To set the spawn point on a Minecraft server, stand where you want it and run /setworldspawn as an operator, or type setworldspawn <x> <y> <z> in the console. New players and anyone without a bed then appear there. To make them land on that exact block instead of somewhere nearby, also run gamerule respawn_radius 0. Spawn protection, the area around spawn that only operators can edit, is set with spawn-protection in server.properties. This guide covers all of it for Java, plus /spawn commands and the Bedrock version.
How spawning works on a Minecraft server
There are three different "spawns", and mixing them up causes most confusion:
| Spawn | Who uses it | Set with |
|---|---|---|
| World spawn | New players, and anyone who dies with no bed or respawn anchor | setworldspawn |
| Player respawn point | One player, after they sleep in a bed or set an anchor | A bed, an anchor, or spawnpoint |
A plugin's /spawn location |
Players who type /spawn |
/setspawn from EssentialsX or similar |
A player's own bed always wins over the world spawn. So if you move the world spawn and someone still respawns at their old house, that is their bed doing its job.
Step 1: Set the world spawn
In game, as an operator, walk to the exact spot and run:
/setworldspawn
With no coordinates it uses the block you are standing on. Press F3 to see your coordinates if you want to note them down.
From the console, give the coordinates:
setworldspawn 120 72 -340
The change is saved in the world, so no restart is needed.
If you get "Unknown or incomplete command", you are not an operator. Run op YourName in the console first, as shown in how to op someone on a Minecraft server.
Step 2: Make players land on the exact spot
By default, new players and bedless respawns in survival land somewhere within 10 blocks of the world spawn, on a random safe block. That is handy in an open field and annoying when spawn is a small building, because people appear on the roof or outside the walls.
Set the radius to zero:
gamerule respawn_radius 0
On servers older than 1.21.11 the rule has its old name: gamerule spawnRadius 0.
If players spawn on top of your spawn building, the world spawn is inside a solid block or under a roof. Move it to an open block with air above, such as a floor tile in a room with a high ceiling.
Step 3: Set spawn protection
Spawn protection stops non operators from breaking or placing blocks near the world spawn. It lives in server.properties:
spawn-protection=16
How it works:
- The value is a radius.
16protects a 33 by 33 block square centred on spawn (16 on each side plus the centre block). 0turns it off.- It only applies in the Overworld.
- Operators are never blocked.
- It only works when at least one operator exists. On a server with an empty
ops.json, spawn protection does nothing.
Stop the server, edit the value and start it again, since server.properties is only read on start. On a friends SMP, 0 is usually better, because otherwise everyone wonders why they cannot build near spawn. On a public server, use a region plugin like WorldGuard rather than spawn protection: it lets you allow buttons and doors while blocking building, and protect any shape you want.
Step 4: Give players a /spawn command
Vanilla has no command for normal players to go back to spawn. The usual fix is EssentialsX with its EssentialsXSpawn module, both installed on a Paper or Purpur server.
- Install
EssentialsXandEssentialsXSpawnfrom the same release. Our EssentialsX guide covers which jars to download. - Restart the server.
- Stand at your spawn and run
/setspawn. - Give players the
essentials.spawnpermission with LuckPerms so they can use/spawn.
EssentialsXSpawn can also send new players to the spawn point on first join and after death, and its own spawn overrides the world spawn for respawns when set up that way. Permissions are covered in how to install LuckPerms.
Set one player's respawn point
To change where a specific player respawns without moving the world spawn:
spawnpoint Steve 120 72 -340
Without coordinates, spawnpoint Steve uses the player's current position. This is the same as them sleeping in a bed at that spot, so a new bed later replaces it.
Spawn on Paper and in other worlds
On Paper and Purpur each dimension and each Multiverse world has its own spawn. setworldspawn changes the world you run it in. If you use Multiverse, set the spawn for each world with Multiverse's own command while standing in that world, /mvsetspawn. Our guide to changing the world on a Minecraft server covers running several worlds.
Setting spawn on a Bedrock server
Bedrock Dedicated Server uses the same command name:
setworldspawn 120 72 -340
Run it in the server console. In game, it needs an operator in a world with allow-cheats=true, and cheats disable achievements, so the console is better. The Bedrock spawn radius rule is lowercase: gamerule spawnradius 0. Bedrock's server.properties has no spawn protection setting. See the Bedrock server commands list for the rest.
Common spawn problems
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Players spawn on the roof | Spawn is under a solid block, or respawn_radius scatters them |
Move spawn to an open block, set respawn_radius 0 |
| Players can't break blocks near spawn | Spawn protection | Set spawn-protection=0 and restart, or make them operators |
| Spawn protection does nothing | No operators exist | Op at least one account |
| A player still respawns at home | Their bed or respawn anchor | Expected. Breaking the bed resets them to world spawn |
| New players spawn far away after a world upload | The uploaded world's spawn is elsewhere | Run setworldspawn where you want it |
/spawn says unknown command |
Vanilla has no /spawn |
Install EssentialsX and EssentialsXSpawn |
Setting spawn on GamezServers
On a GamezServers Minecraft server, make yourself an operator with the Make operator button, then run /setworldspawn in game where you are standing. Edit spawn-protection in server.properties from the Files tab and press Restart. Building a spawn hub for an SMP? The SMP setup guide covers the plugins and settings that go with it.
FAQ
What is the command to set spawn in Minecraft?
/setworldspawn sets the world spawn at your position. /setworldspawn x y z sets it at coordinates. In the server console, leave out the slash.
How do I make players spawn in the exact same spot?
Run gamerule respawn_radius 0 on Java 1.21.11 or newer, or gamerule spawnRadius 0 on older versions. Make sure the spawn block has open air above it.
Why can't my friends build near spawn?
spawn-protection in server.properties is on, and it is 16 blocks by default. Set it to 0 and restart, or give them operator.
Does setworldspawn need a restart?
No. It takes effect immediately and is saved in the world.
How do I add a /spawn command for players?
Install EssentialsX and EssentialsXSpawn on Paper, run /setspawn at your spawn, and give players the essentials.spawn permission.
