An ARK: Survival Ascended dedicated server needs at least 12 GB of RAM for a small tribe, 16 GB for most groups, bigger maps or a few mods, and 24 GB for heavy mod lists or busy public servers. The Island alone uses around 8 to 10 GB with nobody online. Plan on 30 GB or more of SSD space, a CPU with strong single core speed, and Windows (or Proton on Linux).
What are the minimum requirements for an ARK Survival Ascended server?
Studio Wildcard does not publish an official spec sheet for the dedicated server, so these numbers come from running it:
| Resource | Minimum | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | 12 GB free for the server | 16 GB, 24 GB with mods |
| CPU | 4 modern cores with high clock speed | Fast single core performance above all |
| Disk | 30 GB or more on an SSD | NVMe, with room for saves and backups |
| OS | Windows | Windows, or Linux through Proton |
| Network | A stable connection with good upload | A data center connection |
The server program, ArkAscendedServer.exe, is Steam app 2430930 and only ships for Windows. Its launch options, including map names and the -mods and -ServerPlatform flags, are documented on the ARK wiki's server configuration page. Linux hosts run it through Proton, a compatibility layer, which works but adds a layer to troubleshoot. Our guide to making an ARK Survival Ascended server covers the install.
How much RAM does an ARK Survival Ascended server need?
ASA is one of the heaviest survival servers there is. The world, every wild dino and every structure lives in memory, and it grows as your tribe builds and breeds.
| Server | RAM |
|---|---|
| Small tribe on The Island or Scorched Earth, up to 10 players | 12 GB |
| Bigger maps, boosted rates or a few mods, up to 30 players | 16 GB |
| Heavy mod lists, large bases or a busy public server | 24 GB |
12 GB is the floor, not the comfortable middle. With the map already taking 8 to 10 GB idle, a 12 GB server has a few GB left for players, tames and bases. Most tribes are happier on 16 GB, especially a few weeks in.
Which ARK maps need the most RAM?
The Island is the reference point, at around 8 to 10 GB with nobody online. Larger maps and story maps with more creatures and content start higher, so we size them from the 16 GB plan up. Ascended map names all end in _WP:
| Map | Server name | Starting plan |
|---|---|---|
| The Island | TheIsland_WP |
12 GB for a small tribe |
| Scorched Earth | ScorchedEarth_WP |
12 GB for a small tribe |
| The Center | TheCenter_WP |
16 GB |
| Aberration | Aberration_WP |
16 GB |
| Extinction | Extinction_WP |
16 GB |
| Ragnarok, Valguero | Ragnarok_WP, Valguero_WP |
16 GB |
| Astraeos, Lost Colony, Genesis | Astraeos_WP, LostColony_WP, Genesis_WP |
16 GB |
As a rule, if you are on anything bigger than The Island or Scorched Earth, start at 16 GB. Mod maps vary widely, so check the mod page and leave headroom. Our list of the best ARK Survival Ascended maps for a server compares them for groups.

Why does my ARK server use more RAM over time?
Three things grow through a world's life:
- Tamed dinos. Every tame is a full creature with stats, inventory and AI. A breeding program can add hundreds.
- Structures. Every foundation, wall and storage box is saved and loaded. Big bases add up across a tribe.
- Wild dinos. They respawn constantly. If performance drops over weeks, an admin can clear and respawn them with
DestroyWildDinos, which often frees memory and fixes stuck spawns.
Breeding and maturation settings in Game.ini affect this directly: faster breeding means more dinos in the world. If you boost those rates, size the server up too. The settings worth tuning are in best ARK Survival Ascended server settings.
How much do mods add to an ARK server?
Every CurseForge mod adds memory and startup time. A handful of small quality of life mods barely register, while big content mods, new creature packs and mod maps can add several GB. Add mods a few at a time, restart, and watch memory before adding the next batch.
A mod that is broken on the current patch can also stop the server from loading at all, which looks like a resource problem but is not. If the server hangs after you add a mod, remove it before buying more RAM. See how to install mods on an ARK Survival Ascended server and the ARK server crashing fix.
What CPU does an ARK server need?
The game thread does most of the work, so single core speed matters more than core count. A modern desktop class CPU with high boost clocks runs ASA better than an older server chip with many slow cores. Four fast cores give the game thread room plus headroom for saving, networking and the OS.
Signs the CPU is the bottleneck rather than RAM: dinos and players rubber band during big fights or when many tames are loaded in one area, while memory still has room.
How much disk space does an ARK server need?
The game files are around 30 GB or more, and each patch can add to that. Saves grow with your world, and you want room for backups on top. Use an SSD: ASA loads the whole map at start and writes the world on every save, and a hard drive makes startup crawl and saves hitch.
Can I run an ARK server on the same PC I play on?
Only with a lot of memory. The ASA client wants plenty of RAM and VRAM itself, and the server wants 12 GB or more on top. A 32 GB PC can just about do both for a small tribe, and anything less will struggle. The server also has to stay on for dinos to mature and crops to grow, which means leaving your gaming PC running around the clock.

At least 12 GB for a small tribe on The Island or Scorched Earth, 16 GB for most groups, and 24 GB for heavy mods or a busy public server.

The whole map, every wild and tamed dino and every structure stay in memory. The Island alone uses around 8 to 10 GB with nobody online.
Can an ARK Survival Ascended server run on Linux?
Not natively. The server only ships for Windows, so Linux hosts run it through Proton.
How much disk space does an ARK server need?
Around 30 GB or more for the game files, plus room for saves and backups, on an SSD.
