Satisfactory supports 4 players by default, both in normal co-op and on a dedicated server. A dedicated server can be set to allow more with the MaxPlayers setting in Game.ini, and groups of 8 or 12 do play that way. Coffee Stain tunes the server for 4, though, so every extra player costs performance and memory. Plan the server around the number of people who will actually play at the same time.

Short answer

Setup Players
Single player 1
Co-op hosted from someone's game 4 by default
Dedicated server, default 4
Dedicated server with MaxPlayers raised More, with more RAM and a fast CPU

Why the default is 4

Every player online keeps their part of the map loaded and simulated in full detail. Four players building in one area share most of that work. Four players in four different biomes load four separate areas. The official Satisfactory wiki puts it plainly: the server is tuned to be most performant with the default cap of four, and raising it may hurt stability, performance and resource use.

That does not mean 5 players will break your world. It means each extra player is a real cost, and on a late game factory that cost lands on top of an already busy simulation.

How to raise the player limit on a dedicated server

The limit lives in Game.ini, in the server's config folder:

  • Linux: FactoryGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Game.ini
  • Windows: FactoryGame\Saved\Config\WindowsServer\Game.ini

Add or change:

[/Script/Engine.GameSession]
MaxPlayers=8

Stop the server before editing. Satisfactory writes its ini files on shutdown, so changes made while it runs can be overwritten. Start it again and the new limit applies.

There is no Server Manager option for this. It is a config file change only.

How player count changes what you need

More players mostly means more RAM, plus a CPU fast enough to keep the simulation smooth with more of the map loaded.

Players online Early to mid game Late game factory
1 to 4 8 GB 12 GB
5 to 8 12 GB 12 to 16 GB
9 to 12 16 GB 16 GB, and keep the group building near each other

The official wiki lists 8 GB as the minimum for a server and 16 GB for four or more players, which fits these numbers for a factory that keeps growing. If the server starts to stutter, Satisfactory server lag fix covers what to check.

Tips for bigger groups

  • Build together. A group working in one region costs far less than the same group spread over the map.
  • Count concurrent players, not the whole group. A Discord of 15 where 6 play at once needs a 6 to 8 player server.
  • Agree on the factory plan. Large groups produce large factories fast. Trains over long belts and trucks keep the simulation lighter.
  • Use a join password. With more people comes more risk of someone dismantling something important. Keep the admin password to one or two people.

Do Steam and Epic players count the same?

Yes. Steam and Epic Games Store players play together on the same server and each takes one slot, as long as everyone runs the same game version and branch.

Co-op without a dedicated server

When someone hosts from their game, the world only runs while they play. When the host quits, everyone is disconnected and production stops. A dedicated server keeps the world available to every player on their own schedule, and with Auto Pause off it keeps producing with nobody online. That is the main reason groups of 4 or more move to a server, more than the player limit itself.

Satisfactory player limits on GamezServers

On our servers the player limit is set for you to match the plan, with no ini editing:

Plan RAM Players Price
Starter 8 GB 4 19.99 USD a month
Standard 12 GB 8 29.99 USD a month
Pro 16 GB 12 39.99 USD a month

Upgrade any time from the dashboard, prorated, and the higher limit applies on the next restart with the same save. If your group of 8 splits the 12 GB plan at checkout, each share is about 4.75 USD a month including the 1 USD share fee. New customers get 50% off the first month. FAQ

Can 5 or 6 people play Satisfactory together?

Yes, on a dedicated server with MaxPlayers raised in Game.ini. Normal co-op hosted from the game sticks to 4.

Is there a hard maximum for MaxPlayers?

Coffee Stain does not publish one, and the server will accept higher values. In practice RAM and CPU limit you long before the number does. Most groups stay at 12 or below.

Do more players make the factory lag?

They can, especially when players spread out, because each one keeps their area loaded. A fast CPU and enough RAM keep it smooth.

Does everyone need to own Satisfactory?

Yes. Each player needs their own copy on Steam or the Epic Games Store. The dedicated server itself is free.

Can I move our co-op save to a server with more slots?

Yes. Upload the save in Server Manager under Manage Saves and load it. Step by step in how to upload a Satisfactory save to a dedicated server.

Skip the setup. Your own Satisfactory server.
