The best Minecraft server performance mods in 2026 are Lithium, FerriteCore, C2ME and ScalableLux, with Krypton, ServerCore and spark close behind. Together they cut tick time, memory use and chunk generation lag on a Fabric server while keeping vanilla behaviour. Every mod below has a release for Minecraft 26.3 on Modrinth as of October 3, 2026.
Quick list: the best server performance mods
| Mod | What it speeds up | Loaders | On 26.3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lithium | Game logic: mobs, physics, block ticks | Fabric, NeoForge | Yes |
| FerriteCore | Memory use | Fabric, Forge, NeoForge | Yes |
| C2ME | Chunk generation, loading and saving | Fabric | Yes |
| ScalableLux | Lighting engine | Fabric, NeoForge | Yes |
| Krypton | Networking | Fabric | Yes |
| ServerCore | Many server side tweaks, dynamic settings | Fabric, Forge, NeoForge | Yes |
| Very Many Players | Busy servers with lots of players | Fabric | Yes |
| Alternate Current | Redstone dust | Fabric, Forge, NeoForge | Yes |
| spark | Finding the cause of lag | Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Paper | Yes |
| Chunky | Pregenerating the world | Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Paper | Yes |
Versions and loaders are from each project's Modrinth page. Check again before you install, since mod support changes with every Minecraft drop.
Which server type should use these mods?
These are for Fabric (and some for NeoForge). If you run Paper or Purpur, skip them: Paper already includes its own versions of many of these optimizations, and Fabric mods do not load on Paper. Chunky and spark are the exceptions, both have Paper plugin builds. If you are choosing between server types, our Paper vs Spigot vs Purpur vs Fabric vs Forge guide covers the trade offs.
A vanilla style Fabric server with the first four mods below is the closest you get to Paper's speed while keeping exact vanilla mechanics, which technical players and redstone builders care about.
1. Lithium
Lithium is the core performance mod. It rewrites slow parts of the game logic, such as mob pathfinding, collision checks, block entity ticking and chunk access, without changing how the game behaves. It is the single biggest gain for tick time (MSPT) on most Fabric servers. Install it first, and on NeoForge use the NeoForge build.
2. FerriteCore
FerriteCore lowers memory use by storing block states and models more efficiently. On a server it means less RAM used by the same world and fewer garbage collection pauses. It is especially worth it on modpacks, where it can free a noticeable share of the heap.
3. C2ME (Concurrent Chunk Management Engine)
C2ME spreads chunk generation, loading and saving across CPU cores. Exploration is where most servers lag, because new chunks are expensive, and C2ME makes elytra flights and new player spawns much smoother. It is Fabric only and changes deep parts of the game, so update it alongside Minecraft and read its notes after big drops.
4. ScalableLux
ScalableLux replaces the lighting engine with a faster, multi threaded one. Light updates are a hidden cost in chunk generation and in big builds, so it pairs well with C2ME.
5. Krypton
Krypton optimizes the networking stack: how packets are compressed, flushed and sent. On a server with 10 or more players it reduces CPU spent on networking. It is Fabric only.
6. ServerCore
ServerCore bundles many server side optimizations and adds settings you cannot reach in vanilla, such as dynamic view and simulation distance that drops automatically when the server is struggling. That makes it a safety net for public servers. Read its config after installing, some options change gameplay slightly.
7. Very Many Players (VMP)
Very Many Players targets servers with large player counts, optimizing how the server tracks players and the entities and chunks near them. A 5 friend SMP will not notice it. A 50 player server will.
8. Alternate Current
Alternate Current replaces redstone dust logic with a much faster implementation. If your players build big redstone machines it helps a lot, but redstone timing can differ from vanilla in rare cases, so technical servers should test their contraptions first.
9. spark
spark does not speed anything up, it tells you what is slow. Run /spark profiler start, wait a few minutes while the lag happens, then /spark profiler stop for a link to a report that shows exactly which mod, entity or chunk is eating the tick. Use it before adding more mods, since the cause is often a single farm.
10. Chunky
Chunky pregenerates your world in advance, so the server is not generating terrain while players explore. Set a radius, for example /chunky radius 5000 then /chunky start, and let it run overnight. Pair it with a world border so players never leave the pregenerated area.
Two small extras worth adding
- Let Me Despawn makes mobs that picked up items despawn normally, so zombies holding rotten flesh do not pile up for weeks. It also has Paper builds.
- Clumps merges XP orbs into one, which helps around mob farms.
ModernFix is also popular and great for modpack startup time, but as of October 3, 2026 its newest listed versions stop at 26.1.2. Use it on modpacks that run older Minecraft versions.
What not to install on a server
Many popular "performance" mods are client only and do nothing, or crash, on a server: Sodium, Entity Culling, Iris and similar rendering mods belong in players' own mod folders. A mod marked "client" on Modrinth will usually stop a dedicated server with an invalid dist DEDICATED_SERVER style error. See Minecraft server crashing on startup if that happens.
How to install them
- Set the server type to Fabric on the right Minecraft version.
- Install Fabric API. Some of these mods need it, and it does no harm to the ones that do not.
- Download the server build of each mod for your exact Minecraft version from Modrinth.
- Upload the
.jarfiles to themodsfolder and restart.
Full steps are in how to install mods on a Minecraft server. On GamezServers, switching to Fabric is one click in the panel and the mods folder is in the Files tab. If the server still lags with all of these, it may simply need more RAM or CPU, which is a plan change on Minecraft server hosting.
FAQ
What is the best performance mod for a Minecraft server?
Lithium. It improves tick time on almost every Fabric server without changing gameplay. Add FerriteCore, C2ME and ScalableLux next.
Do performance mods work on Paper?
No. Fabric mods do not load on Paper, and Paper already has its own optimizations. Chunky and spark have Paper plugin versions.
Is Sodium a server mod?
No. Sodium is a client rendering mod. It only helps each player's own frame rate and should not go in the server's mods folder.
Do players need these mods installed too?
No. Lithium, C2ME, FerriteCore, ScalableLux, Krypton and the others in this list work on the server alone, so vanilla Fabric or even vanilla clients can join.
Will performance mods change my redstone or farms?
Lithium aims for exact vanilla behaviour. Alternate Current and some ServerCore options can change edge cases, so test important contraptions after adding them.
