Your Minecraft server IP depends on where the server runs. On your own PC, players on your network use your local IPv4 address (from ipconfig) and friends elsewhere use your public IP, with TCP port 25565 forwarded. A hosted server shows its address, such as 203.0.113.10:25565, in the control panel. Add :port after the IP whenever the port is not 25565.

What is a Minecraft server IP address made of?

Every address has two parts: the IP (which machine) and the port (which program on that machine).

203.0.113.10:25565
  • 203.0.113.10 is the IP address.
  • 25565 is the port. It is Java Edition's default, set by server-port in server.properties.

If the server uses 25565, Java players can leave the port off and type only the IP. If it uses anything else, they must include it, or Minecraft knocks on the wrong door and says it cannot connect. Bedrock Edition works differently: its default port is UDP 19132, and the IP and port go in two separate boxes.

Where the server runs Address friends use Port
Your PC, same house Local IPv4, like 192.168.1.50 25565 unless changed
Your PC, friends elsewhere Your public IP, like 198.51.100.23 25565, forwarded on the router
Hosted server The address in the panel The port shown with it
Open to LAN world Found automatically Shown in chat, or chosen by you
Your own domain play.example.com Hidden with an SRV record (Java only)

How do I find my Minecraft server IP on my own PC?

You need two addresses: the local one for people on your Wi-Fi and the public one for everyone else.

Local IP on Windows:

  1. Press Windows + R, type cmd and press Enter.
  2. Run ipconfig.
  3. Under your active adapter (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), copy the IPv4 Address, usually starting with 192.168. or 10..

Local IP on macOS: open System Settings > Network, click your connection and read the IP address. On Linux: run hostname -I or ip addr.

Public IP: search "what is my IP" in a browser on the server PC, or read the WAN address on your router's status page. That is what friends outside your home type into Minecraft.

For the public IP to work, forward TCP port 25565 on your router to the server PC's local IP. Without that, friends get "Connection timed out". If your provider uses CGNAT (common on mobile, satellite and many fibre connections), port forwarding cannot work at all. See how to port forward a game server and, if that fails, hosting without port forwarding.

Can I connect to my own server with localhost?

Yes, but only you. On the PC running the server, type localhost or 127.0.0.1 as the address. That always points at the machine you are sitting at, so it is useless to send to friends. They need your local IP (same network) or public IP (anywhere else).

Should I put anything in server-ip in server.properties?

Usually no. Leave it empty:

server-ip=
server-port=25565

An empty server-ip makes the server listen on every network adapter, which is what you want. Setting it to an address the machine does not own is a common reason a server fails to start or nobody can connect. Change server-port only if you run several servers on one machine, and then tell players the new port. The other keys are explained in Minecraft server.properties explained.

How do I find the IP of a hosted Minecraft server?

A hosting company gives the server its own address. You do not need ipconfig or a public IP lookup, and there is nothing to forward.

On GamezServers, open your server in the dashboard and the address sits at the top of the control panel, in the form 203.0.113.10:25565. Click it to copy and send it as is, port included. Hosted servers often get a port other than 25565, so always share the whole thing.

What is the IP for an Open to LAN world?

LAN worlds do not need an address for people on the same network. Friends open Multiplayer and the world shows up at the bottom of their server list by itself.

If it does not appear, add it by hand: use the host PC's local IPv4 plus the LAN port. On Java, the game prints the port in chat when the world opens, for example "Local game hosted on port 52314". Since 26.3 you can also choose the port in the World Options screen under Multiplayer (Minecraft.net). So the address would be 192.168.1.50:52314.

On Bedrock, LAN worlds appear in the Friends tab under LAN Games when Visible to LAN Players is on.

How do I find a Minecraft server IP someone else runs?

You cannot look it up from the game. Ask the owner, or check their Discord or website. Once you have joined, Java keeps the address in your server list: select the server, click Edit and read the Server Address field. Bedrock shows it when you edit the server under the Servers tab.

Can I use a domain name instead of an IP?

Yes. Point a domain at the server's IP with an A record, for example play.example.com. If the port is not 25565, Java can hide the port too with an SRV record:

_minecraft._tcp.play.example.com SRV 0 5 25570 play.example.com

Players then type play.example.com with no port. Bedrock does not read SRV records, so Bedrock players still type the port in the port box.

Is it safe to share my Minecraft server IP?

Sharing a hosted server's address is fine. That is what it is for. Sharing your home public IP is a different matter: everyone who joins can see it, and a home connection has no protection if someone floods it. Turn on the whitelist so only your friends can actually join, and read is hosting a game server at home safe before you post a home IP anywhere public.

Getting an address that just works

A Minecraft server on GamezServers gets its own address the moment it is ready, minutes after paying. Your home IP is never shared, there is no router to configure, and every plan includes DDoS protection. Plans start at 4.99 USD a month for 2 GB, new customers get 50% off the first month on monthly plans, and friends can split the bill. For Bedrock, see Minecraft Bedrock hosting.

FAQ

How do I find my Minecraft server IP address?

On your own PC, run ipconfig for the local IPv4 and search "what is my IP" for the public one. On a hosted server, copy the address from the control panel.

Do I need to add the port to a Minecraft server IP?

Only if it is not 25565 on Java. Type it after a colon, like 203.0.113.10:25570. On Bedrock, the port always goes in its own box.

Why can my friends not join with my IP?

They are probably using your local IP from outside your network, or port 25565 is not forwarded. Friends elsewhere need your public IP and a forwarded port.

What is the default Minecraft server port?

TCP 25565 for Java Edition and UDP 19132 for Bedrock Edition.

Can I use localhost to join my own server?

Yes, on the PC running the server. Friends cannot use it, since localhost always means their own computer.
