How to Move an Enshrouded Server to a New Host

Move an Enshrouded dedicated server to a new host: copy every 3ad85aea file in savegame, including the index, and rebuild roles in enshrouded_server.json.

To move an Enshrouded server to a new host, stop the old server and download its whole savegame folder, which holds every file starting with 3ad85aea (the world, its numbered copies, 3ad85aea_info and the -index files), plus enshrouded_server.json from the server folder. Upload all the 3ad85aea files into savegame on the new server, then set the same role passwords and game settings. Copying only the file called 3ad85aea can load an older save, so take every one.

What you can and cannot move

Thing Moves to the new server?
The world: terrain, bases, altars, chests, flame level, map progress Yes, the 3ad85aea files in savegame
Players' characters, skills and inventories Nothing to move. Characters are saved on each player's own PC
Roles and their passwords (Admin, Friend, Guest) Yes, as the userGroups block in enshrouded_server.json
Custom game settings (enemy damage, yields, day length) Yes, as the gameSettings block in the same file
Server name, slots and ports Set them on the new host. Ports always change with a new machine

What goes where

File or folder What it holds Old server New server
savegame/3ad85aea to 3ad85aea-9 Ten rolling copies of the world savegame/ next to enshrouded_server.exe, or the saveDirectory path in the json savegame/
savegame/3ad85aea-index Points to which numbered copy is the newest Same Same
savegame/3ad85aea_info and its numbered copies and index World details shown in menus Same Same
enshrouded_server.json Name, slots, saveDirectory, userGroups, gameSettingsPreset, gameSettings Server's install folder Don't overwrite blindly. Copy the parts you need (see Step 4)

A dedicated server always names its world 3ad85aea, so a server to server move needs no renaming. That is different from moving a co-op world off your own PC, where the world can have another ID.

Before you start

  • Stop the old server. The server writes a new rolling copy as it saves. Stop it so the newest copy is complete and the index points at it.
  • Write down the role passwords. Open enshrouded_server.json on the old host and note each group in userGroups with its password and permissions.
  • Match the version. Update the new server to the current Enshrouded release before loading the world. Enshrouded 1.0 releases on 15 October 2026, so update both sides together around that date.
  • Keep a copy on your PC. Hold on to the downloaded files until the new server has run for a while.

Step 1: Download from the old host

Any host gives you a way out: a backup download from the panel, the file manager's zip option on the savegame folder, or SFTP with FileZilla or WinSCP. The world files are small, so any of them works. Check saveDirectory in enshrouded_server.json first. If the old host changed it, the world is in that folder rather than savegame.

Step 2: Check you have every file

Open the download and count the files that start with 3ad85aea. A world that has been played for a while has around twenty: 3ad85aea and 3ad85aea-1 up to 3ad85aea-9, the matching _info files, and two index files.

This is the gotcha. The files have no extension, and the one called plain 3ad85aea is often not the newest save. The -index file tells the game which of the ten copies is current, and it may point to 3ad85aea-6. If you upload only 3ad85aea, or the copies without the index, the server can load a save from hours or days earlier and it looks like progress was lost.

Step 3: Upload to the new server

  1. Stop the new server.
  2. Delete or move away any 3ad85aea files it already made on its first start, so old and new copies cannot mix.
  3. Upload every 3ad85aea file from your download into savegame.
  4. Check nothing gained a .txt or .zip extension on the way. The names must be exactly as they were.

Step 4: Rebuild roles and settings

Enshrouded has no single join password. Each role in userGroups has its own password and permissions such as canKickBan, canAccessInventories, canEditBase and canExtendBase. Players type the password of the role they should get when they join.

Set the same passwords on the new server so nobody needs a new one. If the old server ran custom rules, set gameSettingsPreset to Custom and copy the old gameSettings block across. Keep the new host's own ports, IP and saveDirectory lines, because those belong to the new machine. Keen Games' server roles documentation explains each permission.

Step 5: Start and check

Start the server, join with your character and check the newest thing you built. If a base you made in the last session is missing, stop the server and check the index file came across. Then send players the new address.

Common problems

  • World is there but a day of progress is missing: the -index file was not copied, or only the plain 3ad85aea file was. Upload the full set from a stopped server.
  • Server made a brand new world: files went into the wrong folder, saveDirectory points somewhere else, or a file extension was added.
  • Players cannot build or open chests: they joined with the wrong role password, or the role lacks canEditBase or canAccessInventories.
  • Game rules reset: the preset is not Custom, so the gameSettings block is ignored.
  • World will not load after an update: the new server runs an older version than the one that last saved the world. Update the server.

Moving to GamezServers

On an Enshrouded server from GamezServers, click Backup, stop the server and upload the 3ad85aea files into savegame from the Files tab or over SFTP (login in Settings). The file manager can extract a zip or download one straight from a link. The Admin and Friend passwords are panel settings, so set them to the ones your players already use, and choose Custom under Game settings to keep your old rules from enshrouded_server.json. The world then stays online without anyone's PC. Moving a co-op world from your own PC is covered in how to transfer an Enshrouded save to a dedicated server.

FAQ

Where are Enshrouded dedicated server saves stored?

In the savegame folder next to enshrouded_server.exe, unless saveDirectory in enshrouded_server.json points somewhere else. The world files all start with 3ad85aea.

Will my friends keep their characters?

Yes. Characters are saved on each player's own PC, so they arrive with their level and inventory.

Which Enshrouded save file is the latest?

The 3ad85aea-index file decides. Copy all ten numbered copies and the index together and the game picks the right one.

Do I need to rename the world files?

No. Dedicated servers always use the name 3ad85aea, so a world from another server keeps its name.
