Factorio 2.1 is the last major update for Factorio and Space Age, released on the experimental branch on 23 June 2026 and up to version 2.1.20 as of 22 September 2026 (Wube release forum). The stable branch is still 2.0.77. Wube planned to keep 2.1 experimental over the summer so mods can catch up, and no stable date has been set.
What is Factorio 2.1?
Factorio 2.1 is a free update for the base game and Space Age focused on quality of life, small features, fixes, polish and modding improvements. Wube announced the plan in Friday Facts #440 on 29 May 2026, stating "We envision 2.1 as our last major update of Factorio, and we will shift the focus onto long term support." The same post lists what is not in it: no new planets, no new enemies and no new research trees or resource chains.
What changes in Factorio 2.1?
The first public build, 2.1.7, came with a long changelog. The changes most groups will notice:
| Area | Changes |
|---|---|
| Circuit network | Pipes, storage tanks, boilers, heat exchangers, labs, heat pipes and land mines connect to circuits. Choose red, green or both wires for input and output separately. Selector combinator gets a Time mode. Radars get a "universe" mode for signals across surfaces. |
| Space logistics | Platform hubs can set requests from circuits, orbital requests can import from any planet or another platform, and small requests are batched into one rocket. Landing pad unloading bay added. |
| Building | Pumpjacks, burner drills and inserters can be flipped, so blueprint flipping is reliable. Pumps connect to fluid wagons at both ends. Fluid mixing warnings. |
| Quality | Storage tank volume, cargo wagon size and locomotive power and speed now increase with quality. |
| Multiplayer | Latency hiding for remotely driven cars, and more stable remote view dragging in multiplayer. |
| Spidertrons | Patrol support. |
| Enemies | Larger, less frequent expansions that scale with evolution, a fixed base building cooldown (30 seconds by default) and radar alerts when an expansion base is built. |
| Graphics | New assembling machine, oil refinery and heat exchanger graphics, and many other art updates. |

When is the Factorio 2.1 stable release date?
There is no fixed date. In FFF #440, Wube said it hoped to release 2.1 as experimental "by the end of June" and planned to "keep 2.1 as experimental over the whole summer" so mod authors have time to update. In FFF #444 on 26 June 2026 the team added that "we still have plenty of time before we plan to mark it stable". As of 3 October 2026, Factorio's own version API still lists 2.0.77 as stable and 2.1.20 as experimental. Expect the stable release once Wube is happy with the experimental builds, and plan for it rather than counting on a date.
Will my 2.0 save work on 2.1?
Yes, with a warning. FFF #444 says "2.0 save games will load, but there may be changes that break your factory designs" and "Once updated, blueprints and save games cannot be downgraded to 2.0." In other words, a save opened on a 2.1 server is a one way trip. Some players also reported recipe balance changes after loading 2.0 saves, so test before you move a big shared map.
Do mods work on Factorio 2.1?
Many already do. Popular mods such as Krastorio 2, Space Exploration, Factory Planner, Rate Calculator and Even Distribution all have 2.1 releases on the mod portal, while keeping their older 2.0 releases for stable servers. Smaller or abandoned mods may never update. Check every mod in your list on mods.factorio.com before you switch, and see best Factorio mods for multiplayer for picks that already support both versions.
Is there an ARM version of the Factorio server now?
Yes, on 2.1. FFF #446 on 18 September 2026 announced Factorio for ARM64 Linux, "including the headless version", with Steam users getting it through the 2.1 experimental branch. On factorio.com the ARM64 headless download is currently offered for 2.1.20 only. This means a Raspberry Pi 5 or an ARM cloud server can now run a Factorio headless server, as long as you are on 2.1. What this means for your server
- Your server and players must match. Factorio refuses connections when versions differ. If one friend opts into 2.1 on Steam, they cannot join a 2.0.77 server until they switch back. The Factorio version mismatch fix explains both directions.
- Pick a branch as a group. Stay on 2.0.77 for stability and full mod support, or move everyone to 2.1 experimental for the new features.
- Back up before trying 2.1. You cannot take a 2.1 save back to 2.0.
- Check your mods. Mods with only 2.0 releases will not load on 2.1. Upload the 2.1 release of each mod to the server, and players are offered the same versions when they join.
- Players on Steam opt in under Properties, Game Versions and Betas, Experimental. Standalone players enable it under Settings, Other, Enable experimental updates.
Running Factorio 2.1 on GamezServers

The update backs up your map first and keeps your saves, mods and settings. Plans start at 4.99 USD a month for 2 GB, with 50% off the first month for new customers. See Factorio server hosting.
