How to Add Mods to a Necesse Server
Add Steam Workshop mods to a Necesse dedicated server: where the .jar files are, the server mods folder, matching versions and load order for every player.

To add mods to a Necesse server, subscribe to them on the Steam Workshop, then copy each mod's .jar from steamapps/workshop/content/1169040/<WorkshopID>/ on your PC into a mods folder in the server's main folder, next to Server.jar. Restart the server. Every player must have the exact same mods, at the same versions and in the same load order, and the server must run the same Necesse version as their game.
What you are working with
| Thing | What it is |
|---|---|
Mod .jar |
The whole mod. Only the .jar is needed. |
| Workshop ID | The number in the mod's Workshop URL and the name of its download folder. |
Server mods/ folder |
Where the server loads mods from. Create it if it is missing. |
clientside mods |
Mods the author marks as client only. Players can use them without the server having them. |
cfg/server.cfg |
Server settings. Mods do not go here. |
Where the mod files are on your PC
Steam downloads Workshop mods into the folder of the game, app ID 1169040, not the dedicated server's app ID 1169370. People searching under the server's ID find nothing.
| System | Subscribed Workshop mods | Manually installed mods |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\1169040\ |
%APPDATA%\Necesse\mods\ |
| Linux | ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/workshop/content/1169040/ |
~/.config/Necesse/mods/ |
| macOS | Steam library steamapps/workshop/content/1169040/ |
~/Library/Application Support/Necesse/mods/ |
Inside 1169040 there is one folder per mod, named by Workshop ID, with the .jar inside. The Necesse wiki confirms only the .jar is needed.
To match a folder to a mod, open the mod's Workshop page: the number after ?id= in the address is the folder name.
What goes where
| File | On your PC | On the server |
|---|---|---|
Mod .jar |

| Server settings | Not needed | cfg/server.cfg |
| World save | %APPDATA%\Necesse\saves\ |
saves/, with Save Name matching |
Step 1: Before you start
- Match the game version. After a Necesse patch, update the server too. On GamezServers, Steam Auto Update is off by default, so turn it on or reinstall after a patch.
- Update your mods. Mods built for an older Necesse version often fail after a patch until their authors update them.
- Back up. Mods can add items and tiles to the world. Press Backup, or copy the
savesfolder. - Play once with the mods. Load a world with the mods on your own PC first, so you know the set works together.
Step 2: Copy the jars
- Subscribe to every mod on the Workshop and start Necesse once so Steam downloads them.
- Open
steamapps/workshop/content/1169040/. - Copy the
.jarfrom each mod folder. Do not copy the numbered folders themselves, just the jars.
Step 3: Upload to the server
- Stop the server.
- In the server's main folder, open
mods, or create it. - Upload all the
.jarfiles into it. - Start the server and read the console. It lists the mods it loads.
Step 4: Match the load order
This is the trap most guides skip. When a player joins, Necesse compares their mod list with the server's, and the order matters as well as the files. Necesse's developer explained on the Steam forums that some mods confuse the "Server mods vs your mods" screen so every mod looks mismatched, and the fix is to put your mods in the same order as the server. Mods that depend on another mod must load after it.
So after the server is up:
- Note the server's mod order, from the console as it starts or from the mismatch screen when you try to join.
- Each player opens Mods in the main menu and arranges the same order.
- Restart the game and join.
A Steam Workshop collection with all the server's mods is the easiest way to get everyone subscribed to the same list.

Do players need the mods?
Yes, every mod that is not marked client side. Players subscribe to the same Workshop items and restart Necesse so they load. Client side mods, like a minimap or UI tweak, can stay on one player only.
Updating or removing mods
- Update: stop the server, replace the old
.jarwith the new one, start it, and have every player update through the Workshop. - Remove: stop the server and delete the
.jar. Back up first, because items and blocks from a removed mod can disappear from the world.
Common problems
- Every mod shows as mismatched when joining: the load order differs, or one mod confuses the comparison screen. Arrange the same order as the server.
- Kicked with a version error: the server is on an older Necesse version than the players. Update the server.
- Mod in the folder but not loaded: it sits inside a subfolder in
mods, or it is not a.jar. Put the file straight inmods. - Server crashes on start after a patch: a mod has not been updated for the new Necesse version. Remove the newest mods until it starts, then wait for updates.
- Cannot find the Workshop folder: you are looking under
1169370. Mods are under1169040.
Mods on GamezServers
On a Necesse server from GamezServers, you upload jars into mods in the Files tab or over SFTP (the login is in Settings), and the file manager can extract a zip or download a file from a link straight onto the server. Press Backup before adding mods, and turn on Steam Auto Update if you want the server to follow game patches. Your settlement stays online without anyone's PC. Moving a world over too?
