Make a Minecraft hardcore server: set hardcore=true before the world is created, what happens when players die, and how to revive them.

To make a Minecraft hardcore server, set hardcore=true in server.properties and then let the server generate a new world: change level-name to a new folder name, or stop the server and move the old world folder out. Hardcore is stored in the world's level.dat when the world is created, so flipping the setting on an existing world does not make it hardcore. Difficulty locks to Hard, and players who die become spectators.

What you can change on an existing world vs what needs a new one

Change Existing world?
Turn a normal world into hardcore with hardcore=true No. Needs a new world, or editing level.dat by hand
Turn hardcore off with hardcore=false No. Same reason, the flag lives in level.dat
Lower the difficulty on a hardcore world No. Hardcore is always Hard
Revive a dead player Yes, with /gamemode survival <name>
Add lives, death bans or a world reset plugin Yes, plugins work on any world
Keep inventory, PvP, whitelist Yes, these are normal game rules and settings

What happens when someone dies on a hardcore server?

Since Java Edition 1.9, a player who dies on a hardcore server gets two buttons: Spectate world or Title screen. Spectating puts them in spectator mode, so they can fly around and watch but not touch anything. Logging off and back in does not help, they come back as a spectator. Before 1.9, death banned the player from the server, which is why older guides talk about bans.

Everything else about hardcore applies to everyone on the server. You cannot have some players on hardcore and others on normal survival in the same world, and the hardcore hearts show for all of them. The full rules are on the Minecraft Wiki hardcore page.

Before you start

  • Back up. If you are replacing an existing world, download or back up the world folder first. On Paper before 26.1, also world_nether and world_the_end.
  • Pick the version. Hardcore works on Vanilla, Paper, Purpur, Fabric and the rest, because it is a vanilla feature. Choose the server type for the plugins or mods you want.
  • Agree the rules. Decide now whether dead players are revived, wait for a reset, or are out for good. Changing your mind mid season causes arguments.

Step 1: Stop the server

Stop it from the panel or with stop in the console, so nothing is half saved.

Step 2: Set hardcore in server.properties

Open server.properties and set:

hardcore=true
difficulty=hard
level-name=hardcore

hardcore=true is the key line. difficulty is ignored once the world is hardcore, but setting it to hard avoids confusion. Changing level-name to a name that does not exist yet is the cleanest way to get a fresh world: the server makes a new folder with that name and leaves your old world untouched in its own folder.

If you would rather keep the name world, move or delete the old world folder (and on Paper before 26.1, world_nether and world_the_end) after backing it up. Since 26.1 the Nether and End live inside the world folder on every server type.

Step 3: Start the server and check

Start the server. It generates the new world as hardcore. Join and look at your hearts: hardcore hearts have a different, spiky look. You can also run /difficulty as an operator. It should report Hard, and it stays Hard whatever you try to set.

Step 4: Decide what death means

Out of the box, death means spectator for good. Most hardcore SMPs want something in between. Options that work on Paper and Purpur:

You want How
Pure hardcore, one life Leave it. Dead players spectate
Revive by an admin An operator runs /gamemode survival <name> and teleports them
A temporary death ban A death ban plugin that bans for a set time, then lets them back as survival
Extra lives A lives plugin that counts deaths and only switches to spectator at zero
Reset the world when everyone is dead A world reset plugin, or stop the server and swap level-name again

Reviving works because the server only puts dead players into spectator. Switching them back to survival is allowed, even though the client still showed the hardcore death screen. Their items are gone, dropped where they died.

Can I turn an existing world into hardcore?

Not with server.properties. The world keeps whatever hardcore value it was created with, which is the gotcha behind most "I set hardcore=true and nothing happened" posts. There are two real options:

  1. Start a new world as above. This is the clean way and the only one we recommend.
  2. Edit level.dat. Stop the server, download world/level.dat, open it in an NBT editor such as NBTExplorer, set the hardcore tag to 1, set Difficulty to 3, save and upload it back. Keep a copy of the original first. This also works in reverse to turn hardcore off.

Editing level.dat is easy to get wrong, and a damaged file can stop the world loading, so back up the whole world before you try it.

Common problems

  • Set hardcore=true but the world is still normal: the world already existed. Hardcore only applies when a world is created. Use a new level-name.
  • Changed the setting while the server ran and it went back: the server reads server.properties at start. Stop it, edit, start.
  • Cannot change difficulty: that is hardcore working. Hardcore is always Hard.
  • A dead player rejoined and is still a spectator: that is also working as intended. An operator can set them back to survival.
  • New world but the Nether is the old one (Paper before 26.1): you replaced world but left the old world_nether and world_the_end folders. Move those too, or use a new level-name.

Running a hardcore server on GamezServers

On a Minecraft server from GamezServers you change server.properties in the file manager, press Backup to keep the old world, and restart to generate the hardcore one. Operators can revive players from the panel console, and the world keeps running when you log off, so a hardcore season can run for weeks. If the group outgrows the first plan, upgrade from the dashboard and the world comes with you. For running a normal survival server with friends first, see how to start a Minecraft SMP with friends.

FAQ

How do I turn on hardcore on a Minecraft server?

Set hardcore=true in server.properties and let the server create a new world, for example by changing level-name. It does not convert an existing world.

What happens when you die on a hardcore server?

You can spectate the world or leave to the title screen. You cannot respawn in survival unless an operator changes your game mode.

Can you revive someone on a hardcore server?

Yes. An operator runs /gamemode survival <name> and the player is back, without the items they died with.

Can I turn hardcore off on my server?

Not by changing server.properties, because the world remembers it was created as hardcore. Edit the hardcore tag in level.dat with an NBT editor, after a backup, or start a new world.
