What comes set up on a Tachyons server

One ship, many crew

Several players run the same ship: one on weapons, one on power, one fixing hull breaches mid fight.

A galaxy that persists

Ships, cargo and the universe stay on the server between sessions, not on someone's home PC.

Tune the universe

config.cfg sets the galaxy size, hyperspace travel time, oxygen and fire rules and more.

Pick the release

The Version setting picks which Tachyons CE release the server runs, so it can match your crew's client.

How to join your Tachyons server

  1. 1

Download TachyonsCE.zip for the release your server runs (the newest is v1.0.2) from the Tachyons CE releases page.

  2. 2

Unzip it and open the client folder. On Windows run TachyonsCE_Client.exe, which brings its own Java. On Linux or Mac run StartClientConsole.sh with Java installed.

  3. 3

Enter 203.0.113.24 as the server address and {port} as the port.

  4. 4

Pick a name and connect. New players spawn at the starting station and can be brought aboard your ship.

Common problems

Client and server must be the same release. The server runs Tachyons CE, so players need the CE client from the same release, not the newer build on itch.io.

The client asks for an address and a port. Use the ones shown in your panel, not the default 30303 from old guides.

Edited config.cfg and nothing changed? Settings load at start, so restart the server after saving.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Modding your Tachyons server

Tachyons keeps its ships, systems, races and events in plain data files, and Tachyons CE is itself a community modded edition of the game. Edit ship models, event scripts and the config files through the file manager.

Tachyons server hosting, explained

Tachyons is a standalone multiplayer space game by the solo developer Spektor, with its own engine. You and your friends crew a starship together through a generated galaxy: route power between systems, man the weapons, put out fires, and fight pirates and aliens. Unlike most ship games you can leave your ship, board other vessels, steal their systems and even build new ships at shipyards from what you collect.

This server runs Tachyons CE, the community edition kept on GitHub. It started from an older Tachyons build and adds fixes, cleaned up dialogue, extra ship art and balance changes made by players. It is the version groups use to run their own persistent galaxy, either a private crew server or a bigger public universe with several ships flying at once.

In the panel you choose the CE release with the Version setting. The rest lives in config.cfg in the file manager: universe width and height, starting sector, time spent in hyperspace, jump energy, oxygen and fire behavior and plenty more. Race files and event scripts sit next to it if you want to go further, and the live console shows who is online.

Tachyons is a 2D Java game and its server is small. A crew of friends runs on 1 GB, and 2 GB covers several crews in a default size galaxy. Only a big universe with many ships active at once needs 4 GB. Take a backup in the panel before changing release or big config values so you can roll back.

Common questions

Is Tachyons a mod for FTL?

No. Tachyons is its own game on its own engine. It is often compared to FTL because you crew a ship, but you do not need FTL to play.

Which version does the server run?

Tachyons CE, the community edition from GitHub. Players need the CE client from the same release, which is a free download.

Can players on the itch.io version join?

No. The itch.io build has moved ahead of the community edition, and the two do not connect. Everyone needs the CE client.

How many players can join?

There is no small fixed cap. Several crews can fly their own ships in the same universe, and the limit is mostly how busy you want it to feel.

Can I change the galaxy rules?

Yes. Edit config.cfg in the file manager to change universe size, hyperspace time, oxygen, fire and many other values, then restart.

Is progress saved when the server restarts?

Yes. The universe and ships are stored in the server's data files. Take a backup before big changes so you can roll back.

Do players need Java?

Windows players do not, the CE launcher brings its own. Linux and Mac players need Java installed to run the client.

How much RAM does a Tachyons server need?

Very little. 1 GB is enough for one crew, and 2 GB handles several crews in a normal size galaxy.

Is GamezServers affiliated with Tachyons?

No. You rent and control your own dedicated Tachyons server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
