To become admin on a Dead Matter server, stop the server, add +Admins= and +SuperAdmins= lines with your 17 digit SteamID64 to Game.ini under the SurvivalBaseGamestate section, and start it again. In game, press Y to open chat and type commands with a leading slash, such as /god, /noclip or /teleport "PlayerName". A whitelist uses the same file: set WhitelistActive=true and add one +Whitelist= line per SteamID64.

A Dead Matter survivor in the wilderness

Step 1: Get the right Steam ID

Dead Matter only accepts the SteamID64: a 17 digit number starting with 7656119. Not your display name, not your custom profile URL, not the older STEAM_0:1:... format.

  1. Open your Steam profile and copy the link.
  2. Paste it into steamid.io and copy the steamID64 value.

If your profile link already looks like steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198..., the number at the end is your SteamID64.

Step 2: Add yourself to Game.ini

Stop the server first. Then open:

DeadMatter/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/Game.ini

Find or create the main section and add your ID:

[/Script/DeadMatter.SurvivalBaseGamestate]
+Admins=76561198000000001
+SuperAdmins=76561198000000001

For more than one admin, add more lines. Each needs its own +:

+Admins=76561198000000001
+Admins=76561198000000002
+SuperAdmins=76561198000000001

Save the file and start the server. The full list of other settings in this file is in our Game.ini settings guide.

Admins or SuperAdmins

Level Meant for Can do
Admins Moderators In game admin commands
SuperAdmins Owner and senior staff Admin commands plus operational control such as restarts

Put yourself in both. Give moderators Admins only, so a trusted player can deal with a cheater without being able to take the server down.

Step 3: Use commands in game

Press Y to open chat. Every command starts with /. Without the slash it goes out as a chat message for everyone to see, which is an easy way to announce to the server that you just tried to spawn a rifle.

These commands are documented by the community and hosting providers. Dead Matter has changed across alpha and early access builds, so if one does nothing on your build, it may have been renamed or removed.

Player and movement

Command What it does
/god Toggles invulnerability
/noclip Fly through terrain and walls
/teleport "Name or SteamID" Teleport to a player
/unstuck Frees a stuck character
/suicide Kills your character
/SetGravity 0.5 Changes gravity scale

Spawning

Command What it does
/listitems Lists item IDs for spawning
/SpawnItem ItemID Quantity Spawns an item at your position
/GiveAmmo Gives ammo for your weapon
/SpawnVehicle Spawns a vehicle
/SpawnZombie Spawns an infected
/SpawnAnimal Spawns an animal
/RemoveZombies Removes infected

World

Command What it does
/weather night Jumps the time to night
/SetWeather Rain Sets a weather preset, such as Rain, Sun or Cloudy

Practical admin habits

  • Test commands with noclip on and nobody around. Spawning a vehicle inside a building is a fast way to make a mess.
  • Use god mode only for admin work. Players notice when an admin never takes damage, and trust goes fast on a small server.
  • Keep a written log of what you spawned for whom, especially on a PvP server where a lost loadout leads to arguments.
  • Back up before you test. Spawned items and vehicles go into the save like anything else.

Setting up a whitelist

A whitelist is the cleanest way to run a private squad server. Only listed players can join, so there is no password to leak.

[/Script/DeadMatter.SurvivalBaseGamemode]
WhitelistActive=true
+Whitelist=76561198000000001
+Whitelist=76561198000000002
+Whitelist=76561198000000003

Note the section: the whitelist lives in SurvivalBaseGamemode, not the SurvivalBaseGamestate section where admins go. Add yourself to the whitelist as well as the admin lists, or you will lock yourself out.

To add someone later: stop the server, add a line, start it. To remove someone, delete their line.

When admin does not work

Symptom Cause Fix
Commands appear as chat Missing / Start every command with a slash
Nothing happens at all ID not loaded Check it is the 17 digit SteamID64
Worked once, gone after restart Edited while running Stop the server, edit, start
Some commands work, others do not Admin only, not SuperAdmin Add the ID to +SuperAdmins too
Whitelisted friend cannot join Wrong section or ID Put +Whitelist under SurvivalBaseGamemode
Owner locked out Not on own whitelist Add your ID to the whitelist

A file saved as Game.ini.txt, or placed in a Windows folder instead of WindowsServer, is ignored completely. If no setting in the file works, start there.

Doing this on a hosted server

On a GamezServers Dead Matter server, stop the server from the panel, open Game.ini in the file manager, add your IDs and start it again. The live console shows the server loading so you know it came up cleanly. A one click backup before a whitelist change costs nothing and makes a typo harmless. If you are new to the panel, the control panel docs show where stop, files and backups live.

FAQ

How do I open the admin console in Dead Matter?

There is no separate admin console. Press Y to open chat and type commands with a / in front.

Can I make someone admin without restarting?

No. Admins are read from Game.ini when the server starts, so stop it, add the ID and start it again.

How do I find item IDs for /SpawnItem?

Run /listitems in chat as an admin to see the IDs, then use /SpawnItem ItemID Quantity.

How do I kick or ban a player?

The most reliable way on a private server is the whitelist: remove their SteamID64 from +Whitelist and restart. That keeps them out for good.

Does the whitelist replace the password?

It can. With the whitelist on, only listed IDs get in, so many private groups leave the password empty.
