 26.3, read the 26.1 world format change above and keep a backup you can go back to.

FAQ
When did Minecraft 26.3 come out?
Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 Wilderness Bound released on September 15, 2026. Bedrock Edition got the same drop as version 26.50 on the same day.
Why can nobody join my new 26.3 server?
From 26.3, white-list defaults to true in a newly created server.properties. Add players with whitelist add <name> or run whitelist off.
What Java version does Minecraft 26.3 need?
Java 25. Every 26.x version uses it, and Mojang's own version file for 26.3 lists Java 25 as the runtime.
Is Paper 26.3 stable?
Not yet. On October 3, 2026, PaperMC still lists all 26.3 builds as beta. Paper 26.2 builds are stable.
Can I go back to 26.2 after updating my world to 26.3?
Not safely. Minecraft does not support loading a world in an older version than it was last saved in, so restore the backup you took before updating instead.
What is the next Minecraft update after 26.3?
Mojang started 26.4 snapshots on September 22, 2026. No release date has been announced yet.
