No. A dedicated game server does not need a graphics card, and adding one does not make it faster. The server never draws anything on screen: it runs game logic, physics and networking on the CPU, keeps the world in RAM, and saves it to disk. That is why game hosts do not list GPUs on their plans, and why an old PC with weak graphics can still host a small server well, as long as its CPU and memory are up to it.
What a game server actually does
Your game client and the server split the work:
| Work | Client (your PC) | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Drawing the world, lighting, shadows | Yes, on the GPU | No |
| Player input | Reads it | Receives it over the network |
| Physics and movement | Predicts locally | Decides what really happened |
| Creature and NPC behavior | Displays it | Runs it |
| World state, building, inventories | Displays it | Stores and updates it |
| Saving the world | No | Yes, to disk |
The server is the referee and the record keeper. It never renders a frame. Developers build dedicated servers to run "headless", with no window and no graphics at all.
What matters instead
- CPU single core speed. Most game servers run their main loop on one core. The faster that core, the more the server can simulate per tick. See the best CPU for a game server.
- RAM. The world, players and mods have to fit in memory. See how much RAM a game server needs.
- Network. Upload speed and stable latency, which is where home hosting usually struggles.
- Storage. An SSD for fast loading and saves. See NVMe vs SSD for game servers.
Why a GPU does not help
GPUs are fast at doing the same simple math on huge amounts of data at once, which is perfect for drawing pixels. Game server work is the opposite: lots of branching logic, one step depending on the last, on one thread. A GPU cannot run that faster than a CPU.
Some game engines can use the GPU for physics in the client, but dedicated servers do not. Server builds of Unreal, Unity and Source games disable rendering entirely.
The hosted co-op exception
There is a difference between a dedicated server and hosting from inside the game. When you click "Host game" in Valheim, Palworld or Enshrouded, your PC runs the game and the server together. Your GPU is busy drawing your game while your CPU also runs the server for everyone. That is why hosting while playing can make your own frame rate drop.
A dedicated server, at home or rented, separates the two. Dedicated server vs peer to peer explains the difference.
Servers that want a display anyway
A few dedicated servers, mostly Unity games and some Windows only servers, insist on a display device even though they draw nothing. On Linux, the usual fix is a virtual display:
xvfb-run ./YourServer.x86_64 -batchmode -nographics
-batchmode -nographics are Unity's standard flags to run without graphics. A virtual display costs almost nothing and needs no GPU. Hosts set this up where a game requires it.
Can I host a server on a PC with no graphics card?
Yes, with two notes:
- The PC needs some way to output video for setup, which can be integrated graphics in the CPU. After setup, you can run it with no monitor and manage it remotely.
- Most modern desktop CPUs include integrated graphics, which is more than enough.
An old office PC or a mini PC with a strong CPU and enough RAM can make a good small home server. A laptop can work too, with some caveats about heat and sleep settings.
Playing and hosting on the same PC
If you host a dedicated server on the same PC you play on, the GPU only matters for your own game. The server still uses CPU and RAM, and that is what competes with your game. If your PC struggles to play and host at once, more CPU or RAM helps, a better GPU does not.
On GamezServers
Our plans list RAM, vCPU and a suggested player count, because those are what a game server uses. There is no GPU to pay for. Plans are priced by RAM at about 2.50 USD per GB a month, and you can upgrade any time from the panel if your world grows. Playing on the same PC that hosted the server? Moving the server to us frees your PC to just play. Pick a game or read how to keep a game server online 24/7 without your PC.

FAQ
Does a Minecraft server need a graphics card?
No. A Minecraft server runs on the CPU and RAM. Only players' games use a GPU to draw the world.
Will a better GPU reduce server lag?
No. Server lag comes from CPU, RAM, disk or network limits. A GPU does not take part in running the server.
Why does my FPS drop when I host a game?
When you host from inside the game, your PC runs the server and your game at once. The server takes CPU time and memory away from your game. A dedicated server on another machine fixes it.
Do game server hosts use GPUs?
Not for game servers. Their machines are built around CPU, RAM, storage and network.
